Megatron Electrostatic Headphone Amplifier

Mine are also running fairly hot, probably also around 80C last I checked. I haven't run into any issues running up to 12 hours at a time -

I'm considering tricking mine out with another hv supply for the 300v line, anyone know of appropriate low power (ie reasonably sized) transformer? how does the srd generate bias in that small package? -
My transformer also ran slightly warmer than ambient under normal conditions, which is why there was some alarm on my part when I touched the case underside. I didn't have something on hand to measure the heat, and I didn't want to leave it on long enough to check. During that period, the amplifier LEDs were all light as normal. I used the insulating mats that Richard provided. The real red flag was that smell...I still can't figure out what exactly was burning. I'll find out once I pull the transformer tonight. I understand that ambient temperature may affect this as well, as it has been ~90s at my place recently. However, I've been pointing a fan in its general direction (to cool my SDR2000, whose feet melted during normal operation) Richard has implied that he can build a replacement, and has offered to install a reset fuse in case of overheating. Any thoughts on this? Spritzer, in the past you've mentioned some sort of construction fix to pass to Richard (larger diameter wire)? I'm a bit concerned about using another SumR as a replacement, but if that falls through I can scrape together two hammond 269GX's as a substitute.

Turned on my kgsshv today, heard some louder than normal lamination hum along with some crackling, opened things up and nothing seems to be amiss except for the transformer being extremely hot, and a particularly acrid smell. I used the specs in ujammerstad's BOM so I don't think the specs are at fault... 450VAC output for +/-500VDC rails Sumr part #: RC0100 050 3 100VA / 117V primary 2 x 450V (@125mA output ea) secondaries 1 x 30VCT (15V-0-15V) 10VA secondary Core band Static shields I didn't realize these transformers retain heat for so long too...makes me worried about the SumR units I had potted. Is this retention normal, or is something happening inside?

This would be a nice first project imo, nothing to offboard, tube sockets are fairly forgiving, etc. If you are actually in Beijing you should be able to rope someone in to solder for you too, but that wouldn't be any fun

so the best buy for longevity would be port modding a mkii? are there any measures mk1 users can take to reduce the strain?

There are some vintage? military connectors listed on ebay that would fit the bill, I can't remember in which thread they appeared. Definitely less than 74 a pop -
I apologize, I wasn't undermining your effort in any way

Could do without the brand smattering, title could be across the top blah blah tags for categories of headphones could be more uniform in placement interesting infographic otherwise, but there's probably something with a website front that might provide more utility. If you are claiming that "momentums don't belong in Audiophile Reference headphones and have moved them to 'Mobile Devices'" then maybe there is merit in using the proximity to the regions of overlap to specify a degree of how "audiophile" or "reference" a headphone is

does eBay sell zchannel devices? I am not seeing them when I look them up at RadioShack

I forgot I also have a joystick with cherry mx black switches, does this count if I use it to type trash talk on PSN street fighter? People rage when I mic my buttons and pretend to mash
-
I used a kinesis with the red linear switches I believe. I get the feeling it is less ergo than the cheap keys
-
NOS RFTs can be found for around 40 a pop, as national electric I believe

only ONE entry point to the headphones? the imbalance must be excruciating!

Any transformer hum from the "MT-F1"? That's actually one of my issues from the SumR transformers I've been using for my builds, lamination hum which gets to be audible from about a foot away. I'm getting quoted at 740 from cart100, that's a pretty good price for THE MUSICAL JOURNEY

I would switch those LEDs to the other side of the board if you can hack it, one of mine was broken and it was very difficult to troubleshoot from a first glance -
What are your plans for the PSU? separate chassis, split rails?
-
this seems accurate from other pictures, but those glasses are totally photoshopped

any details on the "first" kgss that spritzer alluded to? This seems like a pretty convincing buy.

On the subject of teflon tubing, can anyone recommend a practical diameter for to220 and to92 leads? Is there a lot of variability when it comes to elasticity, and is that something I need to look out for?
-
does that mean I can mod my LL by installing a bottle of pepto bismo
-
what is this scream that you guys are mentioning? I remember reading he had a switching supply for DHT's, and it would be amusing if that noise was the ps ramping up in frequency
-
better served for dual psu megatron

it's not custom, and it's 50$. built to order so some lead time
