They're more comparable to the Omega 2 (driven by a good amp). The L3000 is much better than the SR-404. They're better than both older Lambdas as well (not sure about the Nova Sig).

edit: damn, Sennheiser HD580 stays in good. Sony CD3000 (I wonder why I forgot that one ) is the very last in good. Can't make tier 4 because it's really shitty value, it really belongs in a tier by itself

But purely based on technical merit the K1000 exceeds the L3000, but for listening time the L3000 gets most of my attention. This is because I don't have an amp for the K1000 at the moment and secondly I really love rock, jazz and blues on the L3000. Oh yes I did find that I had to play the HD650 louder than the L3000 when listening to most music (including metal), the closed nature of the L3000 makes drums and basslines sound a lot better even at lower volumes (and regardless of volume I think they handle macro-dynamics better). And it's my preference to spend the most on the transducer, followed by amp or source (whatever you feel gives you more gains).

I don't think the HD650 changes enough with a good amp if you did find it "insert adjectives". Though the only headphone in production that I can think of that I'd still recommend is the HD650...but if you can afford the L3000 they handle metal (yes I know I only listen to Opeth and Arcturus) and classical "with aplomb".

So the 6N1P is really a tits driver for the 300B? That's two amps I see that are using it that you say are high end. What makes it better than a 6DJ8 driver? Perhaps it's just that I've read nothing but bad stuff about Russian tubes.

My post was light hearted with the Head-Case "pffft". I don't think they're that great, just my opinion.

You really don't need to. IMO purely based off technical merit I would rank them Omega 2 >= (or equal to, depends I guess) L3000 >>>> K340 (both my pairs, opposite versions). And I heard bloated bass on the SR-404 and Lambda Pro. It was definitely better on the Lambda (regular bias) but I'd need to spend more time with them to be sure.
