My guess is that this has nothing to do with the system being colored. Rather impedance matching, damping factor etc. is the key here.

Well a German Stax engineer would never even have heard about the Airbow as they aren't Stax and not sold outside of Japan. For those of us that have compared a stock 404 against a SR-SC1 side by side, both using the same pads, the difference is quite clear.

Paging Dr. Gilmore, dr. Gilmore to the Stax thread!!! I say the whole cryo BS is just that, BS and the phones are just custom made for Airbow. Subtle changes to the mylar treatment could account for the changes in sound signature. The new SR-404 earpads are all but identical to the LE pads in shape so that is clearly not the issue

I say the SR-SC1 has drivers which aren't made the same way as other SR-404 units. These drivers then found their way into the 404LE. The 253 is the same amp as the stock unit but it might have higher rated parts plus the dedicated PSU so it will have more power.

I'm packing here too. No bottles but Stax transformers and speaker cables aren't exactly feather weight... Might have hit a snag as there is no luggage allowed on my connecting flight according to my e-ticket... I'll have to sort that out in the morning and figure out where that hotel I'm staying at is in Boston. The netbook is at least loaded with music and TV shows so it should make for an ok flight

If you are used to minor repairs the the mod should be no problem. It involves simply adding some blocking material to the port (I use blutac) and altering the spring inside the headphones to make it sit flatter to the headphone body and to make it a bit wider. Warm and extended, noting springs to mind but some of the old Parasound dac's would be a so0lid choice and I quite like the Adcom GDA-700 once I had replaced the aging caps.
