Ok I've been playing music carts this weekend with the Origin Live Sovereign and wow each are great in their own way. First off the OL is superb sounding if not completely an off their rocker design. Until you get some time with it it scares the shit out of you. The sub chassis intentionally has play in it so when you lift the arm you can sort of wiggle the sub chassis back and forth if you are not careful. Since trying the Mint LP alignment tool I can understand using these sight line devices for anything other than roughing in a cart to a 2 MM variance if you are lucky. I have a Mint on order but he ships once a month as they ship June 17th. If you don't have one of these they are great. Set up takes a while and you will strain your eyes and get fatigued as you are doing the same thing a dozen times while hovering over a $1000 cart (for the most part). Carts that I have played with so far, bearing in mind perfect alignment was not achieved as I only have the TT basics tool atm. Denon DL-S1 WOW if you like to rock the fuck out this is your man. Dynamics, leadig edge attack in spades, fabulous bass slamm and it digs deep. OTOH their is a slight harndness or leanness to the mids that while not a deal killer for rock does hamper small combo jazz reproduction. Shelter 501 Soundsmith retip, at first it sounded dull and lifeless with a rubbery tone. After playing around with the alignment it settled in, great mids and sweet highs but lacks the bass slamm of the Denon. It also struggled on a few super dymanic passages. I am chaking this up to set up issues. Soundsmith SMMC1, set up way out it is spitty and harsh. I immediately put this cart on A-gon but today I pulled it out and played with the alignment a bit and wow very good. Very revealing and a good tracker this cart is a detail monster. I am convinced it is still out by a 1-2 mm margin at least but much better and may be a keeper. It lacks viseeral bass, its there but something is missing that I can't place. anyway I can't wait to get the Mint LP set up tool later this month and reput these through their paces. I'll add the zyx to the mix at that point. I gotta sell at least two of these carts to free up some cash but can't bring myself to do so until I hear them all dialed in.

Yikes!!!!!!! today is the day I need to start packing rigs for the journey to Chicago. 2 or 3 amps, a dac, two pair of headphones, a couple of hard drives, Ipad, a radar detector and a bottle of aspirin. I also may tow with me my water boiler for tea and coffee, for pre noon beverages

I am getting in eary on Thursday and will be driving should I stop off at a beer store on my way to the Hyatt? I can not afford to float the beer but if people want to take up a collection I can bring a cooler or two from last year for use for the Thursday night meet up.

Ok so Tyll and I have heard it anyone else?? -
Last year Mike and I took a ride to a beer distributor Friday afternoon and filled my car with beer (ok maybe a few too many stouts for summer in SoCal). The night of the pizza party at the pool was done with the beer from that trip and the pizza was paid for by Andy, donations and we covered the gap. I'm sure Jim, Ryan, Kevin and crew will show us the hospitality that the Midwest is famous for. Just be willing to lend a hand for a few hours as herding a few hundred canjam noobs and catering to vendor needs is a big task.

X2 can't wait to see the JH crew at Can Jam

Dan any thoughts on the live recording situation? We can room mic, close mic or potentially mix the two?
-
boys T-minus 7 days and very excited but could there really only be a dozen member rigs at this thing, that' kinda fucked up? Have the locals just not shown the interest in bringing gear? Right now it's me and Kevin in the High End room, that can't be right. Also for those attending we'll be recording the Arnopol Trio with the help of Shure ( Matt is hooking us up with mics). Not sure how it will all turn out as my plan was to do a basic two mic set up but we may go deeper as there are 8 channels on the Sonic Studio. There will be a download available about a week after the event at 24/96 of all or part of the show.

Tom I have owned two retips and I own the SMMC1, they are wonderful. How it works is frustrating though as you pay your money and wait a few months but you get a great and competitively priced retip/new cantilever. I'd strongly recommend the $350 TOTL version.

Thanks for the heads up although my wallet curses you, see you in Chi-Town

it is a really nice portable amp/dac solution, I had the chance to hear t at RMAF and while after 8 months I could not point to any one impression overall I recall liking it -

here is what the deck is sounding like, It is a very rough set up and I need to isolate the table with a wall mount as I have to tippy toe away from the deck to keep the cart from dancing across the LP. Some a the better dynamics with out cart overload though Description: OL sample You can use the following link to retrieve your file: Download OL Sample.aif from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way

well I just set up the Origin Live Deck the Stretch sold me and all I can say is holy thunderous bass batman. Needs some fine tuning that will likely take a month while waiting for a mint protractor. The soundstage is not as defined as I recall the DD decks had but the tone, detail and attack is a nice step up. Right now I do not have the anti skate set up and I cant hear any ill effect from it but I'll give that a go tomorrow.

While I love Todd I'm not a huge fan of that phono pre amp. At $829 I scour A-gon for a good used pre I've always wanted one of these Eastern Electric Mini Max Phono For Sale | AudiogoN

Have you not read the Sony XA-54--ES thread where burn in was noted through am 1150 hour period with performance ranging from the sublime to terrible essentially changing radically every 48 hours
