    iMod craze

I have a iMod with the ALO Super cotton cable (blackgates). I also have the Auricap recharging dock in red wood. Ken has also sent me the Vcap doc in it's new form factor, the same as my Auricap Dock if you want to check it out. The new Vcap doc is slightly taller than the Auricap one. There is a distinct difference between the Super Cotton cable and the Auricap with the Auricap reminding me of my Lavry DA10. The Auricap doc compares to the Vcap with the Vcap being slightly warmer and maybe (?) more transparent. For my money the Vcap does not win me over the Auricap. I am glad I purchased the Auricap doc. Another thing if you go this path get yourself a good RCA to whatever plug your amp takes. I have the Xin Reference with the quarter input so I can get better signal transfer this way as well. These docks are nice in that you can listen while charging at the same time. Remember Capacitors don't add, at least I would hope not, anything to the sound or signal. The different caps just get out of the way with each type doing something a little different to the signal in different ways producing what people attribute to them as their different sounds or color. Vcaps are considered to get out of the way most between these three being discussed here. As I was posting this I got a warning of another post and it is very much like this paragraph here.

    closed cans!

I am sorry have not heard those. I have the UE9 and love it. I have had the Proline 2500 and enjoyed those. I would say the HFI-780 is scary close to the UE9 in sound profile. I just wonder how it will sound after a proper period. These are detailed while being smooth. The sound image width is very wide. The bass is very satisfying to me. The highs in my view are not rolled off. Did you get a chance to check out the frequency curve comparison between the UE9 and these: So take it for what my view is worth. I tend to enjoy anything I am listening to at the time. But I did take them over to my UE9 for a quike compare and they hold up well for being 200$ headphones.

    closed cans!

I know that Ultrasone headphones are not much appreciated around there but I just got a pair of the new HFI-780s today. I like the "S-Logic" thing and of course I like the Edition 9. Well I think these could be a low priced UE9 if my evaluation is anything. I am really surprised in how good these sound out of the box. But again I enjoy any headphone that is on my head at the time so I am not really apparently a very critical evaluator. So if you get the chance please take a listen and tell me what you think. Most of you don't have much of an issue doing this as I can tell. Actually I am really enjoying what I am hearing out of these...these could be call baby UE9s as far as I am concern. They have much of the same sound feel to me. They do qualify for this thread since they are closed and for 200$ US they represent a great buy.
  4. I know, it is hard for me to tell sometimes too. My wife doesn't either so she has learned to take me with a grain of salt and go on about her business.

I had to go with the Ultrasone Edition 9s. Cheaper alternative is the ATH-ESW9. These are very different but both are very enjoyable.
  6. Sounds like a positive outcome to me. I am glad it has worked for you as a conditioner as well. Did you read about the technology behind it? The Brickwall is seems to be a chock with capacitance while the Zerosurge seems have it's chock changed into a transformer with just enough secondary output to be feed back into the circuit to cancel out any surges that come through and of course with the capacitance of the Brickwall. At least that is how I understand about it. Any clarification would be appreciate. I have also noticed that it seems to function somewhat like a UPS but for those very short burst of lost power, say a tenth of a second.
  7. I have not kept up with what you have said about your σ22 power supply does this mean that it now hums or that it hummed before and is now almost quite?
  8. Yes, consolidation seems to be the thing I would do looking at your stable of equipment. The Pico would be a great additional to your setup. Of course, if you were to keep the W1000 the Yamamoto should also be in your future. But the Pico seems like it would be the first best move to make from here even if you never got to the Yamamoto. This assumes that you still want portability first. Since you have the new iPod Classic you could think about the iTransport to feed a Yamamoto in the future as well or whatever you feel you need at that time. It all depends on what direction you want to take your setup; toward portability or fixed. I would also get something other than the optical feed from your desktop that uses a USB. If you are using a windows based computer the S/DPIF is not very good, it is always providing a 48 kHz over-sample no matter what as I understand it.
  9. I use either a Brickwall or the newer Zerosurge units. Check these out. For the power requirements of an headphone amp these are very good and provide some A/C conditioning. I use them on my HDTV surround setup and I could see blacker blacks or more contrast. Even my wife said this. BTW, the Zerosurge people are the OEM for the Brickwall people.
  10. Everyone should know that banks are only required to have about 4% of deposits on hand by regulations. Everything else can go toward credit for others to purchase homes and such. Back in the 80s, the S&L problem was that a concern that S&Ls were not on the same level as banks when they only had to have about 2.5%. So Congress past a regulation requiring them to have the same on hands as banks within 18 months. Well some worked to achieve this level of funds while some knowing the Government would jump in to bale them out did nothing, these were the "problem" S&L of the 80s. This is a simplistic explanation of the S&L thing in the 80s but today it is the issue with sub-prime loans. If the government changes a regulation slightly it has a huge impact on business.
  11. My personal take on my ESW9 is that it has a very good tonal character that I enjoy and I have enjoyed it from the beginning. The extension on the bass and high frequencies is also very good. It has some weaknesses but the overall character of this headphone for the music that listen too is much in line with the best of the Audio Technica headphones in my opinion and therefore it is probably a bargain for the price in the AT line of past and present AT headphones.
  12. I took my Lavry DA10 to SK138's home last fall and compared it to his 840c. On some tracks we heard no differences while on others the detail in the high frequencies was more clear with the 840c. They both were very smooth and musical to us using my Ultrasone Edition 9. Overall, the 840c being a transport and balance DAC is a bargain for the price. With me having the Lavry already I don't see the difference as being warranted to upgrade for me. BUT,,,if I had the 840c at home for a couple of weeks and then listened back to the Lavry the differences I heard may have been much more pronounced since it has been my experience that going up in quality is much harder to measure as a distinct difference compared with going back down in quality.
  13. I was surprise at the grade that it got on He&Bi. Four stars which is in good company. http://www.geocities.jp/ryumatsuba/ and here http://www.geocities.jp/mister_terch/CREATIVEAurvanaLive.html At that price point this may be a winner for them.

    Who is John Galt?
  15. I would not be doing anything else would I. Of course, I am kidding you.
  16. You know, you just tell it like you hear it...so when I say I have measured the tone at 30 with good volume and you don't hear the bass that is what you hear; nothing. I will never disagree with you that you don't hear it, but it certainty does set a bar as to what you do hear.
  17. I know I have heard at least a 120 Hz tone before...but I was using the AT-HA5000 to get it... No I tested it at 35 Hz with good volume. I could begin to note a fall off below 35 though, 30 was still good volume while with a 25 Hz tone I was not getting much.
  18. Linn Hi Rez promotion offer for master series tracks at half price here, just got the email a few minutes ago. http://www.linnrecords.com/linn-promotion.aspx#sampler

Yes this is what I was getting at. If failed again to communicate well.
  20. Just home from work and found this thread directed toward me by none other than Mr. Luvdunhill. I appreciate the recognition, but I think it is a bit misplaced since I am far more a fan-boy of all good headphones and equipment even the Stax. I just happen to own the Ultrasone Edition 9s at this time as Luv.. has so indicated. I have celebrated most of the equipment that I have had over the years and will continue to do so. And I will continue to limit myself to having a few items at a time and such is my way of doing things. I probably will continue to specifically celebrate those particular items I have when I have them. I find it interesting that some are so uncertain about what they have and enjoy that they need to degrade what others have to apparently make themselves feel a little better in their own insecurities but such is life.

Did you see how Obama made Hillary cry the other night. That was not nice. He should be taken to asked about that.... Why, Mr. Obama did you make Hillary cry?

Yea, I went back to work on Monday after about three weeks off during the holidays...
  23. The HA5000 is full time Class A amp. It pulls about 27-30 watts out of the wall. Efficiency being what it is gives you lots of watts out as heat...I guess about 25 watts into the small space. It is well ventilated with slots below and above the MOSFETs with big heat sinks.
  24. I wonder how this will compare with Headamp's Pico? I don't ask about the Predator since I don't think it compares, IMO.
  25. Wonder how this compares with the new Headamp Pico? I don't ask about the Predator since in my opinion it will not compare.
