Hydrocity would give you a hug now, but I'm too lazy to figure out those keystrokes.

No mas playing from me, but what's with the complaining? Unsticking threads and getting rid of bestiality pics? Yep. That's heavy moderation. wtf, indeed.
-
The thread that turned me onto these was trying to compare them with Ultrasones, saying they looked and sounded the same, but for under $40. I thought the Ultrasones sounded great for $40 headphones! It was worth a try for what I needed at the time (cans to leave at work and not care if they got stolen) especially at 3 AM. They look a lot like the Ultrasones, except better due to the black. They don't really sound the same, but still good for under $40.
-
Well, the first time I ever saw Ultrasones, all I could think of was Fisher Price toys. I actually bought the 2500s for that reason as I could take it to the middle school I taught at and not worry about the kids breaking them or anyone wanting to steal them. Too bad I didn't like them well enough to use them for even that.

Help purchasing headphones for my mother (closed, K1000?)
boomana replied to Dusty Chalk's topic in Headphones
With no amp, the choices, as I'm sure you know, aren't great. I'd say the bass-shy K701s otherwise. Nice spoiling your momma with K1000s. -
$2,000 Arcam or $200 Oppo + NAD M5 impressions
boomana replied to HiWire's topic in Home Source Components
I've compared my Exemplar Denon 2900 against many of the big boys (not Reimyo or EMM Labs, which I have yet to hear...thinking Feb. John and Al ). For Redbook, it more than holds it's own against the Esoteric DV50 and SA10, Wadia 301, Great Northern modded Opus 21 modded, Ayre C-7xe, and I far prefer it to the Rega or Merdian sound. Others do better at SACD or DVD-A most notably the SA10, which was one with which I did a purposeful comparison. Purk just picked one up off audiogon for under $1200, which is an insanely good price. There's easily had for $1400-1600 depending on some upgrades. -
I suspect that many of the smaller companies (heck, maybe even the bigger ones) that make cheaper headphones source from the same companies for parts.

I've been at every Florida meet that Ray's attended since you joined, and since we're an obnoxiously close-knit group, I pretty much know everyone and make it a point to meet those I don't. I don't remember you. If it was the first meet after you joined, that would have been the December 2006 meet when Ray brought out the B52 for the first time. What batteries was he talking about? You are in no pictures, including group shots of everyone there. Here are your only posts from the impressions thread. For a vocally impressionable guy, I'm surprised: That was in reference to a photo with a broken link, and this one: I'm going to call you a liar.
-
Which meet was that? Other than the mini-meet at NightWoundsTime's, you've missed all the Florida meets that I know about.

Hmmmmm...apology conditionally accepted, as in we'll see.

I didn't have them at the same and spent very little time with each. Could be that they shared other components. I do recall thinking that they were similar in sound, but again, had I had them side by side, would I say that? I dunno. I do think for $35 they're as good as you can get.
-
Pretty much. I sold the Equations (the guy finally paid me 6 months later after flecom kicked his ass) long before, so I don't really remember. Mine had a pretty brutal clamp, and I have a small head. These were as comfy as any headphones I've ever had on.
-
Stagg SHP-4500. $35. They're cheap, damn comfy, not bad sound, especially if your friend is using them primarily for tv. I'd put them up there with the Equation Audio (I've only owned the RP-22X, and not the liked R-21s) but without the clamping, and the seal is good with little to leak out and annoy others (assuming that's the goal). I bought them as beaters, but wasn't really going to use them much. I sold them to Nikongod so he could play with modding them.
-
Dusty, I've heard stock and PinkFloyd modded X-can 2, and the stock X-can 3. I'm not sure they're worth the time, effort and money to do the mods, at least the ones I heard. You'd have to take it farther, imo, to make it worthwhile.

Perhaps it's a more apt commentary on Ed's state of mind than you even intended.
-
Edwood, are you posting drunk again? There's nothing in this thread that calls for your comment, unless you're drunk again and randomly spewing. Even then...
-
Hey, ecclesand. Remember how you tried to put me on ignore at head-fi, but couldn't because the system wouldn't let you? Remember how inanely abusive your idiotic assumptions about me were? I do. Welcome to head-case.

Nice save with a neologism! Kudos to you. But shouldn't that be hippocrate to get the full effect? And are you calling me slow?

The triports? Never heard them.

any good $500 or less amps for the K340's ?
boomana replied to Spiug31's topic in Headphone Amplification
I don't see any balanced options being within your budget. For $275 shipped, you can get a Darkvoice 336i, toss in a couple new tubes and the K340s sound good. I had the 336 not 336i and I haven't paid attention to what changes may have taken place, but it's one of those serious bang for the buck amps if you're looking at K340s, since there's not much around in your price range that can drive them well. I'd suggest a used SinglePower as well, especially since it might do better with other headphones, but if you're looking at only the K340s, pick up and DV and spent the rest of your money on something else or save it up for something better down the line. -
Everyone has the right to change their opinion. People do it all the time, but those I respect change their opinion based on experience and not just people-pleasing enthusiasm, or letting it be swayed every time something new gets told to them. You're right in that there is not an abundance of it here, and it could be people just changing their minds. We'll see. I'm naturally suspicious of people in general, but will give everyone the benefit of the doubt.....once. EDIT: it's the sentence I put in bold that I don't like when I see it in people. Grow a backbone, folks.
-
Nate, why is it that only a couple weeks ago, you were singing Ray's praises, and now you're calling him a douchebag? How could your opinion have changed so much without actually hearing anything new? How much is forum-selective sentiment vs any reality? You worry me.

It doesn't matter necessarily if they're open, closed, or iems. Different headphones have different sound signatures. I'm a bit sensitive to bright sounds and am over-sensitive to those with a lot of treble energy. The most non-fatiguing headphones in my experience are the HD6X0s and R10s. Although I'm not a fan of the Denons, the D5000s were pretty non-fatiguing based on my limited time with them. As far as iems go, the Shure SE530 and SE420s were not bright at all, and though I didn't experience the 310s or 210s as bright or fatiguing, I had other issues with them. Within your budget, however, I'm not sure. Sorry, I just realized I wasn't being very helpful. I had the RP-22Xs for a few weeks and they seemed okay, but I never listened long enough to really test that out. If you're expanding your search to include open headphones, and you can play with your budget a little, you can often get a good deal on HD580s, and can even still buy them new for under $200 (I think) on ebay.

I just renewed my contribution last month. Jude has created a community. Some don't like his methods, but head-fi is his creation. Those that object to either him or the site don't have to visit or can get themselves banned or both. I personally don't have a problem with him or his choices since it's his site and I and others have benefited from it. I understand that others here have a different history than I do, but my experience has been favorable. I do have issues with the general direction head-fi is going, which has more to do with its size, and the overwhelming volume of posts from people who do not seem interested in audio gear and music in the same way that I am, so I found my way here. If head-case needed a financial contribution, I'd make one. I also give to the local public radio and tv stations. Why not? I value all. One reason I like it here is that I know some people will disagree with me about all that, but it's okay. I'm allowed to say I like head-fi and respect Jude, even if I disagree with some things, and those who think otherwise can call me an ass, or whatever, but I can say it. What I find disconcerting is not the people who flat out hate head-fi, but those whom I see on that site kissing butt, being all pro-head-fi, and then coming here and kissing butt and being all anti. I see that from both new members and from some who have been around for awhile. That disingenuousness is ugly.
