happy birthday!

I've long wanted to try an Aeron, but I'm right in the damn middle of the sizing chart between B and C. Nowhere local to try one out, scared to buy and get the wrong size. The new Mirra 2 also looks interesting. Seems to be taking a page from the Steelcase Leap, in that it adjusts to you.

thats exactly what i'd do if i had an IKEA nearby. i actually cancelled the order for the above rack about 20 minutes after I placed it. decided to keep looking. There is a seller on a'gon who sells VTI racks, they look nice and are reasonably priced. Will look into that a little more.

Yup its basically a DIY salamander archetype iirc.

Hell yeah. These guys destroy live. Love that album.

well instead of going the more expensive route i went with the "this should be fine" route: http://www.amazon.com/Walker-Edison-Multi-Level-Component-Stand/dp/B00166BWZ4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1391482129&sr=8-3&keywords=walker+edison I think it looks great and by all accounts it is heavy, stable, and easy to put together.

my primary digital source is the rega apollo, which I really love. plenty revealing but definitely not analytical. I'm probably 60% spinning CDs and 40% spinning vinyl. I have oodles of FLAC files but computer audio hasn't turned me on for a long time. i'll probably get a new DAC eventually but for the time being I'm so happy with my CDP, so why bother? not looking to buy a new headphone amp right this moment, i'm at the beginning of my research period. maybe after tax season, or festival season, I'll be looking to purchase. BUT if I wanted to go the GS-X route now would be a good time to get in line, so to speak, as delivery would probably occur around that time. i appreciate your comments.

Addiction kills. In particular fuck opiates. Love and will miss you.

Interesting, I hadn't considered the Apex Peak. When it comes to the world of headphone amps, I'm definitely drawn to manufacturers/designers that I know or one of you personally knows. The audio world is already so full of shenanigans, and within the headphone amplification subset it seems like there is an even greater concentration of shenanigans than in the audio world at large. so todd/millett, justin/gilmore, dsavitsk, etc., are the types of names I can trust. I think we all (at headcase) pretty much operate on a similar principle. the luxman stuff looks awesome, i guess i just don't know enough about it to feel comfortable with the brand. i tend to be fiercely brand loyal, to a fault sometimes. anything i haven't obsessively, exhaustively researched doesn't sit right with me.

Very small rocks!

Spent the past few days reading/rereading this thread. One of the more informative and entertaining threads I've ever read on headcase. Bought my HD800 from justin about a month ago. I love 'em. Not much more I can say other than what others have said. It shows you what is in the recording, nothing more, nothing less. Some people don't like the highs, I actually love the highs. Sounds very "pro audio" instead of "hi fi" if that makes any sense. Some rock recordings are just bright. A drumstick cracking a cymbal is just bright. Some guitarists tone is just really shrieking bright. Is that necessarily pleasant to listen to? No, but whether or not you enjoy that unpleasantness depends on what your goal in this crazy hobby is. I get excited when I'm hearing exactly what is in that recording. If I just want the sound to be revealing but fun, I'll listen to my speakers. so gs-x mk2 or whatever ECP audio dreams up next? tell me what to do headcase.

Dynamic amp? / 2nd to main Stax rig / small / $300-$600ish?

Moar gs-x mk2 then! -
So I'm in need of a component rack of some kind. As it stands I have my turntable on a random wood end table, and the rest of my gear splayed across my computer desk. The desk is way too cluttered, and whenever I do decide on a dac there won't be any room for it. So I need to once again buy some sort of equipment rack. The current most obvious choice is a Salamander Archetype: http://www.amazon.com/Salamander-A5-Archetype-5-0-Black/dp/B0006VPUMQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1391319380&sr=8-1&keywords=salamander+archetype I'd opt for the upgraded cherry model because it looks nicer. However, I dread putting the damn thing together and leveling all the shelves. And $400 still seems like a lot for five pieces of hard wood and some metal rods. This solid steel rack also looks nice: http://www.musicdirect.com/p-7538-solidsteel-35-stand-black.aspx On sale for $450 at musicdirect. I'm curious what other people use to stack their stuff on. I feel like I've done a ton of research but want to make sure I haven't missed anything. I'm willing to spend some cash for this, but nothing super ridiculous. Not looking for any audiophile hoodoo, zima, hula hoops, or pacman video games. Just a rack solid enough to put a turntable on top without negatively impacting the sound.

The g-lite was GLORIOUS with my RS-1. Better than the beta for sure. -

actually i found the hd800 wasn't the best pairing with the g-lite. it was sufficient, don't get me wrong, but I could easily crank up the volume to full blast. felt like i needed more powah. could just be me, but the beta was a better match. -
Kind sir I offer you five hundred american dollars. Wait what the hell is that?

Yeah I think shit is about to get real. In two weeks. Stupid Superbowl

Have you seen Dallas Buyers Club? MM gave the best performance of the year by far.

i'm behind, but I watched the premiere a couple days ago. Outstanding so far. Very noir, and can be considered a "period" piece if you consider 1995 long enough ago to be a "period". Very excited to see where this goes.

i think you'll love it. i happened upon this thread right when i was about to put the g-lite on the market. i really loved this little amp, was perfect for my AT and Grado cans, but once i moved to the HD800 the Beta made more sense. I'll get it in the mail to you tomorrow. -
Being an eater of cake I came across this delicious cake that they were just going to throw out. Knowing that they were not cheap and could possible make a difference to my system; I snatched them up. Skeptical... but I figured it wouldn't hurt to try them out. Well I have to say it was worth the 30 seconds to shove this cake in my mouth. Widening my lips as much as I could, utilizing the bottom half of my jaw bypassing the chewing I heard an improvement right away, not huge but defiantly there. My system seemed to have allot more oomph, Bass is heavier and more pronounced. The whole sound had more weight to it sounding like more tasty cake was getting through. These cakes are about 3x the weight of the standard, why... not sure, haven't dissected.. sign of higher quality icing maybe? Like I said: not a huge improvement but worth the $20-$30. You should give her a try, available at your local bakery

glad you like the neuman monitors, and welcome to head-case! while i'm happy with my Rega RS1s I've been researching active studio monitors lately. Been reading about the various Dynaudio models, the Adam A7x, Mackies, etc. Actives just make sense to me, and i find myself drifting more in the direction of accuracy and resolution, as opposed to the past few years where warmth and fun have been more my priorities. Particularly hearing the HD800 again after many years brought me right back to the joy peering directly into a recording can bring, even if the end picture is ugly. The first song I listened to when I got my HD800 Friday was '39 by Queen, the MFSL mastering. Not the greatest recording in the world, but being able to hear every little thing in that recording exactly as it was recorded was a really moving experience. Was one of those moments when I remember why I got into this hobby in the first place. I'm thinking a Benchmark DAC2 + a dope set of studio monitors would be a hell of a nearfield system if pure brutal resolution is the goal. just need to get infinite money.
