  1. Got the Buffalo yesterday and got it up and running now. It sounds very good (as many of you already know). I'm running it using my Rotel 855 as a transport and can switch back and forth to compare the Buffalo to the TDA1541a and discrete stage in the Rotel. They actually are a lot closer in sound than I thought they would be... the Buffalo doesn't embarrass the Rotel at all, though it does sound better (slightly better fleshed out in the mids and slightly darker). The TDA (std.; not a double crown or anything) sounds just a touch grainy compared to the Buffalo, which I expected. I am enjoying listening to this!
  2. Rotel RCD-991 CDP. PMD100 HDCD and 2x PCM63P. Sony laser mech instead of Philips (as in you can find them and they don't cost $100). Going to take a serious look at some mods; output stage, possible clocking, etc. These are supposed to be built very well; I guess I'll find out once it gets here. Need to find a remote for it. If anyone has suggestions feel free...
  3. Happy Birthday!
  4. What happened there? Something to do with the Millett Max?
  5. Damn... when you say you're going to build something, you don't fuck around, do you? Looks good. And nice table saw (as if I know much about them, but it looks good).
  6. If you want to go back to when CDs were introduced, most vinyl single LPs of the time were around $7 (IIRC ). The record labels promised that these new CDs being introduced would drop in price from the initial $15 or so down to less than LPs due to economy of scale once production ramped up. This of course never happened (the dropping of price, not the ramp up). And yes, the record labels are hitting it out of the park in terms of new talent
  7. There are alot of people who wouldn't even consider spending $1000 for their entire system... And I thought CD sales were going in the crapper (due to MP3s)? I don't hang out at Best Buy much at all, but do buy a CD occasionally there. Their CD section seems to have shrunk alot.
  8. Happy Birthday!!!
  9. Happy New Year to all!
  10. It's still your birthday here in Chicago
  11. Happy Birthday both of yez!
  12. Happy Birthday Reks! Try to stay out of the basement today...
  13. Happy Birthday!
  14. Posting the car without saying what was in it is pretty misleading. The '67 Camaro could have been a 6-banger, or V8... possibly a 327 (or was it still 283 in '67???) or even a big block (396 for sure, 427 was also probably available). The Cuda could also have been a 6-banger, a 318, a 340, 440 (think so in 72) and maybe even a 426 hemi. My first car was a '70 Chevelle SS396 4spd. Sometimes I wish I still had it For my son's sake, I'm glad that I don't.
  15. John Westlake (formerly of Cambridge and Pink Triangle IIRC, though I am not sure of all of his history) posted a link to a DAC that he designed recently using the ESS Sabre DAC as the basis: Signal Path International - Era Speakers & Peachtree Audio - Introducing Nova Reference thread on diyaudio: diyAudio Forums - Da-capo issue (John W?) - Page 16 Might be a good option for those interested in the Sabre but not up to building your own. EDIT: John Westlake seems to know his shit from all I have seen from him on a couple of forums so I would think anything he is involved in would be worth a listen. I have not heard this DAC (and wouldn't be the one to judge it anyhow since I don't use external DACs), so take it in that light.
  16. That was my initial thought. The CD is Enya Watermark (Reprise label). It is in good condition, and this is on a dual G5 powermac, so no parallels installed.
  17. Happy Birthday!
  18. Happy Birthday!
  19. I was going to burn a copy of a commercial audio CD and could not get it to load. No messages, etc. It just makes some noise, then the drive ejects it. I tried some other audio CDs and they loaded fine... any ideas?
  20. Happy Birthday! I hope you don't get to spend it shopping!
  21. I'd take 30 degrees... its 2 here right now (Chi). Yesterday's high was -3
  22. Was this the local shop with the please take these weird ass transistors off my hands...
  23. You bastard...
  24. Or lack thereof... I've never listened to Satriani (other than the thing he is suing Coldplay over). As for shredders (is that the term?), do bands such as Dragonforce (IIRC) fit more or less under this category?
