  1. I don't know what part of a BMC signal you consider pretty analog... sure looks like square waves of only two different widths to me.
  2. Yeah, that doesn't sound very promising, especially considering he told Tom he was gonna love what he got too.
  3. I have the MG 1.6 so I can only base my impressions on it and what I've read of the MMGs, but if the MMG is even half as good then $380 is a really nice deal for them and I'd grab them right away. Howzat? The impedance only drops a little below 4 ohms in the treble, for most of the bandwidth it's 4-5 ohms; an amp that can drive a 4 ohm load should handle them fine.
  4. Found where I put that bigass sheet of eggcrate foam, and cut out a couple 3'x3' pieces to stick on the wall behind my new speakers.
  5. It's more like a shoulder brace.
  6. Sure, if you wanna buy me some MMGs.
  7. If you'd seen a rescreened pair, you'd know. The stock screens are hard plastic ear-graters, while rescreened ones use some manner of thin, soft cloth.
  8. Is that a request?
  9. It's actually kinda funny how well they're working, since this room has had major problems with nearly any cone speakers I've used, requiring the Behringer DEQ2496 to get acceptable sound quality without really weird speaker and listening position. I'm driving them with my Panasonic SA-XR57, a class D amp. I'd read ahead of time that other people have used similar Panasonic's (XR55) with Maggies with great results. I need to make a second set of speaker cables so I can turn on the bi-amp function, and get even more power out of the amp. I'm using the dual amp mode now, which combines two of its amp sections for each speaker, and the bi-amp mode will allow me to use another amp section separately for each tweeter. It may be a surround receiver, but it's designed to work all its power into a 2-channel setup just as easily. Hahahah, thanks. At the money I was looking to spend it came down to either the MMGs with a relatively inexpensive sub, or the 1.6QRs without a sub. I was all set to go with the MMGs after I realized what a hassle it would be to try to get 1.6QRs shipped when I found these for sale locally.
  10. He decided to stay late to listen to them (he uses the store as his listening room, and has a bunch of speakers stored there he can swap in and out, lucky bastard), so long story short I bought me some new speakers. I can definitely vouch for how good they sound, and if the MMGs sound even half as good as these then they'd definitely be very much worth it. For a comparison more people here will be able to follow, they kind of remind me a bit of a more forgiving version of the K1000, with less treble and more bass. It's been too long since I've listened to any planar headphones to compare to them, unfortunately.
  11. So damn picky. I was planning to replace them with black socks, but the white ones really do look a lot better in person as I've heard people say. The first thing I noticed when I first listened to them both at the seller's place and here, is that there is no shortage of bass at all. I still need to play with placement to get better imaging (it was creepy real at his place, but he had it in a commercial building with high ceilings and no rear wall against them), but it's doing amazingly well with everything else I've tested. I haven't dug out my some of my worst recordings for female vocals yet, but there's no sign of bite or harshness with what I've tested so far. I'm actually going to need to see if I can squeeze out a little more upper treble when I adjust their positioning. Midrange is very prominant, if a bit thick and lush, which is just how I like it. Bass, as already mentioned, is really fucking good. It won't shake the walls like a subwoofer, but for music it goes deeper than I expected, and things like big drums sound way better even without the same impact (you can clearly hear the decay of the drumhead, rather than just a long blurred noise). I even tested the re-recorded version of Yuki Kajiura's "Salva Nos" which has a deep bassline that I was absolutely certain it would fall short on, but I think I heard the speakers actually scoff at me right before it kicked in at full power. Very, very, very satisfied with these so far. Maybe I'm just lucky with my music and the room shape, because they have everything positive I've read about them, without the negative traits some people mentioned (aside from the rolled-off upper treble).
  12. I'm listening to them right now.
  13. Magnepan MG 1.6QR I think I need to change my underwear now... speakers that sound amazing in my acoustically awful room without any equalization.
  14. Hahah, I'd just as soon carry them home if the area wasn't what it was, but I've got a stationwagon I can use if I get all the work supplies and such cleaned out of the back, and I found out the guy has a pickup truck himself, but I'm going to go by in the afternoon sometime this week so that there's a little more time to check things out and demo them. I just can't get over the fact that I drive by that place all the time without knowing there was something like this sitting there right under my nose.
  15. Well Maggies are planar, but not electrostatic, but in a how fucking small is this world moment, he tells me he has them (and other speakers) stored at his furniture store that's literally right around the corner from me. If only I had something I could transport them in tonight I'd already be on my way over there.
  16. Right now I'm just waiting to hear back when a good time to drop by his place is.
  17. Yeah, that's the price with the stands. I thought it was a pretty good deal based on what I was seeing on the 'gon, but it's always good to have a sanity check from someone else.
  18. There's a guy in my local area with a pair of 1.6QRs for $950 that come with the Sound Anchor stands ($340 new), second owner who bought them locally (never shipped). As far as I can tell this is a pretty good deal, right?
  19. Fail.
  20. Now I'm considering a pair of 1.6QRs instead of the MMGs.
  21. Lag bolts in particleboard... heh.
  22. That's my understanding of the main supposed difference... the 981HD better for video, and the 980H better for audio. I'm not gonna complain that I get better video out of the 980H though. I haven't used the USB input on it, didn't even realize it had one. Same for scratched discs; I'm not sure how it handles them as I try to keep mine in pretty good shape.
  23. WTF are you doing here then?
  24. We use wood headphone stands 'round these parts, ya hear?
