For critical listening you should not be tainting your mind with the alcohols!
  2. Thanks for the leg work Andy. I am going to have to bow out.
  3. Do you mean the Japanese pre-order price from that one site? I agree $4500 seems more realistic.
  4. If it is at or under $4000 I might be in I'm still skeptical about this. And I'm guessing tomorrow our Norse friend will squash our hopes

IMO the Pass Labs XA amps sound very good. I would like to hear Atma-sphere amps. ymmv, I am not a SET lover Dusty: no I think I am ok with my headphones but I'm waiting to hear what trusted folks have to say about SR-009, also just waiting for my ESL hp amp. Great speakers in a well treated, appropriately sized room are more enjoyable than headphones to me, but I will keep the high end hp setup because they are fun too.

With the flippers down the speakers are tilted even further back. With them flipped up the speakers are more vertical, but not fully vertical. I've made props so they are perfectly vertical, but the difference is minor from the stock adjusters. And they were unstable IMO once you go beyond used 1.6 price range the used ESLs become better and better value. And what I'm planning to upgrade to next before the ultimate upgrade!

I tilt my MMG forward. It helps with imaging, but the difference isn't huge. Reflections aren't an issue with thick carpet. The speakers aren't angled to the floor, only very slightly backwards from the vertical position.
  8. Boris - New Album Inoxia records vinyl I fucking love this band. Who else can go from making a jpop album to releasing a mega heavy drone album with Merzbow in the same year. Boris. Also Inoxia based out of Japan shipped me both vinyl albums in the midst of their earthquake/tsunami crisis. Insane
  9. Converted all my Euros I earned as a medical/surgical intern in Ireland to USD with a really nice rate. I made the mistake of not converting them as soon as I left Ireland when the rates were pretty good, so the money sat in an average interest account for a while. I am pretty damn happy tonight! I have my last paycheck and my tax refund in another Irish bank, that I need to convert.
  10. 30 Neutrik RCA connectors and 50 feet of starquad. Time to rearrange my home theater setup
  11. I like how the baby elephant has already been assumed to buy one I plan to be a late adopter, I don't think I will get one this year.
  12. There is no CanJam this year unless you mean RMAF?

Well said! I've often thought about this as well as I auditioned various speaker rigs None of them are perfect, but a good set of headphones like the Stax O2 does come very close (as far as headphone limitations go). Headphones will never be able to recreate the illusion of a full force uncompressed drum kit like huge horns in a big room, but those speakers will fail miserably in many other areas. But with large speakers comes the requirement for a large listening room otherwise I've heard a few systems where the speakers overwhelm the room. The quest for striving for near perfection is more exciting to me with a speaker rig as there are so many more variables, vs just source, amp, headphones.

For planars the best imaging I've heard was from Sound Labs. I believe someone you knew owned those right Dmitri? What did you think? I agree that imaging is not a strong suit on the Maggies.
  15. Al; so awesome he gets two threads Happy birthday
  16. I opened it up before turning it on to make sure nothing was awry. I should have taken pics before putting it in the rack , it was a pain in the butt to install, since it's dual mono the analog outputs are on opposite sides plus the IEC inlet is sideways. Nearly had a 10 lb steel lamp knock me on the head while trying to fit the cables in That is indeed your handiwork, a stop gap while waiting for the T2
  17. Got it yesterday morning. With just under 10 hours listening this is damn good digital. A lifer source I guess there were a lot of upgrades done to the Platinum version, the literature mentions Blackgatez damn son

Magnepan is keeping the price reasonable along the lines of the 3.6 and not pricing them stratospherically.
  19. Hey Tyll I believe one of the old school Grado pads were called VWAP after the guy that made them. I want to say they were modded HD414 pads dyed black, but they might have been customs. It looks like a flat pad with the slits cut in, so I don't know if your first or third one might be one of them.
