  1. I really don't think we're done discussing the sheer stupidity that new tubes somehow "break" the amp. That is up there on the stupid scale with burn in and the cable mania. Based on actual measurements the new small signal tubes are often an order of magnitude better than the true NOS stuff. Let's not get into the ebay garbage either where you have no way to know in what state the tubes truly are. With power tubes things are not as clear as they are naturally built down to a price compared to something built in the 50's. Still the good new stuff isn't bad by any means.
  2. Yup.
  3. The problem with the Lambda has never been the drivers but the housing. We'll see if they ever change that...
  4. I really don't see any other reason why the transformer would suddenly start to misbehave unless it is simply failing. I take it is set to the correct voltage and not say a 100V unit plugged into 117V or something like that? Polarity of the mains can also be a factor if the plug is reversible.
  5. Did you add any new stuff to that mains wiring? Computers, chargers, that type of thing? They could be causing the hum.
  6. I just use teflon tubing that I cut to length using my automatic wire stripper. I only do it for power resistors though.
  7. The AC in your house could be causing that or the transformer just has a bit of hum. Some do, some don't.
  8. It didn't have plug in cards but there were PCB's on all four walls of the chassis plus the batteries were located in tall heatsinked modules that stood off from the main PCB.
  9. I do it much the same way. By hand with a power drill with good speed control and a low torque setting. I do snap one every now and then but then again... I do a lot of this.
  10. I always do my tapping with a cordless drill. Those chassis do look awesome. Great work.
  11. Makes me start chanting "one of us! one of us! one of us!!!" The current 007Mk2 with just the ports plugged (the springs still being stock with the earpads in the "Mk2 position") is the best 007 I've ever owned and thus the best headphones there are for me. They are pretty much a more engaging version of the Mk1 with even better bass performance and detail retrieval. Color me very impressed...
  12. The SR-Omega does a lot of things right but I'd be hesitant to call them more neutral, mostly due to the bass as it gets so out of control when you push them. Still great though...
  13. It seems that Bob and I share a taste in headphones. If that is an early set then I get his reaction, the modified 007 is just a far better transducer. This is especially true if you tend to listen at higher volume levels, that's where the 009 falls apart and the 007 just craves more power. The amp also can't be blamed here as the KGSS is on the warmer side of the spectrum. Me thinks Bob and Tyll could use a loaner amp to try out. Either a KGSSHV mini or a Carbon. The special KGSS Tyll has is great but both the HV and especially the Carbon just step it up a notch. The detail retrieval the Carbon can muster is just absurd...
  14. I might have a picture in some of the archives but I'm not going to search for it. Can't even remember when I had that one.
  15. The actual Stax schematic is in the link I posted.
  16. Hell yeah, I'm famous... Btw. Congrats Tyll on the proper pronunciation of Yggdrasil...
  17. There was a SRD-7 Pro SB too but it is dead simple to do this.
  18. Yeah, there is a BH or two coming.
  19. The 10M90 is an IC so they are far from all being identical. That's why I test them before they go in the circuit.
  20. This is Stax so one never knows but I've never seen a SRA-10S unit that wasn't 100V only. You would have to have a custom transformer made.
  21. The SRA-10S and SRA-12S are identical so this applies: If it indeed a SRA-10S then it is 100V only (that is the reason for the model distinction) so don't run it off 117V like that.
  22. First mini Carbon up and running. I also built an identical full size one so I can see of the proximity of the PSU/AMP sections has any effect. Two more coming including one with an R-core.
  23. Not sure sure, there were no specs with these. They are 3 times the size of the KGSSHV mini sinks though...
  24. Nobody here would be stupid enough to touch a Woo Wee. We don't think it is a good feature to have an adapter destroy our headphones.
  25. Those heatsinks are at least 50% too small for the carbon so it would be a good idea to reduce the current a bit. My mini Carbons should be ready in a day or two. Massive heatsinks to soak up all the power.
