Thanks for sharing your impressions, all very well said. I am especially intrigued by the above quote. I know exactly what you are talking about with the HD650. Its like all the instruments are standing inside a big jello mold, that weaves and waves in time to my quavering hunger breath, craving the sweet, sweet pecans inside all the while. A not altogether unpleasant sound, mind you, just not focused and razorsharp like you are saying the L3000 is.

sounds cool! i'm not a big portable guy, but I admit to having dreams of one day using my computer as source again. -
I guess this is actually a valid point. Lets say by some amazing miracle AT produced a can that at least approached the L3K's greatness (I am assuming it is great since it is probably now officially the most owned high end can on HC, i've personally never heard it), and for a quarter of the cost. The L3K would still retain its status and probably still command its high price tag because audio is such a subtle and subjective thing, and because many would still prefer the sound of the L3K. But the rest of the chumps could have their "l3k-lite" or whatever.

This is a good point. And the GS-1000 will always be, at best, a controversial can. At worst, it will completely fall out of favor with the headphone community. It seems to be popular amongst non-headphone audiophiles who don't know any better. Meaning they know the Grado name from their $2,500 grado cartridges, so they grab up the most expensive can in the line and assume it is the bees knees, as good as headphones get.

Shouldn't you be studying for pharmacist school or something? seriously though, you are my hero, I just changed my screensaver.

Final verdict: ain't for me. The soundstage is great, the comfort is great, the bass is great, but the midrange is recessed and grainy, the highs can be sibilant, and the upper midrange/lower highs are slippery. Here's hoping the GS-2000 resolves some of these problems.

an unsweet tea at lone star. last major purchase was a Pelikan M620 Athens.

One man's mindless repetitive music is another man's sharing in the universal groove. but seriously chekhonte, if you are bored by the 1-15, the 40-50 (aka "the slog") will make you hate life. 50-60 also sucks, but by then at least you are used to not dinging once every 4-8 hours. After the level cap was raised, I didn't make it past 64 before I quit.

Sure. I only like it here because everyone likes the same gear I do. I fear different tastes and opinions. All this appreciation for new gear has me suspicious. If it wasn't made in the early 90s or earlier, or if it wasn't a piece of gear greatly misunderstood and underappreciated while it was in production. its got NO place at head-case, IMO. Unless it is a source with an MSRP > $4,000, of course.

I love the AT wings! The W5000 is extremely comfortable on my large noggin.

This is where I'm looking towards as well. I still think the HD650 is a hell of a can in its price range, but I'm prepared to pay a hefty price tag for a badass high end Sennheiser dynamic (the mythical HD700). My only experience with AT is the W5000, but I think it is a very intersesting can.

hey, i'm still rockin' the Grados! grado is king. while reks and j-pizzle are all like sellin' their shit, i'm holdin' it down 4 real.

sounds like mmorpgs might not be for you. i was completely enthralled when I was where you were. obviously even I got tired of it though.

Alright purk! Welcome to head-case!

I don't know yet. It's such a unique sound, really the polar opposite of the HP-2's out and out neutrality. The upper-midrange heat doesn't bother me anymore, it was just initially such a shock to my Grado and Sennheiser pampered ears. Also, I also haven't really been able to dedicate enough time to them to make a decision, not only because I've been busy lately but also because I got the GS-1k at the same time. So I've got to try to fit in not just test out new headphones time for two different headphones, but also normal listening time with my old headphones. It's a tough life I tells ya. This probably shouldn't affect my decision, but it also seems like the market is pretty flooded with W5000s for sale right now. I had three different buyers to choose from when I picked mine up, and I've seen even more pop up since then. Bottom line is I want to spend more time with both the gs-1k and the W5000, as if I end up selling either of them I want to be 100% sure it was the right decision.
