Well the fridgador is up and running. It's been on for a couple days with a half oz of beads, but I just introduced the hygrometer last night. At the lowest temperature setting I'm getting 60 degrees F and 68% humidity. I'm surprised the humidity is so high, I thought I'd need more beads. I have one cigar in there! I'm being very careful in my purchases because it's clear I only appreciate milder smokes. I think I'm going to pickup a mild sampler from CI.

Wiped it down with distilled water, then distilled water and a small amount of dawn, then did a rinse wipe down with more distilled water. Seems to have alleviated the smell already. Its sitting in place in the other room as we speak. Haven't turned it on yet.

the outlets do have the two different size receptacles, so polarity should be good. thanks Dan. Continuing to calibrate the hygrometer. when I first got it in I really fiddled with the calibration knob so it messed me up (I didn't realize the read out wouldn't change until I hit the set button). it was pretty good straight out of the box though, just 1% low. it's back in the Humidipak bag now and hopefully should be correct by tomorrow morning. I also got my beads in but I think I might need more. Only ordered a half pound. We'll see. The Edgestar does have a strong plastic smell. I think I'll try scrubbing I with distilled water and a mild detergent and then let it air out for a day. And I managed to procure one empty wood box from a liquor store.

Okey dokey, an electrical question for you folks out there. Got the Edgestar in today, everything looks groovy. Problem is its a three prong plug, and the place I want to set it up (extra bedroom) has only two prong outlets. The manual of course says to plug it into a grounded outlet. What I want to do is use a cheater 3 pin to 2 pin plug. I use cheater plugs all over my house on all kinds of stuff with no ill effect, but not on my refrigerator. I don't know anything about electricity, so I just want to make sure this is safe.

The Beatles - Abbey Road BC-13 box vinyl. sounds awesome with the grado silver cart. unrefined, but fun. and awesome.

Which tubes to make an Extreme Platinum turn into a β22?

x2 on the 5998s. I guess they run $40 apiece? to me RCA 6SN7s always have an insanely rich midrange, but fuzzy in the highs and lows. so not neutral, but still some of my favorite 6SN7s. these are the grey glass RCAs, not sure if there are different sounding ones. -
there are a bunch of these Edgestar 28 bottle units for sale on eBay for $200 shipped. they get pretty good reviews overall around the net, the best reviews specifically coming from cigar enthusiasts. I think this is the one. now all I need is some cigar boxes and humidity beads.

i don't think target sells them anymore, unfortunately. at least nothing comes up on their website.

NVT: how much did your 28 set you back, if you don't mind me asking?
-
nope, no basement. good idea though. and dan's advice is noted.

update: purchased a cheap hygrometer and a boveda calbration kit using an amazon gift certificate. snag/question: I'm growing concerned about the temperature of my future stoagie stash. I live in the Deep South, and it is hot son. temperatures in the mid to upper nineties. I keep my home AC at 80 during the day, but even set there it can struggle to maintain 80. At night it's 74, but it has to run for several hours before it's truly at 74 degrees. my understanding is cigars like 65-75 degrees. so would it be wise for me to try and get a scratch and dent thermoelectric vinotemp on eBay? I could afford a 12 bottle model. this would give me less storage then a comparably priced ice chest. opinions?

excellent point. OK, DIY it is. I'm going to do a Coolidor using the beads, like described here.

NVT: nice, but yeah, a little big. Dan: nice, how do those beads differ from a Credo?

So I'm humidor shopping. Anyone know of a good online retailer? I've been browsing around at Thompson Cigar, and I really like the looks of this one.. Seems to fit the bill: spanish cedar, good size. Hard to know the quality though without holding it in my hands, but I'd like to avoid paying full retail at the local tobacconist if possible. Having said that, I'd rather pay for quality the first time rather then struggling through a bunch of crappy humidors. Where I live its hot and humid most of the year, if that makes any difference. Thanks!

love my hf-2. easily betters my memories of any of the RS-1s I owned. I think the key is you get a fabulous Grado midrange with really perfect bass. they still suck with classical; still a Grado, but with rock, they rock. scale up quite nicely with vinyl.

for me it's a no brainer, the HD800 wins. purely for comfort reasons.

What kind of armboard do you use for that arm Pete?
