  1. Happy Birthday Dan!
  2. Still trying to wrap my head around all of this... so these things are professional audio interfaces, and you guys are using them as your DACs in your home systems?
  3. A nearly 3 month old thread... you have your 1st post and you recommend something that was already recommended back in early December? Not a good start.
  4. Curious... I’m building a Carbon for a European user and don’t have any Stax to test it with. If I can’t find a pair I can borrow, which one of these would you buy: the Monoprice, or the Kaldas Resaech RR1s? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  6. Hehe... that is the exact reaction when I brought one of the SS Mini's into work with my Fostex's. When I plugged the headphones in and then had to plug a cable from my phone in, my boss said "Oh, no Bluetooth?". Then he listened to it and said it sounded really good. But in a sort of non-understanding way...
  7. Most of the people I work with in a tech company think whatever Bluetooth shit you buy at Best Buy is the end-all be-all of the best sound you can get. They don’t even really comprehend that it could be better, and frankly don’t care. 128k MP3s are just fine with them. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. Bought a used Oppo BDP-103. I'll let you know what I think once I get it.

  13. Not sure, they might work. I took a look on diyaudio. Not much discussion or mention of the BF256C. I did find this: alternative transistors, not as costly as the Toshibas SK170 and much easier to source could be the BF256C and the BF246A/247A. The former is a bit higher in noise (still sufficient for highlevel circuits), the latter features much higher Idss which allows for larger source resistor values and for higher bias currents, which could be advantageous in output buffers and buffers that need to drive capacitive loads -which is a very common case with filters. https://www.diyaudio.com/forums/analog-line-level/169005-jfet-active-crossover-3.html#post2227453 EDIT: and from earlier in that thread from the same poster: well regarding soundjudgements aren´t easy, because everybody has a different taste. To me all OP-Amp filters I built sounded artficial to a certain degree. I never doubted to listen to a reproduction of music. The first discrete JFET-filter changed that. Now there was music a lifelike quality which sounded authentic. Music instead of HiFi. I know that distortion-wise the simple Buffer is very good, but dosen´t reach a OP´s low values. But the...who cares about distortion figures, which -as we know for 30 years now- don´t correlate at all with the sonic impression? Noisewise even the BF256C settles around -100dB, the BF246A, 2SK373, 2SK170 beeing even better. So noise should be no big issue. Hum can be an issue in every circuit and typically it depends alot more on the circuits surroundings than on the circuit itself. A different thread, but doesn't sound promising: https://www.diyaudio.com/forums/pass-labs/145201-building-symmetrical-psu-b1-buffer-230.html#post2794067 I'd probably just go ahead and try them, observing pinout, but without the correct part or know equivalent, it might be hard to tell.

  15. Happy Birthday Jeff! And, yes, that does look like Jeff's lake by his house once he gets done with it
  16. RIP Kirk,
  17. RIP Mr. Gilbert. Sounds like an interesting person! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. Thanks for all you do to keep this place running Todd!
  19. To echo what Dusty said, you normally won’t see much if any file compatibility issues with Office files in terms of formatting, etc. Back when I was using VBA code at work a lot in Excel, when using the file at home, in many cases there were workarounds for missing functions (such as Split at the time). Slower, but worked. There are compile or runtime flags (ifmac or something like that) that would only use the VBA workaround on a Mac. As to the Catalina question, I am not even though my 2012 i7 Mini can use it. I just updated it to High Sierra this weekend. I have some 32-bit programs I still use, Mac Office 2011 among them, so am hesitant to go above where I am at currently. I’m also not sure what the current Catalina verdict is as well. 20. EDIT: from a 2015 post by Laowei, he recommended a Wima MKS2C034701C00JSSD. Mouser of course has these and anything close on order for February. Looking on Digikey, I see a Kemet R82EC3470DQ70J, which didn't come up on my Mouser search, but they of course do have (and in stock). I'll probably just wait for the Wimas.
  21. Thanks James. I have plenty of GRLV PCBs. I was thinking about looking for a dual GRHV board. Not sure yet. On the BOM I was using (which supposedly was the latest, with the 182R resistors), there were some Nichicon 0.47uf/50V caps (647-QYX1H474KTP) which don't even come close to fitting the board. These are 7.5mm LS and should be 5mm LS. The body on these things is huge, and would require bending resistors to fit them in. Who the fuck did this BOM anyhow? Any recommendation for a suitable cap here?
  22. I’d still go with the Mac... but I’ve used them for years... more like decades Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  23. Starting on building a Carbon for a French friend here on the forum (DrizztDo). I built one of the SS Mini Dynalos for him a year or so ago, and he asked if I would be willing to build some other shit for him (including a UGS Muse preamp ?), and I said yes, since he was very pleasant to deal with. At any rate, using the latest BOM I could find, I wound up with some 182R resistors that I find no markings for. Searching the thread, I find some references stating that these should go to 120R, and the boards have one 120R marking on them... go figure. Questions: has anyone used Vishay/BC MRS25 resistors in a Carbon? They are rated at the same voltage as the KOA Speer MF1/2 are (which is what I am using elsewhere)? Just asking since I have a pair of 120R MRS25s. He sent along some of the left/right GRHV boards (which I asked about earlier). I would prefer to use one of the dual GRHV boards in order to do a mwl168-style universal PSU, which could accommodate a GG or other tube stat amp for him in the future. Anyone have a spare they would be willing to sell? I would like to do a 2 transformer build, with GRLV for the +/-15V supply, so 2 PSU boards and 2 transformers. What size of aluminum angle do most of you use for the heatsinking? 1 x 1 x 1/8"? Or? Do I need to use PEEK screws for the HV transistors, or are steel screws with the appropriate insulators around both the screws and the transistor/bracket OK? Thanks!
  24. Agreed. The biggest difference I find is in Excel VBA support. I use a pc at work with Office 365, and have Mac Office 2011 and 2016 on my Mac(s) at home. It is getting better on the Mac but still not at parity. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  25. RIP Kobe! That is terrible. And with his daughter. I don't follow BB much, but he seemed like a classy player, and that he was doing good things since he retired from BB.
