  1. There were lots of misspellings and a couple of outright errors. We are not impressed with PFO's editing skills.
  2. Fiance? Are you sure that you didn't go to Provincetown to propose? Not that there's anything wrong with that. From dictionary: Related Words for : fiance groom-to-be Related Words for : fiancee bride-to-be
  3. Von Schweikert backed out of CanJam a couple of days before it started. They directed Greg (Augsburger) to somebody in San Diego that then provided the speakers. They were PBN Montana. I agree that the talks were nice and that the speakers sounded excellent, especially for such a difficult room.
  4. Steve, you're missing really great times. When the date for next year's meet comes out, immediately mark it out on your calendar and let nothing interfere with it. We all want to meet you. Well, except maybe for the ones that already have. Jude studiously ignored Jacob. Jacob is a lot less perverse that I am. Once I figure out that I make someone uncomfortable, I do my best to hang around them as much as possible. I guess that's why I like cats. Me too.
  5. In that case, maybe you should talk to Steve about making something custom for you in wood.
  6. Sankar is the engineer here. For me, they sound very good and, if they sell for ~$350, are the best value among the new headphones. It's shipping with bowls. TTVJ has a show special of $5 off for flats. I bought some flats to go with my HF2s. I agree that they sound awfully good, but not too much like vintage RS1s. They have no exaggerated sibilance whereas for me, RS1s sound like somebody is sticking needles into my eardrums.

I think that this describes it pretty well.

Definitely, I got free HeadRoom bourbon last night.

When I was listening to the balanced, they hadn't unpacked the production models yet. I've since gotten a listen to the production version in my set up, which is single-ended. As I've reported, I'm keeping my order in.

Yep, I'm pretty damn lucky. BTW, my pre-order stays in.
  11. Not to my ears/brain. See my comments in the CanJam thread.
  12. Sennheiser HD800. I have a preorder in with HeadRoom, but wasn't going to buy a pair for sure until I heard them. Well, now I've heard them.

Not unless you want your fingernails painted red. Back on subject, I wandered down into the HeadRoom/Senn room. Tyll was setting up and just unpacking a pair of the pre-production HD800s that they had balanced. So I got to be the first ever (according to Tyll) to hear balanced HD800s. I listened to one of the HR demo CDs from a Wadia > HR Ultra DAC > HR Ultra Desktop with HR Ultra Power Supply. The balanced HD-800 is sublime. It's not a wow kind of headphone, everything just sounds right. It has just the right amount of bass, soundstage was large but not overly so, midrange was neutral but not analytical and the highs sounded right. It's the fastest dynamic headphone that I've ever listened to. Later I get to listen to a production, single-ended version of the HD800. I asked the Senn rep what the difference between pre- and production models were. He says that there are no acoustical differences and that the main difference is the paint. He says that further testing showed the original paint to not be robust enough. If the production version sounds as good (or better) as the pre-production version, my pre-order definitely stays in.

If he doesn't, just heat up the thermometer a bit while Mrs. Monkey isn't looking. Edit: On another note, I just passed Ray in the lobby. Either he didn't recognize me or he ignored me. I suspect that the former is true.
  15. Drove from Santa Barbara to the CanJam hotel. Got in a party mood that I expect to last until Sunday.
  16. Stacy and I went to hear Fleetwood Mac at the Staples Center last night. Stacy is a huge fan and bought us floor tickets just 16 rows back. The concert was excellent and it was obvious that they were having a great time. Since they don't currently have a new album to promote, they did nothing but oldies. There will be a new album in the near future. Stevie's voice is just starting to degrade a bit, but she still sounds good. Lindsay Buckingham sang and played like he was 25. All in all an enjoyable concert. One of the best things though is that instead of having to drive 2 hours to get back home, we only had to drive 20 minutes to get back to the CanJam hotel.

Dinny, you're looking at this wrong. It's not a problem, it's an opportunity. Now all you need to do is: 1. Say to Mrs. Monkey "I guess the party is off as Little Monkey is sick. That means you won't need me this weekend". 2. Buy round trip ticket to LA and get on a plane. See? Opportunity!

Tyll is going to loan me a power cord. Thanks everybody.
  19. Yes, unless you can figure out a way to get it onto somebody else's room.
  20. $14 / 24 hrs.

Any one of those would be great. Don't worry, I do have a can of Acme Bit & Byte Remover.
  22. 4 days of wireless connectivity at the CanJam hotel.

I'm here too. In unpacking, I see that I forgot a power cord. Would somebody have an extra IEC power cord that they can lend to me. Any cheap old cord will do. In case I have to buy one, could any locals please recommend an easy to reach place close to the hotel? I'm going to go check the bar to see if anybody is hanging out. See you all soon.
  24. How is it? You know what a big Laurindo Almeido fan I am.
  25. Or just explain the situation to Klaus and ask him for suggestions.
