  1. I have looked at them but the have one bit problem... all the transformers have a single 117v primary. While I could fit a step down inside the case it's just too much trouble. They are very good for sensitive speakers but since my tastes are more planar orientated I need a lot of goos stable tube power.
  2. Transformer coupled 300b's at a sane price are something to look into.
  3. It's a real shame but I think that the monos use a ECC99...
  4. It's his design about as much as the RSA amps are designed by Ray. It's also a very simple amp to build and my only issue is to cram the KGSS psu inside the chassis and the large caps associated with it.
  5. Ehh yeah.... I'm nuts that's all. I have a chassis that is perfect for it (and no other ESP amp will fit) and I have most of the parts already. It's also a way for me to use some of the KGSS psu boards I have here and will otherwise never be used. The only things I need is a transformer (a Hammond 370 does the trick) and some really nice couplers. The amps cost Rudi about 300$ to make so why not make one for that same amount but with 7n7 tubes instead... Btw. I don't hate Rudi but he's incompetent and the crap he's selling should be illegal.
  6. I have them and the Corda Aria (my only dynamic amp for now) and I need to max it to get a good level with the drivers in an open space. It's also a gain issue due to the internal DAC but I need something with balls... It was worth a shot... I'm also combating whether to build something or just buy this. I don't really need another project with the Blue Hawaii under way and my crazy notion to build an Egmont as well...
  7. That explains it but it's still a strange way to do it as many digital components use transformers on the digital line to do just that. It could also be because the drive was designed as a stand alone transport to feed a clock linked dac in the studio and thus making it simpler to build.
  8. You didn't happen to bring some orthodynamics with you...? I'm considering this amp as a neat solution to drive my orthos but I'm not sure it has the current to pull it off.
  9. Why not use ST then? It's definitely a toslink receiver that feeds the DAC but where the other one is going is hard to tell as it is a transmitter. It could be that the JVC drive can only output S/PDIF but a coax cable would be an even better solution.
  10. You can see the part name on the back in the second to last picture (RX176) and that is Toslink receiver. Further to the right you can see a transmitter as well and both are facing the transport area...
  11. Nice pictures but the player could use some work... What the hell is that internal optical cable seen in the second to last picture connected to? It looks like it is connected to the back of the transport (third picture) but that is just wrong on so many levels if it is feeding the dacs...
  12. The Blue Hawaii won't be cheap but I'm looking to keep mine under 6k$ all in all. It will however depend on how crazy the chassis will be and whether I use an RK50 or not. They can be found for 100$ (that's what the P.P. model sitting on my desk cost me ) but 250-400$ is the norm.
  13. I really doubt that it is possible as some parts are hard to find and the current sources need to be upgraded because of that. The obvious choice is one of the many versions of the SRM-1 as almost all of them had a normal bias output. Then there is the T1's which can be found for about 500$ if you are really lucky. One of my favorite normal bias amps is the SRA-3S though they might need to be recapped due to age and the cramped chassis.
  14. The 404 is a good headphone but it simply doesn't "gel" like the SR-Lambda and the original signature. The Nova Signature is far too dull and lifeless, the 404 a bit of a mixed bag and it's only with the 750$ SR-SC1 where things get better. Not a whole lot better but still a nice improvement.

    Markl Mods

The 4070 and the SR-SC1 both apply here but I've been wanting to do a replacement earcup for the Lambdas for years. The 404 drivers are very, very good as can be heard in the 4070 and the Sigma Pro 404 so all we need is a nice wood or aluminum enclosure. Too bad I truly suck at CAD...

    Markl Mods

There is nothing new to these mods as he's simply taming a pretty wild housing by adding damping pads and then altering the angle of the drivers by stuffing the pads. Go over to the ortho thread and see this done every day. The materials are different and so is the execution but the principle is the same. Stop putting ideas in my head...
  17. I usually leave the arc well alone and just focus on the part above the ears. This works for me and those that I've bought SR-007's for locally but all heads are different and I've eve seen the arc formed into a V shape... The bending will further dial in the bass and treble but those are subtle compared to the gain in the midrange and sound staging.
  18. Highly colored piece of shit compared to one of the most renowned monitors ever made... I have to agree with Marc.
  19. No problem
  20. It's not bad but you could do better such as the SRM-1 Mk2.
  21. Very cheap but sound great. Here are some modded Maggies but everything except the drivers is thrown away and a new frame and crossover is needed.
  22. Maggies are one of the best value speakers you can buy and if you are good at DIY they can be much better. I'm thinking about picking up a set of MMG's to mod for about the same as the price of a Lambda....
  23. It's the best bang for the buck option of the current lineup and a damn good headphone. Don't skimp on the amp though as they are held back by the current 313/323.
  24. Congrats!! It's certainly one of the best phones Stax has ever made.
