Krell SACD Standard / Marantz SA-11S1
tom_hankins replied to postjack's topic in Home Source Components
A good friend had the Krell MKI when they came out. Sound was great, but within 4-5 months the transport (which was already noisey) stopped reading most disks. he sent it back, same thing again. Got the MKII upgrade, it also had transport problems. I think he shot it. The MKII upgrade never fixed the problem. Now the MKIII uses the transport from the Evo. 505 SACD player and from what I have read they seem to work now. And sound even better than the original and MKII. But (if you can get one)they have gone up to $6K in price. The SACD standard in any form have now been discontinued by Krell. The Marantz SA11s1 is not worth owning IMO. Unfortunatly I wasted my money to find this out. Lifeless, slow and soft. If you like your music dead and boring this is the CDP for you. They also have a record of noisey transports while playing sacd. Which mine did too. I would risk buying a broken Krell sacd standard over a Marantz SA11s1 that worked perfect.. In the $2K range I would look for one of the Modwrights or Exemplars. Also if youy are going to use alot of sacd the Sony SCD-1 with a couple slight mods is good player. I have owned three different Sonys from modwright, and heard Purks Exemplar and they and the SCD-1 are worth checking out. -
Yeah I listened to the Denon with both SS and the tubed PSU. Kevin has two of the denons and the 999Es. all have both PSU. its better with the tubed. The only one I didnt like better with the tubed PSU was the 9100ES. But I didnt like it as much as the 999ES either. You should get upgraded clock. I would also asl Mikhail about the tubes he sent Kevin. They are awesome. The new denon Modwrights are the best Modwright work I have heard. I know your player is very nice. (remember where you got it ) it just never hit me like the 3910.

Kevin and I have done side by side comparisons with the Modwright Sony and Modwright Denon, and the Sony is no where near the player the denon is. I would put the Modwright denon a little better than the 777Es you have, when I owned it with the SS power supply.

Another well under your budget is looking for a used Cary 306/200. They run between 1450.00 and $2K used and they are very good players with lots of options on them. Also built like tanks, and beautiful looking. I used one for 1-2 years and really enjoyed it alot.

Arent you going to be using the source with a balanced system? If so most of your choices wont work without some kind of converter or mods. If you are only looking at redbook I have had the chance to hear the Classe CDP-202 on two recent occasions. it is (next to the Audio research CD7) the best redbook player I have heard. Both players bumping my old favorite the Audio Aero out of the number one spot. They can be had for $3-4K on the used market. If you dont need a balanced player the Modwright Denon 3910 w/tubed PSU is really a great player. From what I remember of Purks Exemplar 2900 it is not quite on the level of the Modwright Denon. Maybe Purk and I can get together and check that out.

Louis Armstrong "SATCHMO plays KING OLIVER" New Orleans Jazz at its best. This is the 200gr. pressing by Audio Fidelity and is a very good recording with some great jams between Louis and Peanuts Hucko on clarinet and Trummy Young on trombone. Really great songs, and Louis voice is as good as gets on this one.

OOPS...I didnt pay attention, Good thing I didnt put that Madonna album in there. This jazz album will make up for my screw up. Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio "Misty" One thing about the label in my screw up post (pure pleasure records) is that there Jazz pressings are great also. And a great selection. Japan pressing, limited editon TBM super cut analogue disk. Three Blind Mice label. Killer piano player, but different than any other stuff I have. Recording is about as good as it gets. Took me a while to warm up to it but now I have three albums by them. All great and all great pressings.

Here is a great Acoustic Blues album. Two of the very best. Buddy Guy and Junior Wells "Going Back to Acoustic" Its an old album but this is a reissue by Pure Pleasure Records cataloge # PPAN 001 I bought this new before Christmas and just got around to listening to it this week. The songs are great and the pressing is to die for. No dicking around, straight ahead acoustic blues with Buddy on guitar and handling most of the vocals and JW adding to them and playing harp. great album. www.purepleasurerecords.com I picked mine up through www.musicdirect.com BTW, That Bill Evans record is a great one.

This is the second time its been up for auction. I cant even imagine where to store all that vinyl. I'm at the point now where I need to build a room off my garage for my records. A friend of mine has about 30,000 albums and they have a huge room of there own. I'd say if I had the money I would buy something like this, but...if I had the money I would probably already own something like this.
