  1. Hey all- So I need some advice. My pre (99) only has one set of preouts which is currently running to my power (909), and I need to get my sub back in the system somehow. At first I was running the power with the Quadlink and the sub with the regular preout, but the Quadlink really does sound as bad as everyone says it does, so thats not an option. The sub can be run with either interconnects or speaker wire, and it has outs for both. So this leaves me with three options: 1. Use a Y-splitter from the pre. For some reason this feels like a bad idea, feels like it would degrade the signal. Anyone ever done this? 2. Run interconnects to the sub and then from the sub back to the power. The sub is about 7 feet away from the power, so that would be about 14 ft of interconnects (blue jeans lc-1). 3. Run speaker wire to the sub and then back to the speakers. This would end up being quite a lot of speaker wire from the power through the sub to the speakers, I haven't added it up but I'm thinking 20 or 25 feet. Currently the sub is behind me, so it is possible I could move it behind the speakers which might cut down on the speaker wire length a bit. Thoughts? Thanks.
  2. Binder is the king of very fine nibs. I believe he does up to XXXXF. man, I'm going to end up buying a VP again. I've bought and sold that pen so many times. 909/99 shipped today, will let everyone know next week how they work out.
  3. done that! if you want to try something fancy for your VP, consider a custom nib unit from Richard Binder. his VP stubs are awesome.
  4. oh yeah, if he likes Senns, the W5K isn't for him. to anemic in the bass.
  5. not all AT woodies are ideal for the big headed. the W11JPN was pretty snug on my big dome, while the W5000 felt quite nice. I never owned the VTG but it looks similar to the JPN. I say 650 + isolation booth.
  6. just got a smoking deal on a Quad 99/909 combo from a semi-local audiogon seller. I am officially "all Quad". 840A up for sale soon if anyone wants a good integrated at a great price.

  9. is your smiley an inferred winky smiley? i'm a huge RA fan, to the point where I might consider him the greatest living songwriter, even if the show the other week was a disappointment. I would love to see the Cards tour without RA in smaller venues, it would be a trip to see a full Neal Casal show. Emerson Lake & Palmer - s/t Japanese K2
  10. yeah, its pretty much totally awesome. me: Mastodon - Crack the Skye
  11. Or maybe I could buy my own ram. Apparently its pretty easy to get installed.
  12. I'm looking to pick one of these $199 Mini 9's up tonight to take advantage of the sale. My primary use will be browsing the net in the den while listening to my speakers, but I would also like the ability to use it to do needle drops. Any suggestions for upgrades? I'm thinking the extra $25 for the 1 gig of ram is all I'll need.
  13. The Stone Roses - The Very Best of the Stone Roses
  14. glad to hear the ety plugs are popular round these parts. Mine will get their first test at Mastodon on April 11th.
  15. Mastodon - Crack the Skye the new single is fracking awesome.

  17. TV on the Radio - Dear Science
  18. Right on, since levels differ in a small club, midsize theater, arena, etc. My primary concert are the high frequencies in a small to midsize club. I always hate the excessive brightness when the show starts, then my ears adjust, which scares me a little.
  19. While we're here, I need to pick up a pair of ear plugs for concerts. Anyone have any recommendations? When I google "ear plugs for concerts" these eties come up: Amazon.com: Customer Reviews: ETYMOTIC RESEARCH ER20BP High Fidelity Ear Plugs ( Clear )
  20. Ryan Adams and the Cardinals Thursday kind of sucked. I had fun, and there were a few shining moments, but for the most part Ryan was rushing the songs and playing like he didn't give a shit, just going through the motions. 23 songs, 90 minutes. A far cry from his Mobile show Fall '07, which was transcendental. Apparently he rocked the next night in Atlanta, which is supposedly his last live concert for a while, if not forever. Still its obvious he is tired of the road, and I'd be perfectly happy if he just recorded for a while. Its really disappointing when you know how good an artist can sound live, and they don't meet that expectation, not because of them just having an off night, but because they aren't really trying. Just got back from North Mississippi Allstars with Hill Country Revue at the Soul Kitchen Music Hall, and that was a gnarly show. Refreshing to see some musicians play the shit out of their instruments after the above described disappointment. Up next: Mastodon at the NOLA HOB, April 11th.
  21. Sweet, thanks for sharing Joe, and welcome to head-case. Though I'm not as into headphones as I used to be, I'm very intrigued by both the PS1000 and HD800, and look forward to hearing both at some point.
  22. I guess my question then is to who? Who is the audience that appreciates this piercing treble? Obviously they are out there somewhere.
  23. i'd like the PS1000 to keep the GS1000's bass and soundstage, it can change everything else. i like the reports of a more forward midrange with the PS1000, but do not like these murmurings of sibilance. why do manufacturers keep making cans so fucking bright? i don't understand it.
  24. Awesome. If defining guilty pleasure as listening to music other people think sucks and therefore think I should feel guilty about listening to it, then Phil Collins solo stuff is my guilty pleasure, though I certainly feel zero guilt about Collins' masterfully crafted and beautifully recorded pop hits. His first three albums are masterpieces from a purely sonic perspective, which certainly doesn't hurt my enjoyment of them.
