I got my Stax SR-X MK3 with the DIY amp a couple of days ago and have been listening to it off and on. I am not sure how best to maximize the sound by using sources and all. On some tracks the sound is loud at about 8 o'clock and others it needs to go to about 11-12 before the music comes alive. The sound is very quite between notes with very little soundstage and with very little decay off the instruments like harps and acoustic guitars. On some tracks the sound is much better than others, probably a relationship to quality of the mixing and recording.

Does this mean I have 2 processors?
slwiser replied to Chekhonte's topic in GoRedwings19's Computer Help Hotline
Here is a story that I have for my dual core processor computer when I first got it. When I got my present Dell XPS 210 dual core processor computer the above screen is what I had with Task Manager. But the disk drive that I had was giving me imminent warnings of failure and I called Dell about this. They sent me a replacement drive but whether it was failing or not is still a question. When I installed the replacement drive and allowed the software system to install itself it did not recognize my dual core processor with the Task Manager. I went into the BIOS and it was calling it a multi-processor computer. I called Dell again. They could not believe that I knew enough about it to tell them something was wrong. I keep them on the phone about three hours talking with them working through various things until finally I went into my BIOS and told the system to set itself up for a single processor first then I rebooted twice to ensure that everything was working for a single core design processor. Then I went into the BIOS again and reset it to multi-processor and did the re-boot a couple of times and it re-set everything properly for a dual core computer. Apparently the replacement drive installation failed at the Windows installation level to recognize the dual processor while the BIOS told me that I have two cores as it actually has. A quad core would show four cores under that Task Manager window. -
Yes this is the latest of a long line of books in the series. This one may be somewhere around 12 or something?

So guys what is the word on the Stax SR-X MK3? It looks like I just got myself one from 003 that was Fitz's before him on an impulse. Will it even come close to my Ultrasone headphones?

So if the HFI-780 and D2000 are trashed, what's left?
slwiser replied to RedSky's topic in Headphones
I agree that you have had reasoned responses to hearing the Ultrasone headphones you have heard. My reference to the Ultrasone's being vilified are most directed toward those who don't seem to apply any reason to their dislike but sound much like they have never heard them in any context. Maybe they have and just failed to provide context but just to say they are terrible is not a reasoned response that I can appreciate with any understanding. -

I didn't think it needed fixing. But you did prove my point about vilification. -

Sorry you can't hear them out of a Yamamoto HA-02 amplifier. -

I understand and some people never get their ears around the S-Logic thing so for them it is a problem. -

My 780 is sounding great with the re-cable and internal modifications they have. They sound really good to me. So as far as I am concerned the 780 has not been trashed but vilified. -
Report it as a problem. i don't like it either.

I was mostly interested in what he was going to say about the iQube but after all the controversy it sort of went into the background and he said very little about it. The review of the Diablo and iQube was mostly about himself after everything was said and done. BTW, I got my iQube from Drew today and listening to it now with my UE Triple.Fi Pro 10.

Great post on Head-Fi: http://www.head-fi.org/forums/3956969-post44.html

Filbert, your response is to a fairly old post. Why bring up an issue with the DA10 now? and Filbert what do you expect from a source; i.e., "..case of "That's it? I don't get it." From my perspective of what a source is supposed to do that is a very good endorsement of the DA10. It gets out of the way and you should not hear it. I hear the music instead of the source. I conjecture that same may say the DA10 is not musical or it does not do something else but isn't "not being there" a source thing for a source? At least that was the stated goal of Dan Lavry to produce a product that is not there for all practical purposes, the proverbial straight wire. Apparently from your post he achieved his design goal and did it well. If I want to change the sound profile of my system then I would change the amp/tubes or EQ the sound at the end of the chair until then keep it as pure as possible, at least that is my personal goal.

The Triple.Fi is more sensitive to SS or Tube amplification. It seems they are turned for a very analytical signal which the ESW9 is less sensitive to its amplification. My Lavry DA10 makes the Triple.Fi sound better than my Yamamoto HA-02. But with regular headphones the Yamamoto HA-02 just out classes the Lavry DA10 headamp.
-
The triple.fi seems to have a little less midbass. The soundstage to me is bigger with the ESW9s and it does have fairly good image but not like the big boys of the AT world.
-
The ESW9 has a clearer mids and very nice highs. The triple.fi sounds warmer to me so some of the mids fall a little short of the ESW9. The bass of the triple.fi is a little bit better than the ESW9. It would depend on what sound you enjoy best to which you would like more. Out of the box the triple.fi is warmer and not as clear as the ESW9 while on busy bass tracks the ESW9 can seem to get muddy on you. I equate warmer to being not quite muddy but going in that direction.

Comfort, I have no issues with either the UE9 or 780.

Something that I found when attempting to answer some questions concerning the UE9 and 780. When ask about the ear cup opening sizes compared to my ears I found that my ear cups are smaller than my ears. My ears apparently fold into the ear cups. This has to change the way the sound is perceived if other's ears don't fold into them. It is like have my hands cupped over my ears allowing me to hear a little more distinctly. I wonder if this may have anything to do with the sound differences people are hearing?

I wish I had heard the 750s to see if they sounded like the 780s but I have not. But everything I read on the big Ultrasone thread said there was very little difference between the 2500 and the 750. If so, then there are major differences between the 750 and 780 but for sure I could not say. I did own the 2500.

This shows my simple setup that is almost the match to the one at my computer. Squeezebox 3 --> Lavry DA10 ---> Yamamoto HA-02 ---> ALO-HFI-780J I have an ALO-Auricap iMod docking station with my iMod behind the heapdhones. The Yamamoto HA-02 has a two input switch.

Welcome aboard....the people here don't know how to hold back any from my perspective. They will just tell it like they see/hear it. Enjoy a the breath of fresh air around here. Sometimes it feels more like a gale.
