make sure your cable modem isn't also doing nat in the same ip range... my modem does nat out to my router (instead of just handing out the isp assigned ip directly), and it uses 192.168.1.1-254/255.255.255.0... i just make my wifi router use 10.0.0.1-254/255.0.0.0, works great... mjb

Linux Gurus, I need some help, please....

"/bin/ls cannot access *" isn't referring to "/bin/ls" not being accessible, it is the "install" app trying to execute "/bin/ls *" and the "*" is not expanding as it would on the shell. i.e. when you type "ls *" from a shell (or run "ls *" from a shell script), the "*" is expanded by the shell to all non-hidden (i.e. not starting with a ".") files. since it appears "install" is an executable, it is probably doing a 'system("/bin/ls *");' in the C code, which would not be expanded, so "ls" is literally looking for a file named "*", which it can't find. so, because it's presumably being called to do a check of the current directory's contents, but is erroring out, the "install" app is just giving the error you're seeing based on the call to "ls" which is failing for it. if you run "strace /tmp/install >install.out 2>&1" (without the quotes) it will give you the gory details of exactly what that app is doing, down to the kernel level system calls, in a file called "install.out" in the current directory. mjb -
k240s's today, from a local pro audio place who always seems to have tons of nos stuff (got a pair of hd580's a few weeks ago too)... i bought them because i needed a pair of something for my iphone... saw them hooked-up to an ipod touch in JBLoudG20's sig... having gear in your sig is helpful mjb

another thing to do is buy one from best buy a day or two after the new ones come out...they discount them a couple hundred $ to get rid of them...that way you get a new one, you can get it in-person/store and save almost as much as a refurb you have to order online (does apple also charge shipping for refurb?)... mjb -
the headphone jack (i.e. laptop's internal soundcard dac and amp hp out) on the laptop is crap (for a number of different reasons), but as an amplifier, it is far more "open" and "powerful" sounding (read: not necessarily louder)...the predator amp just makes everything sound more compressed, thin and slightly more distorted than even the laptop. that said, the predator dac is really not half bad, in fact when i run the hp out as a "line-out" to a different device, it sounds ok...sort of like any other $200 dac might sound...nothing special ) mjb
-
i've decided that, to me, the predator's dac sounds pretty good, but the amp, not so much... even though it's within the 30 days, i was actually just going to sell it since i don't like returning stuff if it lives up to my expectations and i'm only moving on to something else...but i've concluded that overall, i prefer my dell laptop headphone jack as an amp...which in my book, falls quite short of expectations mjb

i picked up a predator about a week ago and am really enjoying it for what it is... i have yet to hear a pico, so my enjoyment of the predator is relative to no other portable 1-boxen to me, the amp section does not sound like a hornet nor an sr-71...not sure if i like it or not...it isn't bad though. there is some sort of synergy with the dac, since i think it sounds better from the dac than input. i have no use for portable gear (just something that will fit in a backpack for transport to work where i plug it in). i'm almost certain i'll go back to a da10 or minidac and sell the predator in the next week or so (mostly because i don't want to wait a month or two for a pico...but i am very eager to hear one some day) mjb

or you could take Rega's position that you shouldn't clean your vinyl (unless it's really grimy) and just play and listen... much of the click/pop artifacts vinyl is famous for come from poorly configured systems (tracking, weight, etc)... vinyl makes the sound so much more organic...you can hear/feel the humanity in the sound. vinyl is a hand written letter, digital is the typed equivalent...same words, same linguistic info being conveyed in both, but the type is missing so much more subtle information outside of the simplistic "what information is being conveyed by these words" question. mjb

you need a functional programmer if you want the best... try to find someone who does haskell...it's a good sign they're both interested in fp and probably good at it (as it is a more obscure language with a strong community of smart fp geeks) mjb

actually, that comment was referring to our society in general, not just the so-called gen y'ers or the younger generations... yeah, not the apocolypse...maybe more like the idiocracy http://imdb.com/title/tt0387808/ (which is an hilarious movie btw) mjb

that forum, as most others, exist not so much to inform but are more a social setting. the information is gathered and compiled by virtue of the discussion centered around a narrow set of topics and as has been said, could easily be maintained in a more orderly/clean/maintainable/searchable format... but "a setting to share information" is only a small portion of the role a discussion forum plays for most. i personally prefer the "direct" community aspect of a forum setting (even though i have to deal with assholes who insult me about my signature or don't search before asking questions or don't contribute any insightful info or etc), i gain enjoyment from the signal despite the noise...and i'd argue it's the noise which helps one hone-in on the useful information by virtue of the contrast. i agree with the comments about the "entitlement gen", but i think it's a societal shift, more about brand, packaging, looks...less about substance... those IT types, they think it's more about "where i went to school" than "what can i accomplish", so they probaby think they're worth 100k based upon some ranking of their school. mjb

thanks!

you're absolutely right...it was an assholefacish thing of me to do... i appologize to anyone i've offended and/or pissed off. sorry. p.s. i'd put this in the first post if i could edit... mjb

i can't stand the pro's keyboard... i'm hoping the next gen's (hopefully in january) will have better keyboards...then it'll be time to upgrade (and put it in my sig ) mjb

so basically, either you're being generous so people don't have to make the extra click to look at your profile or you're just "a healthy level of vain" (e.g. make me jealous, show me i'm an asshole, because i can, etc)...not sure why everyone gets upset about that. i know when i try to deceive myself about the real reason i do something, i'm happy to have it pointed out to me... mjb

any digital connection is only as good as the transport's transmitting quality and the DAC's receiving quality...not just the cable. mjb

dude, don't take it so personally... our gear is important to us, we are proud of the time and effort we go through to create our system...if i were proud of my system, i'd put it in my sig too... (well, i'll put it in there anyway) i don't know what happened over the last couple weeks, but i go back to hf today and there's all these people that have these 20-30 line sigs full of everything electronic that they own... mjb
-
is it that you are that vain and shallow? is it what defines who you are? or some other reason? mjb [requested edit for mjb] it was an assholefacish thing of me to do... i appologize to anyone i've offended and/or pissed off. sorry. p.s. i'd put this in the first post if i could edit... mjb

that's the thing...i actually think the 650's scale down better than the 600/580, so i always much preferred it to a 600/580 with low power, but it was like drinking a fantastic coffee luke warm. as for grado's, even though they work pretty well with low power amping because of their low resistence, i just can't stand grado's without a really good source (which is typically absent in a low amp power situation)... this is why i found this hp to be a good fit for me in this situation and hadn't really considered it before (hence this post ) mjb

i thought it would be informative...the whole spin of listening to the 595 as a compliment to the preferred 650, rather than as a headphone on its own merits...but thanks for the comments, they certainly diffuse the butt-kissing gestault of the thread as a whole. ) p.s. sometimes my inner sennheiser fanboy flairs up mjb
