  1. Just a follow up on my SS Mini build where I used the MPSW thru-hole transistors instead of the PZTA SMD version. Listening tonight, after 1 hour or so, the chassis top measured a max of 46°C, and scanning inside with the IR gun showed a max of 66°C. I did not remove the top to scan individual devices, but placing my hand on the top ( after 1 hour and 2 hours), it seems like it runs considerably cooler than I remember the SMD versions that I built. Sounds great as well, though I think the same as the SMD version.
  2. Still on the Catherine Wheel kick (and Curve...) My son got CDs for me of: Pretty damn good. Not a fan of the close miked technique vs. their previous whole band in the studio approach (Ferment and Chrome), but very clean. I'd heard some of these on a youtube video live at the Bowery in NYC. I like the live a bit better, but not bad. My son also got me this: I like (got this from this thread I think, maybe Stretch posting a track?). Very '80s-ish with analog synth (Prophet?). And then I had to scratch an itch I've had for awhile and listen to ELP live at Isle of Wight almost 50 years ago doing Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition... pretentious as hell? Check. Enjoyable? Check. Still love listening to Greg Lake. What a voice! Still wish I had the CD of whichever album they had out which had the live Tarkus where Lake launched into the King Crimson "Epitaph". I know I have it on vinyl, but need to set my Thorens up again It's been years.
  3. So are all y'all now on the Sony bandwagon? I was thinking about getting an LG OLED in the near future after all the recs here but sounds like some of you have had problems with them? And Jeff, didn't you just buy 3 LGs when you were outfitting the new abode? And you got rid of all 3 of those? Android doesn't sound appealing, but I would prefer something reliable. Still using my 42" Panasonic plasma, which is working great (once I fixed the little PSU daughterboards, which wasn't too difficult).
  4. Usually the Stax topic is where you find the links (since Kevin retired from Northwestern University). docs: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B7egryukiT7_TFlEQlBRejdVdDQ gerbers (for PCBs): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B_iJFfZStuVhSE5nOHBVdTByR1k The TO-3 transistors used for that might be problematic to find. This might help: https://www.diyaudio.com/forums/solid-state/106973-krell-484081-484002-output-transistors-remplaces-codes-help.html Not sure if there is a BOM floating around anywhere for that version of the PSU. EDIT: Ahhh, right above, Rumina is using that PSU version for his KSA clone. Looks like MJ15024 and MJ15025.
  5. Happy Birthday Ric!

  7. Ad Astra: pretty good but agreed not up to Gravity or Interstellar Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: enjoyed this one! Entertaining, kept my attention. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. ^ probably. At 1% tolerance, a 390R could be as high as 394 and a 402R as low as 398. A better question is where are you sourcing the MPSW06/56 transistors from, since they were discontinued awhile ago. Most of these that you might find on eBay/alibaba, etc. are most likely fakes.
  9. I wired up a pair of RCAs and reinstalled the jumpers to set the amp to SE input last night. Running a signal from my mAudio FW into it, the R channel was working but the L was not, so it appears it is an amp problem and there probably isn’t anything wrong with the switch and input wiring. Although why, with nothing connected to the back panel, and the back panel off of the amp, so not touching anything, am I seeing 10 ohms from the XLR pin 1s to the back panel and XLR shells? Odd unless it has to do with the particular Neutrik jacks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. I was adding a switch to my brother's NewClassD amp, but am having a curious situation. The switch was to go between SE->bal (4PDT), wired up basically like what Kerry did with the relays on the mini ss DYnalo: Everything ohms out correctly, but when I went to test it, the R channel works perfectly (in either position), but no sound from the L channel. I took it all apart tonight (not the switch and input wiring), but disconnected from the amp boards, etc. Everything once again ohms out perfectly, no shorts. L- and R- shorted to gnd when switch is in SE position, straight thru then not. The XLRs are the metal Neutriks like the NC3MD-LX-HE, etc. The only thing odd that I noticed is the shell of the XLRs to pin 1 or the panel ohms out at ~10 ohms. This is with nothing connected (like the schematic above... the connections to the amp are open). The RCAs are isolated from the panel, and the shell grounds aren't connected to anything, though they are touching the panel. Otherwise, all the grounds are isolated, and the ground wires (pin 1 on the XLRs and the sleeves on the RCAs) are not connected to anything. Perplexing, and not sure why or if that could cause the L channel not to work. I know when my brother built the amp a few years ago, he could not get the balanced connections to work, but not sure exactly what symptoms he found then. Any thoughts?
  11. Happy Birthday Todd!
  12. Ugggh... I agree with you about the decision to go table only Craig. Are these guys not directly associated with SME? http://www.smetonearms.com/
  13. Happy Birthday Bryan!
  14. Same here when I worked as a tech for a semiconductor manuf. probe floor. We had Teradyna and ESI lasers which would do repairs to memory chips (blowing links to remove and patch in redundant cells). All of the laser bays had interlocked doors with lights outside when we were doing maintenance on them. Opening a door would cut power to the laser. Goggles required. Also had my retinas photographed, which was a good time. Don't fuck around with these as Craig mentioned.

    His Dark Materials

New HBO series based on Philip Pullman book trilogy. Stars James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson and Dafne Keen. I caught the first episode and will be watching it, even though I haven't read the books.

  19. I bought the album after listening to these based on this post. Actually, these guys remind me of Roxy Music alot. I will have to say that this is massively overproduced (even though I do like it).

    Watchmen

I've been watching (and enjoying) it, and have never read the comics. I did see the movie however. Don't know that I'm entirely lost, and the HBO show seems much different than the movie, from what I recall of it...
  21. Mass suckage Cali peeps! Stay safe and hopefully no larger impact! Me: in the hospital. Beth had her hip replacement surgery this morning and all went well. Resting I her room now. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
