Very ambitious! Were you planning on implementing this in a somewhat modular fashion? I might be interested in the volume controller and the I/O incl. muting, etc. for a preamp project, but would not need items such as temp. monitoring, current monitoring, etc.

We've had this discussion a couple of pages back. After making a similar comment (fugly, about the amp ), I agree that I would much rather have the money spent inside the unit than outside, as is the wont of some vendors. That I can certainly respect.

I've got some Canare, either blue or red, and plenty of Neutrik minis as well which I would be happy to contribute. I also have enough Mogami mini if that would work better.

I most enjoy the episodes where Bourdain is a guest judge... none this year . I don't care for the new Brit judge so far.

Nate (n_maher) has never mentioned anything about transformer hum with the one he got. These are potted as well as shielded, so maybe that's the difference? Plitron charges extra for electrostatic screening and shielding (http://www.plitron.com/standard_spec.asp) and I could not find potting listed, although I see some transformers on their site that are in cans. I already have a transformer (well, it isn't here yet), so I don't have a horse in this race. Just wanted to point out that extra charges will apply particularly for a single chassis build.

For (quite) awhile, it seemed like everytime I dropped into the AA DIY forum, I thought I had entered an Oyaide forum by mistake. Discussions of which outlet faceplate (or none) sounded better, yada yada... I've never heard that before? Interesting. Any references?

I was under the impression that non-DIYers could still get an amp built, as that was one of the stated goals on the first page? I had assumed that whoever is building the boards would test them, etc. and these woud be provided ready to go. I also assumed that a full case and all other parts would be available, including FPE panels, etc. so that the DIYer could construct the amp without having to deal with all of the chassis work, etc.? Basically put the amp together with a minimum of wiring to do?

According to the DA and Transport List, this used: SONIC FRONTIERS SFD-2 2 x UltraAnalog D20400A – SM5803AP Had it been a MkII, it would have had the PMD100 instead of the SM5803AP. Same parts as a Mark Levinson No. 30, PS Audio Ultralink. Of course the supporting circuitry, output stage, etc. is probably completely different, so just cuz it has the same chips in it may not mean much.

No USB should make no difference. Coax, yes. Should be at least 1.5m to minimize the effect of reflections. Some subscribe to that theory. Others go opposite (short ICs, long speaker cables (I think Mapleshade might advocate this,but I don't get their catalogs anymore).

I think we need a level of interest check among the various peeps here, per vvs' post. It seems there is a wide range of expectations as to what this is and what it will include, running the gamut from j4cbo' post on the 13th to I guess my expectation (basically a pair of boards, stuffed optional). I can certainly understand and support the concept of a group build to allow different types and levels of involvement, differentiating this from a simple group buy for some PCBs as the previous Dynahi/Dynalo, etc. activities have been. I also sense that I am probably in the minority in terms of expectation?

From what I have seen in deemphasis is normally handled in the output stage. This is from the stock output stage of a Rotel 855. The FET (T401?) either turns on or off according to the DEEM signal, and shorts out the 5.6M resistor feeding the upper portion of the feedback loop (the bottom portion of 1.5k resistor and 2.4nf cap would be normal 1st order filter stuff for a TDA1541a). I've never looked at the DEEM signal to determine whether the FET is on or off normally, but I would assume it turns on if the preemphasis flag is set. All discrete stages I have seen ignore deemphasis. Mine uses a simple 1st order filter (1.5k resistor, 1.2nf cap). I've wondered whether I needed to do anything more, but believed that CDs using this were quite rare?

Another thing that I am definitely going to use in mine is an e12 board... actually the modified one I did up awhile ago and use in my Dynalo. This one uses a 555 timer, but more importantly has a manual mute switch; nice for changing headphones without worries LED drivers/outputs for normal and mute/fault states option to tie fault test ground (pin 2 of the opamp) to the amp ground Most of you seem to be planning on doing balanced DynaFETs; the ability to deal with 4 channels (or more?) must be addressed if any are interested in this. Since this is Amb's design, even though more or less open source, it should be run past him to see if he objects. I suppose pairs of standard e12s would work for the most part also.
