I think Horio and Neko are next. Let one of them know when you are done so they can pick it up and drop off at Whitney's place.
-
Did you actually sell yours? I've been trying not to say anything bad about it on HF until you sold it...
-
NP. You can grab them from Christian or Whitney when the time comes. I'll figure out the logistics. Whitney's got them for almost another week.
-
I'll be sending it to you well before my two weeks are up by next Monday. I concur with almost everything Ric said. Really great amp. My review is on HF. Only difference is that I feel the Volcano PS is needed when using harsh or grainy headphones. Also some noise on very sensitive headphones like the Audio Technica's.
-
Whitney's got my LCD3s right now and they are slated to go to Christian next week. I put Frank on the list because I know he is interested (he hasn't gotten back to me). Let me know if anyone in the Bay Area wants to borrow them for a week. Maybe a couple more slots - I'm not itching to get them back soon or anything. I would prefer that they be picked-up or dropped-off rather than mailed. I figure this would be a good way for folks to hear the most perfect headphones evar! SF Bay Area Rhythmdevils CEETEE blessingx? NekoAudio (to 12/17) Particleman (to 12/24) Horio (to 12/31) Bob to (to 1/7) =====DONE====== SoCal 909 (to 1/14) n3rdling (to 1/21) =====DONE====== Heading back north a little bit... Just in case you guys haven't caught wind of it yet, I posted a toilet paper mod for the LCD3 on HF for shits and giggles: http://www.head-fi.o...on#post_7904568

We know. We already know that too. I get the feeling it should be safe now that they've had some time to iron out a few things. Sanker kept stressing their QA - at least 6-7 times at the Irvine meet. The last two r2s (one Audeze brought to meet and Mr. Eddie Current's) I've heard sounded pretty good. They could be cherry picked ones though.
-
The built-in "digital lens" sounds legit. However the bridge already essentially has this. PSA should have first fixed the bridge, gotten the bugs out, and made gapless work.
-
Get the mesh plate and report back. Inquiring minds want to know.
-
That stuff is there - just buried. n3rdling's three sentence comparison between the R10 and LCD3 told us a lot more about those headphones than Skylab's several paragraphs. Andy - I wouldn't worry about that if you are thinking about getting a LCD-3 as alternative headphone to the HD800 so you can just relax. The LCD-3 is actually more laid back because of its smoother treble - better than the LCD-2 in this regard. The tonal balance is the same.

Yup. I asked and simply copied you. Running the EML300B solid plates. I tried a few others, but for HD800, I'm sticking to the EMLs. Craig loves the transparency and neutrality of the PX4s. The EML300B solid plates are ever so slightly thick, which makes it a good match for the HD800s. The PX4s are more harmonically rich than the EML300B, but the 300B are richer in low mids. Both have good tight bass - none of that mushy shit. The 6SN7s mostly sound similar to each other. I'm running either the Brimar (black base black glass w/ wings) or a National Union tall glass 7N7 on an adapter. I would shudder at the use of the TSRP and PX4s with the HD800 - makes the BA sound more like the Apex Peak. But you may like it.
-
Agreed. Only that you if you want an "open" version of the Paradox, you gotta pay $1850 more.
-
I had no issues with soundstage - unlike with the LCDr1, it never came up as an issue while I was listening to them. Soundstage is not something I put high on my priority list even though my main cans are HD800s. The LCD3 is no O2 substitute. BHSE/O2 > BA/LCD3 - based on meet conditions - but it wasn't close. If you like the STAX sound (speed, blackground, clarity, attack, transients, articulation, etc.) get a STAX or wait for LCD6.
-
I liked it. Think of it as an incremental improvement over the LCD2r2. It's basically what the LCD2 should have been in the first place. I think it should be priced at $1345 or $1445 or whatever. I posted my thoughts on HF. Meeting conditions were not ideal. @rhythmdevils: I think you will like this iteration. Smoother treble, no ringing, no reverb. I doubt you will pay for it. BTW The r2 I heard at this meet was noticeable better sounding than the r2 I heard at the OC Headroom meet a few months ago. Anax can corroborate.
-
They've already done that with the LCD-2.
-
So I assume they are similar in size / have similar headband apparatus as the LCD2? I have a big head - and I was just getting a little excited because JPnums just commented on HF they are more linear sounding than LCD2.
-
The wood's for the cheapness of construction, especially in fairly smallish quantities. Monoblock headphone amplifiers and now a $1065 driver swap. I don't know what the world is coming to.
-
Given some relatively huge differences I've heard between STAX amps such as the SRM323 and KGSS/BHSE, I would be very curious about non-linear or even just harmonic distortion, especially at the low frequencies below 150Hz. The electrostatics do work very differently from dynamic drivers. I just very quickly played a 50Hz tone at 90db on the SR009 (out of the SRM323), and I see large spikes -30db at the 2nd and 3rd harmonics on the RTA. I'm too lazy to calculate what this comes out to in terms of THD, but it seems rather high compared to Tyll's measurements of the 009 out of the BHSE.
-
Yup. I'll do another measurement with the solid plate too. I figure the more data, the better for your models. I would send you LCD2 data too, but the driver production variances are too extreme, even among those on the same headphone.
-
My CSD plots are on HF for the SR009.
-
Tyll, looking through your data download sheets, I can't seem to find any correlation between headphone characteristics and pre-ringing. For example, the HE6 ,T50RP, and LCD2 look clean, the HE5 exhibits obvious pre-ringing, the HD800, T1, and RS1 exhibit very minor pre-ringing. I haven't thoroughly checked through my own data, but I think everything I've got has some pre-ringing, which could be an effect of the reactive components (caps) in the amp that I'm using. As far as the square wave initial overshoot and following undershoot, it's hard to say what's supposed to be ideal. I like to think of this similar in a way to how a car suspension (shocks) works. My personal view is that some overshoot is good. To me the HD800 and SR007 are just right. The Grados and HE6 are a bit way too much (they sound etched), and the LCD2 is a bit over-damped. And this correlates very well with your data. In the end, it's what you said - trust our ears.
-
Awesome. The measurements look nice indeed. THD in bass is impressive.

I realized I didn't fully answer this aspect on the other site. IMD can very be significant because it's easily heard compared to harmonic distortion. If you look at the dual-tone (200Hz + 2200Hz) non-linear distortion graphs, see you will two side bands at 2000Hz and 2400Hz. For ESP950 and HD800, these bands are down 50+db. For the HP1000, it's only down a little more than 40db. This is still definitely hearable because 2000Hz and 2400Hz have nothing to do with the original intended signals (200Hz or 2200Hz) - or more precisely, they are not (low) integer multiples. (EDIT: 2000Hz and 2400Hz would be the 10th and 12th harmonics of 200Hz, but there's very little if anything contributing to that from the 200Hz test tone. You get the idea.) Anyways, lowering IMD is one of the advantages for going to multiple drivers for speakers.

x2. The tubes seat well and you have good sense of contact adjustment when adjusting the screws. You never feel as if the sockets are too loose fitting - or so tight that you might fly backwards when pulling a tube out. I can't say how they are going to like the long term though, but they do seem very high quality.
