Blah... find the Stax F-81 with the amp busting sensitivity of 78dB/W/1m. The stators were also uninsulated so the diaphragm just arced if you drove them too hard.
-
There is definitely something wrong with the bias circuit so I'd send the amp back.
-
Sound Lab?? Stunning speakers to say the least...
-
It's the standard Headamp "Hybrid PSU" board used in both the old BH and the KGSS. The amp board is also from Headamp so I'm guessing Justin sold them to him.
-
With the amp set to RCA the - side of the amp is grounded.
-
Me too by a huge margin. A lot of them yes...
-
The circuit board is held by two screws on each side but there are lots of things that could have been done better. Sound is good but I don't have any bass now for some peculiar reason as it was there initially... \

If it is the unit that was on HF then it's one of mine. You can't go wrong with the normal bias Lambda and the Signature. Another, more obscure version, is the Lambda Spirit (aka Pro Classic in the West) which was the first "budget" Lambda. It's basically the sound of the Lambda Pro with none of the drawbacks.
-
Nice!! One of my old ones I presume...?
-
The bass deficiency is mostly gone now thanks to some running in on those massive output transformers and... ehhh... my mistake. It seems that the RCA/XLR switch doesn't work by turning one off in favor of the other so XLR cable was causing some trouble even with the BH turned off. This is what you get for not including an instructions manual which I wouldn't have read anyway...

Sorry, fresh out of Pro's or any Lambdas for that matter. I own a few in Japan but the scene has been so quiet over there lately that saving up for a shipment isn't going too well. Very cool!!

I just wanted to post a quick update. After about 10 hours of use there is very little bass and the whole sound is rather thin. I knew it was going to be a bumpy ride for the first few days but I hate running in new gear!!! I'm going to let it cook overnight feeding one of my Stax amps and see if it is better in the morning.

I feel a bit ripped off when I buy the 100$ Stax replacement cables but 1500$ is simply insane. I especially like the no warranty bit so it is basically a good old fashioned scam.
-
Why anybody would pay 1500$ for a recable is beyond me. That's the normal retail price of the 4070...

The nasty people at HC which don't like the demigods at ALO and Jena. It's all a gigantic plot you see, involving fairies and pixie dust but not in the normal, magical Jena labs way. It's a bit like the Lord of the Rings but without the rings and the quest is for audio goodness...

Sennheiser Orpheus HE90: by what was the "second batch" different?
spritzer replied to greenhorn's topic in Headphones
Ok, thanks for clarifying that. When I opened up one of the capsules on my former set (to check if the polarity was off) I didn't see anything that was out of place and certainly no resistors on the tabs. Now they could have hidden them inside the driver assembly but that would have been a lot of trouble for something like that. I checked the plug as well and no resistors. -

It would have been much wiser to alter the coating to make it hold less charge then to add a resistor in line. That would make it play well with a 5m bleeder but also works fine with the HEV90 bias supply so that's probably what they did. The stators are very close to the diaphragm so if the charge on the diaphragm is too big it gets attracted to the stators making that nice sucking sound. It's comparable to the "electret effect" where the a channel imbalance springs out of nowhere due to an alien charge of the wrong polarity. -
Lundahl does that on their own but the tape on the small switch mode transformer is probably something that Alex did.

I recently got a 40" Samsung Full HD set and I'm very happy with it. It's the first set that made me want to retire the Sony CRT I had before. Properly calibrated it is a stunning screen but the new LG LCD's are supposed to be even better but there is always something better around the corner.

Sennheiser Orpheus HE90: by what was the "second batch" different?
spritzer replied to greenhorn's topic in Headphones
I tired mine with a HEV90 and there wasn't much of a difference and nothing that can't be attributed to the difference between each and every HE90. -
It's be cool to try it out... anybody has a pair that needs some more sparkle?
-
So how is it? My SR-007A would be here soon if there wasn't a national holiday tomorrow...

That means you'll get it before the weekend!!! I'm adding a pictur of the APL loge to make the waiting harder... It's a pain from Europe but most of Asia is 230v as well so some great deals can be had there. I'm going to start ripping my entire collection as soon as I rebuild the server with enough space and backup to handle it all. I think there will be at least 3 dac's for sale and one is NWO spec. The NWO is also being replaced as TOTL with the obscenely expensive P-01/D-01 mod. As if they weren't expensive to begin with...

Here is a pretty unusual cable, a Stax plug to a 4 pin XLR. I made this for Duggeh so the TakeT H2 can be used with Stax amps instead of that nasty transformer unit. It could also be used as a torture device for K1000 and other similarly equipped phones...

Ohhhh... that makes the full mod a true bargain!!!
