It does, but it flat-out farks the rest of the crew, farks them right up the tubes. that said I'm all for them getting a bigger cut - the creative chunk should be respected more.

I've been loving my dt-250's at the office (and growing to despise the dt-990's treble. It's all hunky-dory until you get a bad recording. yikes), and while moving some boxes around at home I found my old Koss A-250 headphones from circa 2000. The headband clip for the right phone is finicky and the leatherette cups are starting to peel, but they really do have a sweet midrange (if not as warm as I prefer, see the beyer dt-250's). Their bass sort of sucks imho though - I have to boost them quite a bit to get a natural sounding bass quantity. A quick search or two reveals they were a FOTM a while back on HF, but I was too busy futzing with Stata to read about headphones at the time. so, I have the A-250's with boosted bass, or the dt990's with reduced treble - either way I'm futzing with eq which I suppose is an alternative, but I'd perfer to leave it flat so I stop farking around with it. I'm still eagerly awaiting the k601's, which -may- sound like what I'm looking for, but in the event they aren't, can anyone recommend an alternative mid-fi open phone? Home rig is Mac->0404->GLite, and more than $200 is not really feasible (okay, $250). I 'spose I could just pick up a 250 ohm DT-250 for home use, but that seems, well, pedestrian given I have an 80 ohm pair already I seem to have a low tolerance for boosted treble - am I destined for some Sennheisers? My local friends are going to start calling me a headphone pimp if I unload anymore of my cast-offs on them...

Past writers strikes have been bad. Shows get canceled, line industry workers go months without pay, and jobs/contracts dry up. There may be a resulting hike in the percentage of big-ticket movies that writers get, but the bulk of em probably won't see much improvement. Talks set to resume on nov. 26th: http://media.www.nyunews.com/media/storage/paper869/news/2007/11/19/CitystateNews/Talks.Restart.In.Writers.Strike-3109378.shtml I'm not saying the writers are wrong to strike, but the resulting damage still makes it a pretty shitty move.

damn strikes. It's a rough business, and if it doesn't fit into the beancounters Grand Designs to finish a show, they won't. (See: Deadwood). Bastards.

A problem easily solved by not buying people gifts. A smattering of gift certificates and a few bottles of EWSB and bam, [annoying holiday period]1 is dealt with. ------------------ 1: Insert least-hated mid-late December religious holiday here.

Wait, he had other "real" businesses running off the same machine? An still no proper backups? What is this, 1995?
-
Well, unless you can alter time, speed up the harvest, or fix head-fi, it will only get worse
-
At 110 million units world-wide, that could soon mean almost anyone interested in music.
-
One can only expect that to increase at an even faster rate the longer HF stays down, especially what with the kids getting their xmass mommy-buy-me money and whatnot.

supposedly cats hate citrus, so some citrus spray or candles may help. They're most likely marking territory, so unless you get an animal of your own it will be pretty hard to get them to stop. Maybe hooks in the balcony ceiling to hang the chairs from?

Or Aussie, or etc. I wonder what it's like to be able to peg someone's social class by their accent. I bet it results in some real narrow thinking. Sort of like how people in the US react to someone with a southern accent, but worse.

How long 'til the 'fi is operating normally again?
ph0rk replied to Iron_Dreamer's topic in Off Topic
Telling, in a way. I am still amazed there weren't at the -least- on-site tape backups. How much does a tape robot cost these days? $3k? Don't back up images - done. C'mon! RAID is not a backup, even if you have a mirrored 5 array with a spare parity disk per array. Controllers fail or several well-placed drives go and bam. RAID arrays are for availability not real backups. I avoided slamming HF for the outage until now, but a week is just awful. But then, head-fi didn't have strikethrough, so it was clearly an inferior installation. -
I think it is definitely getting to the point where it would have been better off just to get it up with the old 2006 data a week ago.

So, I've had these for a bit now, say 5 days. Those that used to lurk at H-F will probably know I detested disliked the K701's and managed to swap them for some dt-990-250's (2005) through some FS forum and ebay kung-fu. Currently using PowerMac (toslink or usb) -> 0404 usb (1/4" to old monster studiolink RCA) -> Glite w/ elpac -> dt-990's. I'm sure arguments could be made about the quality of my rig, but given budget constraints (and the roving eyes of the woman - thankfully the glite is tiny and the 0404 USB gets used for recording too), I think it is pretty damn decent. Definately approaching the elbow in the price/performance diminishing returns curve - which is where I want to be. The inflammable part: I can't imagine tolerating much less bass quantity than this. -Especially- on older recordings. Though even with newer recordings (NIN year zero, for example), it seems close to just right. Lacks a bit in the deep bass range (30-50hz), but they're open phones and them's the breaks. I want to be able to hear the bass part of Steve Harris' basslines, not just the slap of the strings against the fretboard. I can hear that with the present setup without it being overpowering. Tracks like the cure's "the holy hour" are similarly just about right, can hear the bassline (and the bass flange) clearly, and the sporadic harder attacks are clean. I guess I'd say these cans are bright with bright recordings and thumpy or dark with thumpy or dark recordings. With stuff like the dorati arrangement of the 1812 overture there's just enough sizzle and sting from the trumpets and the cannon, well, sound great, but at all overly bassy. I suppose some if it may be the Glite's sound signature, I don't have many other phones to try it with though (I have some loaner k601's on the way to see if I dislike them as much as the k701, my DT-770's which sound plenty beefy out of the 0404's headphone out, I may try my old toss-around senn hd-590's). The 770's are fun, but obviously I didn't think they were the perfect can for every job, or I wouldn't have been looking for higher-end open cans to begin with. If the comparisons between 990's and 880's I've read are even half true... how can anyone tolerate that (small) quantity of bass in the 880's? How much (or how little) bass are people expecting to hear? Disclaimer: everyones ears are different and have differing levels of damage, etc. I play electric bass but never with a live drummer (go electronic music) and always with earplugs, I've always been very careful with my ears due to a partially deaf relative who used to blare too much opera. I also usually listen very quietly - I have to be able to hear myself drumming fingers lightly on my desktop for example, and can hear mouse clicks and key clicks clearly when listening.

Another Tea Party fan. I like using "Pulse" and "Temptation", as well as propellorhead's "bigger?" and portishead's "wandering star" for bass happiness before switching to something like the white stripes for head-bopping happiness. "cath hell blues" and "Seven nation army" work great. I've also used juno reactor's "insects" for the deep low bass sweep and deep bass pulse. I guess I switch it up often though, as I hate to wear out a song.

The install is customizable. the dvd player isn't part of the software bundle though, its part of the OS. If the previous owner deleted it, I'd seriously consider a complete wipe and reinstall - they don't seem to know what they were doing.

OSX GUISE: Do you compulsively quit the finder?
ph0rk replied to hYdrociTy's topic in GoRedwings19's Computer Help Hotline
While i am in favor of using things like quicksilver (especially with the stacks/hierarchical folders debacle) trying to keep the finder from loading is sort of extreme. the bad kind of extreme. -
au?di?o?phile /ˈɔdiəˌfaɪl/ ?noun a person who is especially interested in high-fidelity sound reproduction. high fidelity n. The electronic reproduction of sound, especially from broadcast or recorded sources, with minimal distortion. high fidelity ?noun Electronics. sound reproduction over the full range of audible frequencies with very little distortion of the original signal. I see nothing in particular that precludes a favored EQ signature in those definitions. One man's "true to life" is quite possibly another man's audiocrap. Of course, it could just be that I've dealt with enough drunk/stoned/deaf sound men to no longer hold live music on the audiophile pedestal.

Frankly, I think it takes a twisted kind of logic to argue that the ability to take over a hundred hours worth of music with you is in any way "bad" or a regression. Sure, an ipod isn't the pinnacle of fidelity, but it's portable! Imho there are more options for high fidelity listening now, not less.
-
I suppose a digital multi-band EQ is out of the question? (As I understand it, there are quite a few that will perform all the EQ-ing in the digital domain, between source and DAC) I understand an aversion to EQ though, I prefer to avoid it myself if I can.

Bleeding out onto other forums and methods of maintaining the network ties. It shows the community has some resilience beyond the bounds of HF itself as a website - I don't think I've been a part of a community that has sustained this sort of downtime that didn't already have an IRC channel or the like. Of course, the existence of a splinter group alternative source of information like head-case is interesting in and of itself.
-
Hooray for me! Though I caved and bought Nick's Gilmore Lite, don't tell anyone! To talk business for a moment, I can't help but be fascinated at how the community is reacting to the strain of the HF outage. Well a subset of the community, anyway.

Just a minor nag, but saved feedback probably won't have the same legitimacy as the real thing, as it is too easily manufactured. A shame.

I can't tell if you're being kind or if this is a very clever flame. Clearly, I need another glass. Everyone knows alcohol makes you invulnerable. That's not the same "in" as in inflammable!

Just finished re-watching the 9th gate. yeah, yeah. cheesy, but it's polanski.
