  1. Freaky Fremont. Never mind the annual naked cyclist parade.

    hi everyone

How much do you love headphones?
  3. Just changed the volume pot on the Ventus to a 10K ALPS RK27. Nice upgrade for the short time it took.

  4. Thanks, all! When I was studying, I really didn't listen to a lot of music. Music seems to hit a part of my brain that disallows me concentration on much else. Consequently, when I was really trying to build logical code, no music was the best option, unfortunately. Now, however, whatever I am listening to sounds better . Less stress, maybe. With really good jazz, it's almost as if I'm just gulping down the tunes, like a man left hungry for weeks when he finally emerges from the desert to see he is in Vegas. gulp, grin, gulp. The human brain is pretty amszing. More music, please! Damn this feels good!
  5. Make that the JRC4558 opamp.
  6. I AM DONE! Third Quarter complete. Grade: A. Unless I get a zero on my last assignment and my instructor suddenly croaks, I have successfully completed coursework for the UW Java Certificate Program. It was frustrating, time consuming, mind bending, educational, job boosting fun. Now I can be a real ass in code reviews at work and have the background to say why. I feel quite liberated. And must drink some more!
  7. That's right. A few upgrades and tweaks for the old gal. On the list will be opamps, wiring reroutes and upgrades, power supply changes. First up, I'm going to remove these JRC4735B opamps (assuming I have correctly identified them) and replace them with...dunno. After reading up a bit it appears that these are part of the problem with this player sounding so dark. I'll have to do some comparisons, but it seems like an OPA2134 could be a candidate, or an AD8610 (or 20). Guesses? I'll have to check the pinouts to be sure.
  8. I'm mixed on this. I bought a DVP-S9000ES in 2001 or so. I also grabbed quite a few SACDs on the way. Now, post format-wars, I have enough to consider just getting a high-zoot universal player so I don't have to part with some of the titles. I don't know where that leaves me. I'd almost like to just go back to having just a sweet CD player and a turntable. Also, for buying new and used music, if you want to avoid flea-bay, you might wander out to gemm.com. I've not used them but heard good things about it. http://gemm.com/
  9. Get drunk. Barf on the carpet. Walk away.
  10. Outstanding. Although I wonder how he'll spin this to influence the flock.
  11. Did you notice your two photos are nearly identical? The old Pentax K-1000 required one to set the camera at 1/60 at F5.6. Depends on ISO setting and desired effect...
  12. FTW. Someone posted a greasemonkey script around here somewhere. It's the only way I'll look at that site any more.
  13. That nails it.
  14. Summer reading selection: The Sublime Engine: A Biography of the Human Heart By: Stephen Amidon, Thomas Amidon MD The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer By: Siddhartha Mukherjee Lymphedema: A Breast Cancer Patient's Guide to Prevention and Healing Jeannie Burt, Gwen White ..and finally... Naked By: David Sedaris Oddly, on the heels of my java studies I crave medical books. The heart book will be interesting since one of the co-authors was my cardiologist for quite some time. And the Mukherjee book - once I read the first few pages I had to get it. He's quite a writer.
  15. Awesome, Tyll. And measurements to boot (proving super suckage). Ballsosteel Award.
  16. RMAF would be cool. Doc B. is always there, so that would easily be worth the trip. Might be fun to show up and have our own ClanJam. We can press up a batch of No Huddler-Fi shirts for the occasion.

    Audeze LCD-2

Tyll, have you measure the new ones?
  18. I've had tons of interconnects pass through my house and audio system. All were copper, silver coated copper or some form of copper. I've even built a bunch myself. Some are getting old now, and yet not one of them has any type of green tint, tinge, or suggestion of a green coloring to it. I don't think you were sold snake oil, I think you didn't do any homework before your purchase to figure out what cryoparts is selling. Google owns over 1 million servers around the world. Surely a search for CFDCT-UP-OCC would turn up something related to silver. And yet, the first few links are at Whiplash audio, where CFDCT-UP-OCC is described as, "... the custom formulated LL-PE dielectric, the copper used (CF-DCT-UPOCC) and the cryo profile used to treat it (our proprietary CryoFreezeâ„¢ process)." This is here http://www.whiplashaudio.com/twcu-hook-up-wire.html in case you think I'm full of shit. Incidentally, I think the CF in that model number just stands for "cryo freeze." But to complicate this further, cryo-parts lists this: "...We are proud to introduce a VERY special custom wire, CryoParts "The Wire; Silver". "The Wire; Silver", or "TWag" is a CFDCT-UP-OCC stranded silver wire that sets a new standard of performance. Everything about "TWag" is custom; the extraordinarily high strand count, the custom formulated LL-PE dielectric, the silver used (CF-DCT-UPOCC) and the cryo profile used to treat it (our proprietary CryoFreezeâ„¢ process)." Amazing: either the rapture has started and copper is silver, or you've been fooled like a religious hopefuls.

    Audeze LCD-2

Tyll this is outstanding. Thanks for measuring and posting your results. I listened to these last year on some unfamiliar gear and didn't notice the issue. I suppose I should borrow a pair and try them out again with this info in mind. Now that I know, it'll probably stand out.
  20. Wow. You put some bucks towards this. Why? I mean, it sounds like you won and Lee is a snakeoil schuyster who takes cell phone videos at the local park. Is that what you wanted? This makes me suspicious of cheapo cable manufacturers, but I was already suspicious of cheapo cable manufacturers.
  21. These sound worlds better with the grilles off. The grilles are this strange plastic mesh with grille cloth over the top. I'm sure they were trying to make them safer for the speaker drivers within. Remove them for sure. My first pair of Jamos were the CS5 self-powered computer speakers. I wish they still made these. Bi-amped two-way speakers with 1/8" headphone output. Except that the volume pot is scratchy and needs replacing (definitely doing that this fall), mine are still kick-ass.
  22. Good point. Although I think about the countless thousands spent for this guy's continued miscalculations. Oh well, I guess if people are willing to believe, then a fool and his money shall soon be parted. On the other hand...
  23. Beat that old bastard to the ground.
  24. Underrated Jamo C603 Speakers. I bought a pair in June of 2009 and really like them. I was amazed that with an old receiver they sounded great, and when connected to my bigrig system they surprised me with some great sound. Not totally refined or anything, but great for their price range. I can't imagine a better deal for $300 speakers.
