  1. Fucking auto correct. That should be *replacing
  2. I thought teaching the headband assembly was pretty simple. Ask you need is a small jewelers type screwdriver. Replacing the pads on the other hand is a pain in the ass
  3. I think that is the best thing you could have done. Worst case the dean says he/she can't do anything, best case you get to retake the exam and maybe the TA gets slapped down a little. Out of curiosity what was your research area for your PhD in math?
  4. Or you could say screw apple and buy a player that actually has a microsd slot for expandable memory. You can get a 32 gig microsd card for 30-40 dollars on sale. I have 4 that I use with my clip+, which still isn't my entire collection but is everything I listen to regularly. Total cost of ~150 bucks.
  5. Have a happy birthday!
  6. I use kester 44. 63/37 rosin core .031 diameter. Haven't seen any reason to change solder.
  7. http://www.amazon.co...ASIN=B000ARU9PO Pretty good price for the WES51d, which is more or less equivalent to the 936. I use the non digital version all the time at work and it does great, although I'm not typically using it to solder heatsinks there.
  8. I had no problem with the KGSSHV boards with the Hakko 936, which I think is 50 watts. I did crank the heat way higher when doing the heatsink pins than I usually use though, I think I was up around 800 degrees F versus 650-700 that I typically use.
  9. Maybe consider salk songtower or HT2 depending on budget. You can get them in your choice of custom wood veneers and are beautiful speakers IMO. You also get a 30 day in home trial if you choose a standard veneer.
  10. I didn't use any conformal coating and didn't have any kind of shorting or arcing problems. I think like Horio said if the joints are neat and solder isn't all over the place you should be fine. Although if jcx were here I imagine he would not agree. That thread was a disaster - someone who doesn't know one end of a diode from the other, and worse yet the difference between a resistor and a diode on a layout should not be building a KGSSHV.
  11. ^^ Nice! What are you going to do for ventilation?
  12. Happy Birthday!
  13. It's really not that unreasonable a suggestion. Lots of internet direct speaker companies offer 30 day trials for their stuff such as Emotiva, Salk, Ascend, Hsu, and others. Sometimes you just pay shipping and sometimes they will even foot that bill. And some of those guys, like Salk, don't move a ton of volume.
  14. You just blew my mind
  15. Yes I was concerned about the voltage. I believe in the related thread someone said it can handle up to 3A of current though. Still kind of useless if it can't handle the voltage though, thanks for the input. Confirmed from the designer - it can do 2.5 amps but only 36 volts. So not even close to being useful for T2/KGSSHV transistors.
  16. Any thoughts from people more experienced with test equipment on this curve tracer? http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/group-buys/206794-gb-diy-curve-tracer-pc.html
  17. Very nice. I like the bocote a lot
  18. Who puts filet mignon on paper plates Looks delicious though
  19. Wow that is fantastic casework! Nice touch including the mini3 too.
  20. Haha love the copyright on the darkstar schematic. You should post the information on the current limit over at the other place... some people might start crying when they find out their amp can't put 150 watts into their HE-6. Of course someone will probably ask you if you have heard a RAY SAMUELS da(o)rkstar and if not then you can't possibly know its output power. Although if they took the time to read the data sheet it is spelled out clear as day in there once you know the component values.
  21. I think we all know that a prettier box guarantees an amp to sound better What I find more disturbing is that Ray Samuels seems to have no clue what it means for an amp to be operating in class A. Apparently you are in class A if your amp can swing a lot of voltage and source a lot of current.
  22. The manual still says 12 watts max when charging, which would be 1A @ 12 volts
  23. Here's my interpretation of a back emf generated by a magnetic planar speaker: If you consider a planar magnetic headphone, it consists of a series of permanent magnets in some fixed configuration with a membrane suspended in between the magnets. On that membrane/diaphragm are circuit traces through which the current flows. As this current changes it induces a magnetic field (see ampere's law) that interacts with the fixed magnets and causes the daiphragm to move. However, it is important to also remember the dual of ampere's law, faraday's law, which states that a change in magnetic field will induce an electric field. I believe theoretically the magnetic fields due to the fixed magnets in a planar magnetic driver is supposed to be uniform, however obviously in real life this is not going to be completely true. Therefore as the traces on the diaphragm pass through areas of varying magnetic field strength an electric field ie. a back emf. As to the magnitude of the back emf I don't have a clue.
  24. Well I was assuming 2A would be peak. But even if we use the equation on the sigma 11 site Tj=Ta+(P*(Rjc+Rcs+Rsa) allowing a fairly warm ambient of say 40 degrees C 100<=40+(7*2*(3.3+.48+2)) 100<=40+(7*11.6) 100<=121 This is using the Bergquist isolation pad and the recommend aavid onboard sink, as well as the recommended 7V over desired regulation. So I guess you're right 2A continuous would be too much. But if it's more like 1A continuous and 2A peak then the junction temperature is only 80.6 which would be fine, and I seriously doubt something that specifies a 2A supply will be pulling 2A continuously. And you could always use offboard sinks for better cooling. The 7V above regulation is rather conservative as well. Edit: I just took a peek at the manual and under the technical specs section it states up to 12W power consumption when charging a device, so it should never be pulling more than 1A continuous.
