As proposed, I started this thread for all to share your KGSSHV Carbon build experience and to exchange Q&A. This is a natural follow up thread to the Carbon Group Buy thread. Here are the version of Gerber files used for the boards in the group buy: kgsshvcarbonv5.zip (amp board) kgsshvpssicfetdual2new.zip (GoldenReference HV power supply, all-in-one version) kgsshvpssicfetsinglenewrightfat.zip (GoldenReference HV power supply, B+ and bias) kgsshvpssicfetsinglenewleftfat.zip ( GoldenReference HV power supply, B- and 7815/7915 based +/-15V regulator) goldenreference4.zip (GoldenReference LV bipolar power supply) goldenreference4plus.zip (GoldenReference LV V+ power supply goldenreference4minus.zip (GoldenReference LV V- power supply) bias.zip (stand alone regulated Pro and Normal bias supply) I (or others) will follow up with BOM. EDIT 10/8: Updated the BOM and Mouser project for the Carbon V5 to use Vishay RN60D 174K resistors for the two 175K positions. The correct part to use is Mouser part # 71-RN60D1743F. It's a mil-spec resistor that is actually 1/2W even though it's listed as 1/4W. The previously listed Xicon is 1/4W rated and not sufficient for these positions. EDIT 10/13: Updated the BOM and Mouser project for Carbon V5 to use 3M 961102-6404-AR for the servo jumpers. Note that the BOM does not match the shared Mouser project due to parts availability at Mouser. I apologize for the errors in project/BOM. EDIT 9/10: link to shared Mouser project for the GR HV Dual. Need to add 2 LT1021-10 and missing parts not available at Mouser. Please help check for errors. http://www.mouser.com/ProjectManager/ProjectDetail.aspx?AccessID=54687aa8fa EDIT 9/12: link to shared Mouser project for the GR LV Dual. Need to add 2 LT1021-10 and your choice of insulation kits to mount uninsulated sands. Please help check for errors http://www.mouser.com/ProjectManager/ProjectDetail.aspx?AccessID=b6d687c7f7 EDIT 9/20: link to shared Mouser project for the Carbon V5 (1 channel only). Please help check for errors. http://www.mouser.com/ProjectManager/ProjectDetail.aspx?AccessID=7F837B24AA EDIT 10/19: GR HV Dual BOM in spreadsheet. More complete than the shared Mouser project above. GR HV BOM_Oct19.xls EDIT10/11: GR LV Dual BOM in spreadsheet. More complete than the shared Mouser project above. GR LV BOM_Oct 11.xls EDIT 12/11: Carbon V5 BOM (1 channel) in spreadsheet, uses KOA Speer resistors. HV Carbon V5 BOM_Dec11.xls

Sent 12 packages out today. More will go out tomorrow. Still waiting for USPS to deliver the large padded envelopes I ordered so I can finish packing all the orders. The overseas shipping will be quite high due to the weight of the boards. Most will likely be around $26.50 US for USPS Priority Mail (up to 4 lb max weight). The only cheaper USPS fair is the First Class mail which only saves about $3 once the weight of the package goes above 24 oz. As a reference, 2 Carbon V5 plus 2 HV Single Fat boards weight in around 11oz.. It's a rotten deal for those outside of US - in some cases the shipping ends up costing almost as much as the boards. On to another matter - should we start a new dedicated thread for the KGSSHV Carbon build? If enough people think this is a good idea, I can start a new thread with some preliminary information including BOM for the V5 boards and GR HV PS. Speaking of which, I have not found a way to attach a spreadsheet - I know I was able to do that before the forum software was updated a few weeks ago. Thoughts?- 419 replies

A bit of good news following the disappointing news last; my wife was able to score a few of the USPS containers (large padded priority mail envelope) I have been expecting from a grocery store of all places today. The attached photo is some of the packages ready to be shipped. As you can see some of them are still awaiting their containers. The photo is out of focus on purpose to protect privacy- 419 replies

I am sorry I don't have good news on the USPS shipping. The two kinds of packing containers I ordered a week ago, one did not arrive this week (supposed to be 3 -5 business days, it has been 6 days now), the one arrived today was not what I ordered (wrong dimension). Went down to another post office and was told again that they too do not have those containers in stock. Very disappointing! I did pick up a few containers that's only good for domestic priority shipping and cannot accommodate the GR HV Dual PSU. It's also not padded like the one I ordered. I will start shipping domestic orders that do not include the GR HV Dual boards. I apologize again for this delay.- 419 replies

There will be a few days delay in shipping of boards. I apologize. Went down to the main USPS office Saturday morning to pick up packaging supply only to be told that they do not have any of the kind I need in stock and that I have to order them online. Placed the order last night and it says it will take 3 - 5 business days. Boards are sorted and ready to be packaged. The boards appear to be very good quality by visual inspection.- 419 replies

For my own benefit and possibly others, can someone confirm or correct the following: The regulated output voltage is: for V+: ((R8 + R7) / R7) x 10 (reference voltage of D5 - LT1021-10) for V-: ((R9 + R10) / R10) x 10 (reference voltage of D7 - LT1021-10) On the goldenreference4 board silkscreen, R7, R8, R9 R10 are all 1.5K. R7 and R8 are connected and R9 and R10 are connected. R8 and R9 are the 1.5K resistors closer to the DN2540 on each side of the board. Thanks!

There seems to be an intermittent issue when I try to respond to a PM. When I tap the "Reply to ..." link, instead of giving me a text box to type my reply, it asks me to attach a file. But this problem comes and goes. Also, any chance of bringing back the posting numbers? It's a useful feature when referring to information in postings. Thanks! -
Doh! Thanks! Don't know how I missed that one. Interest added to the spreadsheet.

Looks great Kerry! If there is a GB for this, I like to state my interest for an assembled board option like the last one Kerry ran.

Thanks all for your prompt responses and payments. I sent PCBnet all the latest version Gerber files yesterday for final confirmation of quotes. I will place the order soon as I receive the confirmation which I expect in a day or two. I will keep you posted.- 419 replies

Did you test them with load? These regulators are suppose to work properly under load. See some discussions on page 175 of this thread where Kerry and others came to my rescue with my problem. I had similar problem with the - regulator but not with the + regulator when I built my PSU. I thought the regulator was toasted too but once I tested it with load, it worked as spec'ed and has been working properly since.

Maybe this will be fixed once the background jobs are done running but the posting number is missing. This is an important feature to me especially for those threads with large number of postings. -

Here is the updated GB detail sheet with the new quotes on the GR LV Single and Bias boards. I like to now start collecting payments from all. Please send your payment to my PayPal account ( [email protected] ) by end of Tuesday, Aug. 11. I'll place our order with PCBnet when I receive all payments. Here is the logistics: For participants with US domestic shipping address: 1. include your HeadCase ID and shipping address in the note of your PayPal payment 2. add $6.1 US to your total listed, the $6.1 will cover the USPS flat rate priority mail shipping from me to you. For non-US shipping address: 1. include your HeadCase ID and shipping address in the note of your PayPal payment 2. I will PM you your shipping charge when I receive the boards from PCBnet. Actual shipping charge will need to be determined based on the actual weight of your boards and your shipping address. If you prefer not to use PayPal Gift, please include in your payment the applicable PayPal fee. This fee varies from country to country, you'll need to look it up at PayPal’s web site. Please let me know if I missed something.- 419 replies

No experience with Stax Quattro. Last time I had some major sticking/opening drawer issue with Wadia transport it turned out to be aging rubber belts in the drawer mechanism needed to be replaced. Given the age of these players that's where I would look first (if belt(s) is used). For ransom tracking issues I usually make sure there was no dust or other contamination on the laser lens first. I did have to replace a laser assembly once due to aging as well.

I have asked for new quotes for the GR LV Single and Bias boards with sorenb dropping his order for these boards as his order accounted for large percentage of the quantities (30% and 42% respectively). I will update the sheet when I receive the quotes.- 419 replies

I received official quote from PCBnet for 2mm, 3oz copper HV PS boards. The end cost difference is quite reasonable ($1 for the Dual and $0.5 for the Fat, see details in the spreadsheet). I have updated the spreadsheet with this change. I am also proposing that we drop the HV Single Skinny board option altogether. Except for DonnyHiFi and chiguy, all others have decided to switch over to either the Dual or the Fat HV PS. I took the liberty to switch DonnyHiFi and chiguy’s options to the Fat boards. Please let me know if you have objections. I have also updated quantities based on PMs and postings in the last few days. I now consider the quantities final. Please review and let me know if I missed something. By end of this weekend I will post logistics of how I will collect the payments from all and proceed to place our order with PCBnet. Thanks all for your patience. EDIT 8/6: removed GB detail sheet to avoid confusion. See the most current sheet a few posts down.- 419 replies

Thanks for the consideration. My real concern is the board cost - at the already small quantity of the skinny boards, further decrease in the quantity will no doubt have significant impact to the cost. I don't remember if I traced the HV Single Skinny boards but I did trace the HV Single Fat boards.- 419 replies
