Is it? I have that CD around here somewhere, I'll have to give it a listen on the K1000 sometime. I remember it being mastered pretty warm and thick sounding, and not liking it too much on my (already warm and thick sounding) Sextetts.

Well after using the DV-980H for a few days I can definitely say I'm pretty happy with it. It took a bit of playing with different resolutions and video settings on both the player and the TV, but now everything is looking a lot better than my old Denon. It is a bit revealing of faults in the source video, but anything with at least a semi-decent transfer and isn't overly compressed looks great. It also has a gamma adjustment that the DV-981HD didn't have, which is immensely useful since the Panasonic's gamma curve is slightly off and non-adjustable.

Yeah, it never really impressed me at meets, but when I bought a pair for "extended audition" (honestly, I got it cheap enough that reselling was no problem) I realized the reason they sound so good is they don't do anything to wow or impress you and do a great job getting the hell out of the way. I'm interested to see what you've come up with for those speakers. I'm looking at getting some planar speakers myself to try something different than box speakers for once.

Doesn't it though? Sometimes I still want to grab for a particular AKG that I no longer have (usually the K290), but overall I'm quite satisfied choosing between just 3 headphones. I'm still a bit surprised how much the K1000 has won you over, considering its differences from the sonic signature you've seemed to always like before, but I didn't expect to like it as much as I did either.

That certainly is true. The Head-Case Welcoming Party also does a good job keeping the riff-raff out when they happen to stumble upon the site (although I did manage to slip in).

Yep, you were right, although she joined in on a few other songs, it was mostly for talking between songs. I think there was probably a good 20-30 minutes worth of time spent introducing the singers and musicians over the course of the show, complete with ass-buttering praise (how many times can you say "sugoku" in one minute ) and humorous/embarassing stories about everybody. I loved the bit when Kajiura and the violinist teased one of the girls real good about her playing "The World" on violin... she looked like she was gonna die (I think it was Keiko but I'm really not sure at this point). The concert was all I expected and more, you gotta check it out. Some of the songs had to have some noticable changes to fit the live arrangement, but creates some interesting new takes on things (the opening violin part of Canta Per Me was done by the bassist instead of the violinist, for example). Kaori and Keiko are the ones who really stole the show though... at some points I thought they might throw the other two off the stage just to have more room to rock out. They more than made up for Yuuka's absence. Right now this is my favorite concert DVD, but Ali Project is releasing a new one in January that might be a contender (the one they already released this year was a strings concert, which was certainly very good, but that's not the main reason anybody listens to Ali Project).

I haven't watched the concert yet, but I know she joins in on Zodiacal Sign at least since I've seen that part already. I would expect on at least a few other songs... it'd seem silly to have that mic in her face all the time only for one song (which doesn't even have real lyrics).

Supposedly the 981 has a better picture than the 980, but the flaws in the Faroudja video processor make most stuff completely unwatchable on my TV. From what I've read the issue is visible on DLPs and some plasmas, but Oppo's stance is that it only affects DLPs and that it doesn't affect any flat panel displays at all. Got the DVD today (estimated delivery on January 6th, so Fedex showed up early this morning with it?! they must've fucking teleported it here or something). I'm kinda mad that Yuuka wasn't in the concert too, but it's not as if there's any shortage of good vocals between Kaori, Keiko, Wakana, Yuriko Kaida, Eri Ito, and Kajiura herself. :prettyprincess:

It depends on the kind of music, but I generally use them either nearly fully extended (unamped / acoustic) or what I think is about a third of the way out (amped / studio). I adjust them by feel with them on my head, so I'm not really sure on the exact positioning.

Blargh, lucky bastard, it took me for-feckin-ever to find the two positions where I got great soundstage out of them. Anywhere else and it did weird things with the center of the soundstage for me. And the K1000 is definitely not sterile sounding... maybe if you play some dull music that has no soul to it then they'll sound that way, but not normally.

Oppo DV-980H, which shouldn't have the same macroblocking error as the DV-981HD. I also ordered Yuki Kajiura's just released first live DVD, and also preordered the Ali Project DVD that's to be released in January. I'm going to drive myself insane constantly checking the online tracking... the segments I've previewed on youtube make it look to be an amazing performance.

Oppo DV-981HD upconverting DVD player. Most likely going to sell it right away... the macroblock enhancement is absolutely atrocious when it's set anywhere above 480p. My old Denon DVD-1720 at 480i looks better than the Oppo at 1080p.
