Nah, I'm not ready to buy new speakers yet. I'm going to spend more time cutting my audiophile speaker teeth on the Quads.

Duly noted. I'll scratch the subwoofer idea until I've heard the speakers in my larger room. Thanks to all for the helpful suggestions.

The problem is my listening area is so cramped, so there isn't much area to move things around in. Moving them any closer to the wall makes the bass "louder", but it sounds crappy and bloaty. I do have an extra bedroom I store my books and vinyl in, and I've considered moving my entire rig, computer and all, into this room to give the speakers more room to breathe. It would be a hell of an undertaking though. It would give me the opportunity to mount my turntable (and future turntables) on the wall though, which would be great.
  4. well fuck it, no point in me showing up. :'(
  5. I can't wait to hear your impressions with the pico.
  6. Based on the briefest of comparisons, I believe that the recabled pair is slightly peakier in the upper midrange, making the newer buttonless pair more pleasant to listen to. Whether this is attributable to the old design or the recable (or both) is debatable. Also, when listening to the recabled pair, I have to connect it to an Black Dragon XLRx2 -> furutech SE plug in order to run it off my Dynahi, so this should also be taken into account.
  7. Damn picasa. Sorry about that. thanks deepak for the save.

Deepak, I already have taken four of these and mounted them inside K1000 cages. They are perfect for blowing one's fool head.

I feel like they are not going low enough. The room is definitely a small size room, I sit around six feet from my speakers and they are ~7in from the wall. I'm in the middle of the room with my desk behind me. Unfortunately there is a large opening to my left, meaning my listening "room" is not so much a room as a little addon extension to my bedroom. Don't get me wrong, the bass is good, but I just want more and lower. I was listening to Gershwin's "An American In Paris" on DG vinyl a few days ago, and I knew the bass should be reaching lower.

Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely look into the SVS subs then.
  11. Got the buttonless RS-1 in today, been listening all night. Here are some quick pics with the previous generation RS-1: They certainly aren't bad looking phones, but I admit that in person they lose some of their "oomph" visually. They don't really strike me as bold, flagship phones, but as rather timid and quiet looking. I think this effect has as much to do with the font as the lack of button. The overall quality of the wood, however, is about the same. I thought the wood itself would appear cheaper, but it doesn't. Maybe the way its cut, but not the wood itself. As for the sound, there is certainly nothing wrong with them. They sound fantastic, no complaints at all here. Listening all night with zero fatigue. I'll do more comparisons later.

Really what I think I'm looking for is just deeper bass. thats what excited me about the REL subs that I found out about only hours ago via Reks' linkage: they are made to compliment full size speakers. I am happy with the sound coming from my Quads, but when listening to vinyl especially, I crave to hear those low, deep, visceral notes that I know lie deep within those grooves. I should have made this clear in the OP.

So it looks like I absolutely must get a REL sub to fill out the low low frequencies in my speaker system. The model I am immediately drawn towards is the T1, and I'd prefer to find one used. Does anyone have any suggestions or guidance they would like to offer in regards to these subs? EDIT: See also this thread

  18. Even though my 22Ls are fullsize, I still sometimes want more bass. Let me know how your subwoofer works out for you. But I know if I put a subwoofer in my tiny listening area I'll be bass fucked.
