I agree. Plasma still looks so much better than the current crop of whatever. Sure, I bought an led tv recently, but it was just to meet a price point. I guess I'm part of the god damned problem.

NOBODY expects the later-than-the-rest Spanish Inquisition! Happy Birthday, boo! Hope you had a great day!

+1. No reason this should not work. And if it doesn't, you cold still run a vm of W7 and keep your W8 intact.

Do like. He's fuzzy-cute and already has that, "Hey, let's play" look down pat. Have fun!

Suggestions for a solder pot? I just found a few rolls of Cardas wire in a box o' parts, but the strands are all enamel coated. I know I can do this with a solder iron, but a solder pot seems like it would be much faster. Do I really need temperature control? This one at Amazon seems fine, but I'd rather the cost were below that somehow magic $100 mark. Many thanks.

Glass Jar Audio Jeff Rossel? He's slow as hell. Amazing that someone with such poor customer service continues to have customers. He will get you your product, and whatever you are ordering will be just fine. You'll just have to wait.

Jeff is notorious for doing that. I never understood why. He has such a good thing going but repeatedly disappears like that. Sure, give him a call. He's good for it, just really slow.

notoriously gloomy Pacific Northwest. We only report that it's notoriously gloomy here to keep people from wanting to move here. Otherwise, it was 80 and sunny yesterday.

And as it turns out, I ended up ordering the stuff at Jameco. PLC Center has a $50 order minimum. They mention that they charge a fee if the order is less than $50. What that means is that if your order is $1.50, the fee would be $48.50... /nothanks

Has anyone used PLC Center? http://www.plccenter.com/en-US They have a couple of Fairchild semi's that I need (http://www.plccenter.com/en-US/Search/Advanced?PartNumber=2N5457%20). Good/bad experience? Thanks!

Thanks, Doug. Sorry. EL34. The small tubes are 12AT7 and 12AX7. The sockets are: Belton Micalex, 8 Pin Octal PC Mount Long Lead ARS #P-ST8-209MIPPCL ($17.5) 9 Pin PC Mount Standoff Miniature, (Belton) ARS #P-ST9-620 ($13.75) I'll post up some pics as requested. Now that I am looking at the parts list, that Belton Micalex is just an 8 pin octal, so I would imagine there are shorter versions. More soon.

I've taken on a tube project, a box of parts, a populated board and a case. The 9-pin sockets, as well as the EL34 sockets are soldered directly to the board. Problem is, the EL84 sockets are about 9mm taller. I've been dreaming up ways of accommodating the extra height for the larger sockets (a stepped top on the case seemed the easiest to implement). But, are there any socket extenders or parts which I could use to get these closer in height without having to resort to case mods? I have run across some of the old-style socket savers, but they appear too tall. What if the EL84 sockets were attached directly to the top and the smaller tubes had some sort of, dunno, metal tube in between. Am I missing anything? Thanks!

No kidding. Make it stop, already! Oddly enough, the Seattle area has been completely blanked in the snow category.

Happy Birthday, your royal Seedness.

They do have quite a few colors as well. I mean, besides the obvious off-whites and all.

This is excellent. I completely agree. Also good. This is why I finally punted for my own room and called ASC. The guy I talked to on the phone (at length, repeatedly) spent many previous years of his life working with audio, sales, etc. Really knowledgeable and friendly. And the ASC Tube Traps have some reflective and some non-reflective parts to the traps. That way you can rotate them to dial in what works best for your room. On the diffusion side, adding some damping to the side walls is obviously good. Keep in mind you can space two or more and begin to defeat comb filtering as well. I hadn't thought of that until I spoke to the chap at ASC. I think the ideal spot for speaker placement differs for audio vs home theater. Audio/stereo would bring the speakers out about a third of the room length in to the room. Home theater would have them further back, close to the wall where your display is so that they diffuse more. Along with the Ethan Winer site listed above, read up at ASC. Lots of free and good info. Also, here's ASC's HT site. I probably sound like a fanboy, but I get a lot more out of my system now that I have tube traps. And whenever I think I'm fooling myself, I just take the traps out for a minute and realize how crappy the room sounds.

Roku stick for Amazon video...well, that was the last of my gripes. I'll have to go take a listen.

Good lord, I'm back at work today. Although the idea seemed ridiculous this morning when the alarm went off, getting back in to a schedule and moving forward with some projects at work will be good.

Happy Birthday, zipster!
