  1. The people from western Mass are OK, it's the people east of 495 that are Massholes. Of course, in the 23 years since I lived there, the event horizon may have expanded somewhat to the west.
  2. It actually made sense. The foreign language requirement was from the old days when many research papers were published in a language other than English (usually German, French or Russian). By the time I entered grad school in 1976 you could find pretty much everything in English. So knowing a computer language was actually more useful for research than knowing a foreign language. In almost 30 years of being a s/w engineer, I've studiously avoided learning Cobol.

He just took that role to prepare for Foxfire.
  4. I had to have a minor in grad school and chose Comp Sci. The use of computers to gather and process lab data was just starting and I thought it was a good minor. We also had a foreign language requirement, and knowledge of a computer language fulfilled it. After a couple of years as a physiology grad student, I was tired of killing things and didn't really like the future path ahead of me. So I made my minor my major. It was one of the smartest moves I've made, probably only second to deciding to go to work for Stratacom rather than ACC (Advanced Computer Communications) in 1996.
  5. Sorry to hear about this Andrew. Hopefully it's just a matter of cleaning up for you rather than repairing damage. Also hope that family is all OK.
  6. Miles Davis - Collectors' Items One of the CDs bought during J&R's sale.
  7. You got up at midnight to join us HC'ers, so you really must like "creepy".
  8. I missed the "as", thereby unwittingly proving your comparison.
  9. Me too, though not her. Congratulations, you managed to drop both. I took almost the exact opposite trip: Biologist --> neurophysiology grad student --> software engineer I suspect that we are both happy with our trips.
  10. Somebody must have been looking for the magic smoke and it appears that they found it.
  11. Wait, isn't she a fully-fledged engineer now? She just graduated from Northwestern and is ready to do anything.
  12. Dan, what do you think of the Kings' trade to get Smyth. It appears that they gave up very little for him. I'm not familiar enough with him to know if it's a good deal or not.
  13. I find it hard to believe that Grado would change the engraving because Les complained, or because of the complaining on HF started by Les' "blurry" post. But even if Grado did decide to change it for that reason, the fault still lies with them for making the decision to change it, and then not ensuring that it was done correctly. Les' complaining about the original may be annoying, but he deserves no blame for the engraving problem.
  14. I think that this might get more people.
  15. I have #15. For once it paid to volunteer for something. Todd didn't pass out the ones he had at CJ in the order people that people ordered them. He first gave them out to people involved with creating and running CanJams past and present. I was a volunteer worker. That's why I got mine at CJ. How many he had left to deliver after that I don't know. So you may or may not have gotten yours, even if you were at CJ.
  16. I'm a huge Neil fan. But I can't see why anybody would have a problem with the Junkies cover of Powderfinger. I like both versions and feel zero need to choose one over another.
  17. Talking about ear buds, you can put together this very nice system: G-Lite > Pico Dac > Yuin PK1 This would beat many, many headphone based systems. Of course Boomana's is a great approach if you insist on headphones: G-Lite > Pico Dac > Grado HF2 If you must base your system around the K701, you'll have to spend enough money to get a good amp that can give them the current and voltage they need to sound their best.

  19. Since nobody else is showing you respect, I guess I won't either. Happy Birthday Mike! :prettyprincess:
  20. We didn't miss it. We felt sorry for the old guy and kept quiet out of respect.
  21. This one just had to be fixed. This thread alone has lowered HCs S/N 10 percentage points. I would expect a thread like this to be elsewhere, not here. Too bad.
  22. Most of us, probably. I suspect that he got much more of an answer than he expected. Now he either has to be quiet or be very technically savvy in a response. I predict that the former will be the case, but I've been known to be wrong from time to time.
  23. You guys should shop here.
  24. Happy Birthday Birgir. Have a great one. :prettyprincess: Please post pictures of the cake.
  25. Are you sure that we can trust them with it? Happy 4th everybody.
