Sonic Studio 302 (aka Metric Halo ULN-2)
Augsburger replied to jp11801's topic in Home Source Components
Well I have achieved partial success with the ULN-8. Most of my miss starts can be attributed to my ignorance of pro audio and sound engineers protocols, nonetheless what I am hearing so far is very promising. Unfortunately for now the impressions are only from the headphone jacks since I cannot get any signal out of the DB-25 analog port to my mono blocks. The music I am hearing is damn good and will only get better when I can send them through my speakers and sub.First and very preliminary impressions are very large yet realistic sound stage, very fast and accurate dynamics. currently I am listening to Friday Night in San Francisco [Original recording remastered] of Paco De Lucia, Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin and this is the best I have heard of this CD yet. The dynamics and decay of the guitar seems to me to be pretty much spot on. Every Saturday I take my son to guitar lessons where I am able to hear a lot of "amateur" acoustical guitarists playing classical pieces and I can say this ULN-8 seems to reproduce the music as if it is live. Very surprising and is much much more than I ever hoped for. Thanks Al and John this is a real find and a sick deal given the price to quality relationship. -
I now have bass balls extroadinere, I drink the coolaide and I will ignore anyone who dosen't agree. Awesome stuff and exceeds my most skeptical expectations. Love the bass or embrass the Yeti..............your choice.

OK, it's been one hour, anything new? As I recall from my brief experience with the PW DAC over the summer the PWD DAC was indeed very revealing and the music seemed to present a lot more depth to the soundstage giving the rooma a real clubby sound. I really liked it based upon my all too brief audition. Are you considering getting the bridge when it is released 2Q this year?

But they have poor oral hygene yah know.

Dinny, I am still working up the learning curve. Some progress tonight, I finally figured out how to send a signal into the ULN-8, now I need to figure out how to get the music out of Pandora's box. Kind of wierd, the ULN-8 supports FW400 and FW800 yet it only has two FW400 ports. My Mac Mini has a FW800 port so I mistakenly assumed that a FW800 cable would make everything work Saturday evening as I sat down with a nice Cab and ready to rock......... not. Oh and Al is right, the JH13s have all the natural bass that exists in the recordings, anyone wanting anymore bass deserves to be french kissed by a Yeti.
-
Some I requested two cases but we will have to see what they grant me.

I pretty much agree there on the bass. I am a little puzzled by those who criticized the Pro13 bass, any more bass and it would sound contrived or artificial. They really do scale well and offer a smooth natural sound. I am hooking them up to my Trafomatic tonight for some transformer goodness. to make up for my ULN-8 fail.

Well I have given it some time and can say the fit is damn near spot on. I still haven't had them in for longer than 40 minutes or so but so far I have not experienced any discomfort. The JH13s scale really nicely and the soundstage seems to be much deeper detailed and musician spacial placement better than the Triple Fis they are replacing. I still need to cycle through some of my higher rez files to get a better handle on the improvement but for now I am pretty pleased. As it turns out the sharks are right side up when the IEMs are properly in the ears though they didn't come out as I thought I communicated to Zac and given that these are the product of two failed earlier attempts, I will call it a day and just try to enjoy the music. Dinny, I hope yours come back right this time.

Happy Dom Birthday.

Actually they are a start.

The TRS to XLR cable will serve multiple purposes; as Nate stated, they can serve as traveling and meet cables, they can serve as primary cables while I am fiddling around with/searching for additional XLR to whatever cables, and lastly they may very well serve as my preamp to mono block interconnects. I have unofficially named them the Nugget Audio Octo Udders.

X2 as long as what Strech said is legal, moral and financially responsible..... Wait we are on HeadCase right? X2 FTW!

Thank you for setting this up, I bought a few tickets as well

Very delicious looking. Do your culinary skills come naturally or were you classically trained?
-
I will give myself a 72 hour time out for now on this issue. *sigh*

Good news Pete, and damn you Al and JP.

And now for something different, not exactly what I had envisioned but looks OK. Sharks are upside down.

Blue Note RVG- Stanley Turrentine Very analog sounding CD, quite nice.

If I did that, I seriously doubt anyone would want to drink any with me. Even this bunch of neer-do-wells.......

Thanks for the advice, duley noted. Would it be better to check booze with luggage or ship it to the hotel?
