high quality balanced DAC (small-ish, lightweight a plus)
nopants replied to justin's topic in Home Source Components
^Sorry I must have misread your post. It would make more sense in that context if they were disabling the on-chip functions, to leverage their existing architecture. I'm kicking this dead thread to bitch and whine about finding a used unit. Audiogon has been sending me email alerts for the qb9 but by the time I get around to looking at the ads they expire- this is typically within 8 hours. Ayre must be doing something right. I think they are offering 500 for the upgrade, so ~2300 used + upgrade vs 3250(?) for a new retail unit must be driving some of this. -
http://www.vt4c.com/shop/program/main.php?group_id=2&cat_id=6 not the best knob store but it has quite a few options I think the most appropriate knob would be a base upon which the amplifier sits, and you rotate the amplifier to adjust the volume

my mistake, I didn't think of graduation because they ask you to provide an edu address- my school nixed mine shortly after I left -

http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/119272/microsoft-store---microsoft-surface-pro-2-10.6-tablet-256gb-1069-128gb-799-64gb Microsoft Surface Pro 2 for 709, back to school sale. The Haswell part significantly reduces the fan activity from what I've been reading- I might get one for my sister who's heading off to college. -
Is there a problem with it being nonisolated? The board already has pads for isolated or otherwise
-
seems like a totally normal thing to monopolize the remaining supply
-
I understood the distinction, I was just thinking that if we spun our own T2 boards (the older version) this would allow some flexibility in heatsink/case choices

seems like a neat alternative to the lil knight group buy

Mike Mercer review Cavalli Liquid gold
nopants replied to complin's topic in Headphone Amplification
they have a minimum of 3 hours for any service request at that. they also won't let me bring the unit into their office by hand even though I'm local to Sunnyvale. maybe I'll just try to pander a bag of parts from them -
Mike Mercer review Cavalli Liquid gold

I'm not sure what Spectral employs as a model, but they did quote me 175 per hour, min 8 hours, plus parts just to get their DAC recapped. Out of control -
damn you helped him so well even I upside down caked

Is there an issue with making 400V the "standard"? Are the BJTs cheaper than the IXYS parts? I've got half-stuffed boards which are gathering dust on my desk...not that I should be thinking about finishing them in the first place

The real question is why hasn't anyone made a balanced version yet

Just bought Stax SR-009 (arrggg) but no amp
nopants replied to Jon L's topic in Headphone Amplification
Sorry I didn't think it was that vague, I was generally wondering about this in the context of using DHT's as output devices. If you wanted something tangible, I was reading about the the AN Jinro in stereophile. -

Can anyone comment on the positive qualities of DHT's over other types of tubes? I know THD isn't the best place to start but I have noticed that they have relatively high figures, and whoever is reviewing the amplifier glosses over that and waxes poetic about "magical qualities". Also, I keep seeing mention of "the beast" from morgan jones' book, but the schematic has been lost over time. Can someone repost it? -
Megatron Electrostatic Headphone Amplifier
nopants replied to kevin gilmore's topic in Do It Yourself
Can anyone comment on using Antek transformers for a Megatron/KGST build? I'm trying to reduce my dependency on SumR custom products, and edcor seems to have leadtimes for all the relevant transformers. Antek seems to provide a number of transformers with both HV and filaments on a single toroid- are there any problems with using those filament windings on the output? -
Thanks for the leads guys, I'll probably give this a shot over the weekend... as soon as I get my music server back up and running.

Having put significant funding towards redbook playback (spectral + ar-t legato), I've been noticing that a lot more of the music I've been scooping up is 24/96...some multi-disc albums are being re-released in BD format. Running them in foobar through the resampling seems to make everything sound like garbage as well. Is there a meaningful amount of hi-res to warrant support these days? The internet would have you believe that the only stuff available in DSD is snooty classical albums.
-
Does that mean it'll have excessive treble that gets touted as "incredible detail"? I'd be surprised if they could do that with orthodynamic technology...though I've only heard the LCD2's and the HE400 to date.

Megatron Electrostatic Headphone Amplifier
nopants replied to kevin gilmore's topic in Do It Yourself
in preparation for California's hot spring and summer, I finally got around to bringing in the megatron to work: I'm pretty sure this looks imposing enough that I won't have to worry about anyone stealing it. Modified Lavry underneath the laptop -
or you could just use smd c0g's and have enough space on the board for vertical heatsinks instead of that angled bracket deal
-
some interesting choices with respect to the assembly inside I'm a bit wary of the (over)abundance of film caps too Is there any info on the chipset?
-
The diyhifi.org thread makes mention of a need for more decoupling so I'll probably give that a shot next. Thinking of cramming some copper clad underneath and shoving some caps inbetween. I should make purchasing some measurement equipment a higher priority... If anyone had an interest in using shunt regulators for this, I measured -15/+15 at 375 ma and 5V at 75 ma (idle) if my memory serves me properly.
