1. Dynamat the windows, sunshine fucks up the mylar anyway...
2. The fabric discs aren't supposed to be glued in, they should simply sit in the driver cutout. Also with the 4070, take care not to block the ports.
3. If you can find a matched quad of NOS Toshiba tubes then you would be golden but any of the Japanese brands are a good match with the Stax amps. Stax also used GE quite a bit in the 90's and they aren't half bad. The amp is pretty easy to adjust but the cheap pots Stax uses make it a bit of a pain. Still practice makes perfect.
4. 717 would be my choice as it is basically a simplified KGSS. The 727 was a new design and not as good IMO.
5. The Mafia approves of this message. If you are hunting for used headphones in Japan Dinny, you might as well look for a used 4070 and install those lovely 404LE pads on them.
6. The problem is that we've never found a cool name for the volcano and it is still named after the glacier. Next door we have M
7. The mods to the 717 are minor in my book. I compared them on my SRM-T2 as a comparison and that comes with excellent input switching.
8. I'm working on a solution to that. Properly isolate the drivers from the rest of the wold and have spare parts like the o-rings (which won't last) and the screws easily available outside of Sennheiser.
9. Pure fucking BS along with his 717 ad stating his is a V2 unit which sounds better.
10. I have fond memories of disconnecting those nice T-plugs at school and watch the whole network come crashing down.
11. Nope, how about "Island mountains glacier" since that's what it means in a direct translation? There are always compromises and to be honest, how many commercial pieces out there are well engineered from start to finish? There is always something rotten, somewhere... That's exactly what my mind was struggling to remember.
12. Try to pronounce it.... In all seriousness the connector used does matter in the same way a RCA plug isn't an ideal choice for the 75ohm of the S/PDIF coax. The BNC is actually 75ohm but for some strange reason many of the "audiophile" connectors are the 50ohm variety.
13. Sell them on HF as being moar burnin and make a killing.
14. Wasn't there some talk about the XLR connector being a very bad choice for the AES/EBU standard and only chosen since it was readily available?
15. They weren't all O2 pads but it did include 10 pairs, 5 SR-Omega pairs and a bunch of Lambda, Sigma and SR-X pads.
16. How times have changed, I placed an order for almost 100 sets back in 2007 with no issue at all.
17. Somebody has to since Ray failed with his cRaptor v1 experiment.
18. We do have some trees, just not a whole lot and most of it has been planted in the last 100 years. We are still close enough to barren wasteland to have NASA experiment for the moon missions here back in the day. We have the geyser's to keep us warm, we burn stuff just for fun.
19. A bit of both I guess. I've heard the HD800 under better circumstances but it's been a while and I don't think the difference was this clear then. That said the ESX is far from the best amp I could have used so it made for a fair fight. Has anybody internal pics of this SPL stuff? They weren't up for some exploratory surgery on my part...
20. I'd go with any of the good 1702/1704/PCM63 dacs but they could need some TLC to perform up to spec. The ADCOM got a lot better simply by swapping out all the cheap/nasty caps for fresh new ones. In other news, I just got back from a visit to the local Sennheiser dealer where we pitted the ESX/SR-007mk1 against the Auditor/HD800. Same source (Rotel DVD player) with the Auditor being fed by the XLR looput on the ESX. It's been a while since I heard the HD800 but the different level of class we are dealing with here more then surprised me. The music was some promo stuff from Sennheiser to promote their mics and the 800 fell flat on its face in terms of a coherent soundstage and anything resembling real bass output.
21. Yup, I'm also building a few ultimate old school Blue Hawaii's (built in a chassis milled from a solid block of aircraft grade aluminum with the usual audiophile candy) and Kerry's version. My old BH will be off to the US soon. ...or just put some transformers on the input. I have some cheap Hammond's here but never felt the need to fit them in the ESX, even if the layout was designed for them in mind (or rather Lundahl's). Finding the right 7n7/7f7's was all it took to get rid of the small imbalance.
22. There are no other WES amps sold without the phase splitting circuitry that I'm aware of and I doubt they would unless somebody wants an XLR only unit. Since we are on the topic, the ESX is dancing right on the edge of working as a phase splitter. Simply putting in a another set of tubes (same type, age, make etc.) will result in mild imbalance but since the amp was supposed to use ECC81's that is really the issue.
23. It sure is purdy...
24. a) That should be just fine for 99% of the amps out there since the RCA input is configured just like that. The only oddity is something like the Woo WES which can't perform the phase splitting necessary for this to work. Either transformers or a phase splitting circuitry is needed then. Such a small difference should have no effect what so ever and in my experience you only run into trouble at 750-800V with the Pro bias Lambdas. The SR-007 doesn't mind that though but I couldn't hear any benefits from pushing the voltage like that.
