It's all about the previously owned cables.... Interesting that he just opened up a new HF "thing" for that Wells Audio abomination. Who wants to guess that he got a nice discount from them?
-
Here's something that has been cooking for a while... what happens when you take some heavily tweaked SR-X Mk3 normal bias drivers, an old SR-303 cable, some earpads from Belarus and a cheap Beyer clone from China? Something that is actually pretty decent... Now the drivers are actually Pro bias if that wasn't clear but this one fun sounding set of headphones. Off the Carbon CC it has that lovely tuneful bass the SR-X Mk3 Pro has but this one has far more body to it. The voices are sublime and have that SR-X quality to them without the over damped nature of the originals. The highs a tad too lively but that will be tweaked in version 2.0. Over all...I'm a happy bunny for spending next to nothing one these... It's fun to play with this stuff and see what comes of it.

So true. Anybody remember the WES vs. BHSE comparative review which was written by two people, one did one and and no actual comparison made and what they wrote makes no sense what so ever...
-
I will never post on HF again so that is a non option. He did get back to me and said I was totally wrong to just "expect" a glowing review. He does really suck at the whole shilling thing...
-
Every now and then I receive emails where people want free review samples or some stupid shit like that. Now then this gem showed up today: I just like the blatant offer to offer promotion and clearly a glowing review for a measly 45% discount... My reply is below... Kevin told me not to be too harsh... I think it went ok.

So he's sending me something... He'll get that joke...

Well they are just about never used so it's never really an issue. I'm working on installing a PC there so I can stream to that system and the other system in the living room so it's something to work on.

It's actually ódýrt rusl but close enough...
-
Last I heard they dropped that stupidity but I seriously doubt those connectors they use on the housings are rated at 1000V...
-
They are but the thick mats are in place on the back of the drivers so they help. They are about as far into the room as I dare (roughly 1m) before I might be susceptible to some spousal abuse...

In our ongoing quest to buy random shit to try out, Kevin bought a Jotunheim as he was interested in the circuitry. He thought they might have done something novel... but it is utterly mediocre as one has come to expect these days. One interesting bit is the horrible assembly quality (hello hand soldering at minimum wage) and dubious parts such as no name switches... which arrived broken. Now this is a budget piece so corners have to be cut but not cleaning off the flux is just sloppy. sj.pdf For me the biggest letdown with all of this is the major disservice Schiit and others are doing to the community. They are toting these frankly "shit" amps as power houses (well they are) as if this power mattered at all. 2.5W or what ever is of no use in a headphone amp unless it is some really clean Class A power. 25mA bias at +/-12V isn't that so they have the noobs and experienced users alike again focusing on the power output when it is a meaningless figure.

Yeah...Thoranna just had to have that one on Staten Island after the first ferry trip... Btw. The black pile next to the statue are the custom Quad covers I had made in Russia. Nicely made and fit perfectly over the speakers to block out the sunlight should it get through the curtains...
-
True!! I do like their stator design and if they can manufacture them with solid quality control and in a clean room, they could be pretty good. It would also make other manufacturers look at 'stats as a market they'd be willing to get into.
-
Hehe yeah, long live stark nordic styling... Not sure who came up with these but a guy in Holland was installing these on his rebuilds and I liked the look. It's also a good idea to raise any Quad's off the ground so why not.

There are so many things wrong with that board that it isn't even funny. Also remove the KGSSHV-Carbon name off the board as this isn't something we want associated with our design.
-
I'll buy one as soon as it is released but I find it kinda funny how far the price has crept up. They were supposed to be well under 2k$ but now they hope they will be less than 3k$...

I finally got the Spider legs for my ESL57's and after some boiled linseed oil and lacquer, they were installed yesterday: It has changed the sound quite a bit but it mostly makes them easier to live with such as cleaning underneath them and stuff like that. The panels are 49 years old at this point so the SQ is suspect but they play amazingly well for their age. Perfect balance with no noise or arcing at all. Next step will be to replace the panels, paint them and have the covers re-anodized black.

It's funny how much easier it is for us to understand the weird dialects of the UK compared to American's...

Madrigal did this back in the day and charges some obscene amount to alter the older products for use in other areas. Well they didn't do this for decades so as soon as ordering from Japan has become easy as pie...they do this. Of course we should be pissed off as it means cheaper amps are now much harder to source. A modded 727 was always a good starter amp so now the used ones with a proper transformer will be come scarce. I did think that the Innerfidelity measurements were off. The SR-1 almost certainly and the 4070 sounds a lot like the one fitted with 507 drivers I had which sounded terrible...
-
I have a set of these sitting at KG's house and I played with them for a bit. Not bad but the damped ortho sound really isn't for me so I'm probably going to sell them.

Lower capacitance will always help, making the whole system easier to drive. That said, the older cloth cables were mated to drivers with far lower capacitance so they would be about par with the modern stuff. Still it wouldn't hurt to use a lower capacitance cable. Going the whole HE-1 route though is just idiotic. Cramming class A/B drivers (at best) into the capsules and instead carry a pile of signal into the phones is a pretty crappy compromise. Reeks of the usual Sennheiser "we did something cool but utterly stupid (HE90 glass stators)" which they are kinda known for...
-
Might have shipped like that. 20V balance is nothing to loose sleep over.
-
No cheap amps from Japan for anybody. I just don't get this shit in this day and age...
-
As if we needed a reason not to buy a new Stax amp...I was just sent this pic: So they are down to a single 100V primary on the new amps. This is from a 007tA but it uses the same transformer as the 727 so it will be identical.

I don't think there ever was one like that (the SRD-X did use a 1/4" plug though) and you can see the label for the input wiring on the back so this is a mod.
