My laptop needs to get faster
granodemostasa replied to granodemostasa's topic in GoRedwings19's Computer Help Hotline
I wanted an SSD, and I previously saw the price at 350.... but then i realized that THAT price was for the sellers.. for me i'll be over 1K just for the drive.... so i'm putting that idea aside for now... I think i might try one of the faster 10K-15K hard disk drives? Reasons why I don't want linux: 1. I have quite a bit of information (like my itunes library, pictures, research projects) well organized on my computer and i'll take me a millennium to reorganize it. 2. I'm highly dependent on Windows Office and Note-One for my work and need everything as it is. so if you guys can get around these things... i'll take a look at linux. -
Hello I have a 2.5 year old thinkpad T42 that needs to upgrade it's speed. I don't like the new vista.. or the newer T60/61 models so I just want to upgrade what I got (i just spent like a month with a t61p that was so tank-like i called it the "petreaus computer"... and the windows kept crashing like once ever 3 days!) 1. my memory is already 2gb, which is as much as this computer is willing to go. 2. it's a very clean computer... so i don't think i have anything slowing it down.. but eliminating useless programs is always a plus. 3. i want to focus on the hard drive: Should i get a solid state hard drive or should i get http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3296045&CatId=1277 which is a pretty fast conventional drive. (i got like 3 external hard drives where i keep my junk...so i dont need more than 30gb really) 4. How can i copy my old hard drive perfectly so that everything will be exactly how it was before... and not have to go through the process of re-doing everything again? 5. I've heard of some SS drives for the PC card slot that can boot windows-making start up faster, are any of these for sale yet?

This is bitter me: Vote Clinton: because 15 years of failure to change anything is equal to experience. vote Clinton: because the American presidency could be handed down like a piece of family furniture. vote Clinton: because white middle class women actually think that her presidency would be historically significant. vote Clinton: because baby-boomers are not done dividing America. vote Clinton: because there are plenty of red states that will stay red. vote Clinton: because doing the right thing only goes so far as one doesn't risk Michigan's electoral votes. vote Clinton: because in this difficult age, we cannot afford to start dreaming of a better future. Reactionary politics is here to stay!

i'm gonna have to invent a reason to buy this... -
i wonder if there is any news as how these do against the what-i'm-about-to-get-triple-fi....

See, i just dont' get that. What's wrong with HF, that a Dynahi for 590 will not sell immediately. In fact, it's been on the FS forum for quite a while know...bothering me every time i still see it up.

what... did i say anything about Asians? competition? or even the academics? i'm talking about the uphill climb to campus!
-
I hear youz high school student: take it from someone who just wrote a thesis: Drop out. i beg you to save yourself grief and hardship in the future, don't do what I did. Don't believe the people who put fancy careers, big names, and lotsa book n your face... it's not worth it. It took me a long time to figure this out, but i'm better for it now... get out of school, take a job, join a gang, become a Rail road hopper, or a sheep herder... just don't stay in school!

I suppose the bill had to pass... it was after a bill recognizing ramadan and diwali. Still, with 435 house members, you'd think there'd be someone competent enough to understand the variances within Christianity!
-
the bill is not that far off. If it could be reworded as a liberal-classic defense of religious freedom, it might have some democratic values to it. As it stands, it's just asking to be killed. The worst problem with it is that it is simply wrong: dec 25th has other non-christian holiday meanings, not all christians celebrate Christmas, and western tradition is far more than just "judeo-Christian." The other issue is that it seeks to define exactly what Christmas means, including what it means for Christians... (i'd at least call for a synod before making this declaration!) I'm pretty sure that the language in this funky resolution has a predecessor that it is being compared to. That is, the bottom half of it reads like a document, not unlike the ones congress has approved of before, that is meant to protect a historically persecuted minority. IN the resolution format, it does not carry any legal power, but the moral support; think of the resolution condemning persecution against Armenians. The meaning of the document is the biggest problem. If a resolution like this is passed, it would signal an attempt by congress to protect the "persecuted" group and aid it in it's "struggle." Now what does this mean if only "Christians" are included in the bill? While a person with wilsonian sentiments like myself might want to expend it and make it into a bill about human rights... no matter it could end up taking energy away from our already over-complicated foreign policy goals. (Do we know start putting sanctions on European countries for violating the rights of many muslims?)

there are many ways to pass this will without violating the constitution, they just have to change/cross out about 20 words or so and i'll actually be acceptable.

I think I'm going to get two lens: the canon 50, and the Sigma 20.
-
John rocker.... i forgot about that piece of human scum.

being a 20d, my 18 is about the length of a 28ish or so on my T2 Rebel. The basic problem i have is that I still have the kit lens, and that thing just isn't doing anything justice (3.5-5.6), so even a 2.8 would do remarkably well for my needs. The lighting in the buldings where i'm shooting is also very bad (bay area buildings are remarkably dark inside). that being said, I'm talking to a dude (craigslist) in my local area and I could get the sigma 20mm for 350, which seems like a deal to me, and saves me the whole shipping and waiting bit.
-
hi, actually. yea, i'm seriously down to these two lenses. with this lens taking the lead for right now... although the cannon is tempting because on amazon it's one day shipping right now.
-
Amazon.com: Sigma 20mm f/1.8 EX DG RF Aspherical Wide Angle Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras: Electronics very interesting lens... i'd jump, but I've not used that type of wide angle before. I'm gonna go do some research now.. Amazon.com: Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Wide Angle Lens for Canon SLR Cameras: Electronics this one also seems promising, and it's the same amount of $
-
the thing that bothers me about the fixed lenses is that my camera is a 20d, and i would have to back away considerably more than I would if I were taking at 17 and not 50.
-
what do you mean by that?

it's another afternoon to evening in the city by the bay. I'm going to class, getting out of discussion, when I see a beautiful tree against a lit stone building. The sun is going down... I prepare, set up, click, hold... and when i get back home, I realize it was too slow... the image isn't as sharp, i'm shaking too much. I meet a group of friends at a restaurant, I take pictures as they come in, but they wink too much when my flash goes off. The light around it isn't bad, but being indoors is a disaster for this lens. I tell my camera not to flash. I get two results, either it's kinda dark and the guy sitting next to Teresa (my subject) isn't even visible. Or... worse things happen. In short, I need a faster lens. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=149&modelid=12955 http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=148&modelid=8940 basically. I want one of these two... I'm leaning for the first one, but the second IS an L lens. what do you all think.

you could just get a USB sound card and run that, they don't lose much info (as USB was designed not to), and run a short coax. One USB card i always recommend is the audiophile usb.
-
i didn't mean i've liked most of them. Nearly every dac I admire is absurdly oversampling: wadia, esoteric, Emm, APL. in any case, there's alot of claims there... and not enough of the details that I would like to know about a dac before buying it.
-
take both, listen to them. then you'll know.

i've heard plenty.
