why is that? i thought the first and second generations were relatively similar, i.e. same parts.

If this trend continues, all the RS-1s in production three years from now will be pink. "The Ladies' Grado" On a more on topic note, I have spent the past few evenings spinning Ryan Adams and Steely Dan vinyl, listening to my RS-1 with flat pads through the Dynahi. It truly is a fine headphone.

This is some good sense right here. Modded players are aplenty, and its not like I have a ton of DVD-As I need to listen to right at this moment.
-
and if it was from ray the vinyl guys over at sh.tv would cream all over it.

if you say soda or pop you sound like a yankee to me.

lotta love for the 3910, seems to be a good bang for the buck player. but now that I have all this money back after selling a bunch of gear, I find myself reluctant to spend it! the paypal balance looks so nice. And then hungrych does an IC on his L3000s. Grrrrr...
-
ack, also the sacdmods 3910 has balanced outputs, if I ever decide to go that route.
-
yeah, APL being "the" name in mods makes his the most expensive. of course by all accounts they are superb units worthy of their asking price. The sacdmods is attractive because I possibly could at some point in the future go multichannel with it if the fancy ever struck me, plus its a grand cheaper. The Modwright is stereo only, but again I know I like Dan's work. Both companies stand behind their products by all accounts.

So I'm tinkering with the notion of dumping the 999es in favor of a player which also handles DVD-A and HDCD. HDCD capability is important since all of the new Grateful Dead Rhino releases are HDCD encoded, and I love the Grateful Dead. The most immediately obvious choice is a modded Denon 3910, since it is widely positively reviewed, and modded models can be had cheap on the gon. As we speak there is an sacdmods for 1300 and a modwright for 2300. I tend toward the Modwright since I'm already a fan of the Modwright house sound, and since it has that big ass overbuilt power supply (which, if I bought used, I would send in to get the tube rectification upgrade). I'm looking for recommendations beyond just modded units, they can be stock as well. $1000-3000 territory, thanks.

Very cool, thanks for this heads up. DCD is great.

My biggest qualm with the high price of the iMod is that, in my experience and the experience of my immediate group of friends (which, given, hardly is a representative sample of all iPod users, but FWIW...), iPods tend to die quickly relative to other electronic gadgets. The first two iPods I owned died in the first year, but I sold my 2g Nano a month or so after I bought it. Now I have a 1g shuffle and it is great.

Also please note no one gets more enjoyment and information out of this forum then I do. Per your's and Earl's concerns in my FS thread I have abstained from creating any unnecessary humor in the on topic forums.

In no way was I starting this thread as a mockery of Head-Fi. I was just making a joke. Please don't search for any deeper meaning or relevance in anything I post. I'm just bored at work and hoping to garner a few laughs through silliness. In no way is this intended as a mean-spirited jibe at anyone at HF.

Review of: Cary CD 360 Downstream components: I called the president of Cary in Boulder, CO and found out he is a swell guy with a great philosophy on making fantastic audio gear and cd players. We hung out and had coffee and he shared with me his philosophy. From Pres of Cary: "Basically I make audio cd players for people who love music. I don't use any trickery or craziness in my CDP. Here in Boulder this is how we do things, very good work and then we go skiing". From the first note I knew the CD 360 was a revelation. It has a bold, rich sound like a hot cup of french roast on a cool fall day in Boulder, CO. SACDs were even better. Awesomely enough the Cary CD 360 has a digital input so I can run an optical out from my MacBook iPro and listen to MP3s via iTunes. I had downloaded the new Modest Mouse album and it sounded amazing, lilke layers of goodness like I was seeing into the music. I put on a cd of "bang bang maxwwell single hammer" and it was like I was hearing the Beatles for thefirst ime. The timpanis were crisp and clear but not overly bright. The drum kicks were very intense and meaty, full. I heartily recommend this player to anyone who wants to stop listening to their gear, and start listening to their music again. Its like I was 13 listening to the beatles for the first time.

Review: Moon Audio Luna Headphone Amplification Associated Gear: headphones, cd player, cables Imagine a world where music is excellent, and one can have a transformer coupled tube amp from Moon Audio to power your HD650 or Grado. Well stop imaging, your world has come true! The Moon Audio Luna is a true high end experience in audio gear. I powered my Grado headphones with it and turned up the volume and it got very loud while still having that famous Grado prat and midrange. Imaging was outstanding. I stand up and applaud Moon Audio and their achievement. The soundstage was still small like it normally is on my Grado but it was bigger then it had been previously. Highly black.

This is an excellent question Nanoho. The best part about any background when it comes to speakers OR headphones is how black it is overall, darkness etc. Oftentimes you can get the background blacker with a better power source or a more resolving driver.

Anyone care to review some gear they haven't ever heard? The HE90 is a great headphone, especially paired with the Orpheus headphone amplifier. The Orpheus has the power in wattage and ampules to move the electrostatic weave band very quickly creating beautiful transient response and superb imaging akin to the best speaker systems ever made. Its like being there with the musicians when you listen to it. I was listening to jazz with it and it is like Miles Davis is alive and in my room with me blowing horn. Its like finally i stop listening to my gear and start listening to the music. After all, isn't that what this hobby is all about? Also the HE90 has a blacker background. Its like the HE90 company took a Sennheiser and Grado and combined them into the ultimate headphone. Go ahead, give it a shot.

lol, this is the best shit ever.
-
Hey Peter, don't you have a 3910? Have you listened to any HDCDs on it?

bump, price dropped to reflect poor condition. \

After spending a couple of weeks with the Aqvox and comparing it side by side with the Modwright, the 999es still comes out on top. In redbook, the Modwright has a slight edge because of greater warmth, darkness, and a truly massive soundstage. The Aqvox doesn't have the sony hardness of the 999es, meaning its a bit softer in the higher frequencies, but it has a smaller soundstage and isn't anywhere near as warm as the 999es. The softness, detail, smoothness, and intimacy of the Aqvox are all attractive attributes, and thus choosing between the two sources when it comes to redbook is more a matter of personal taste. Of course, throw an SACD on the Modwright and it blows the Aqvox out of the water, but I expected that.
