Relative Importance of Power Cable/Power Conditioner?
DigiPete replied to barmar46's topic in Audio Accessories
Power conditioner can help if you have noisey power going to a unit with poor filtering in the Power Supply section. Try it with and without and without the conditioner. If you don't hear a difference, return the power conditioner. You may want to have one for power surges, etc though. Power cable.... not for a cd player, unless yours consumes 10 amps, then maybe.... shielding of the power cable could help in an RFI contaminated environment. Definitely would not spend any serious money here. Just get a nice decent build quality and thickness cable and be done with it <$100 Room treatments can help if done right. Depends on your set up. -
Just bought a hat-trick of Eagles LPs

got the vinyl rig going yesterday with this
-
I wonder if there is a nice PCB to use for the unregulated part of the PS?
-
I assume less than 10 will be more expensive. I would rather get the cheaper Avel, and build a separate supply box located away from the preamp box. Also, see if Avel 236007 30+30 15VA is available. A bit smaller, but still got plenty of power reserve, and might be even cheaper. Just my two cents.

Here is the input from Sumr for a custom transformer: Peter, I have designed for low flux density, the result is a larger transformer. The OD: 3" HT: 1.3" Input: 1 prim. 120Vac @ 60 Hz, Ouput: 2sec. x 30Vac @ 0.34 amps. A/ Transformer with a core band wrapped around the OD under final mylar insulation. B/ Transformer encapsulated in toroid box with extra steel banding above and below to minimize stray magnetic field. Picture attached of toroid box used in similar application as yours. Pricing based on order of 10 pcs. A/ silicon band US $ 39.00/each B/ Encapsulated, US $ 50.00/each Please let me know if this is of interest. Thankyou, Richard Primrose

Right, this should be at 50% or below the rated current. Probably hard to find less than 15VA for a 30+30V trafo. I'll check with Sumr.
-
I get 53 ma per board, say 100 ma each including headroom, or 8VA for both, so a trafo of about 30+30 15VA should be plenty. Check my math... Avel 236007 30+30 15VA or equivalent seems good.

Anybody figure out what the power consumption for two boards is? Another idea... would it be advantageous to build a sigma22 PS instead, and bypass whats on the Pearl for a PSU?
-
Ok, I will contact Sumr and see what's available and try to get some pricing. Pete
-
I'd be in favor of a single trafo powering both boards, vs. dual trafos with about a 50-65% loading.
-
I have dual Avel Lindbergs for my Dynamite PSU and they work just fine, not sure there is anything to be gained with more expensive toroids. Now a mag sheilded toroid may be of some use in this application...

Ditto.... and for the vinyl rig...
-
When I get the specs on my cartridge, I'll prevail upon you smart guys to help me determine those resistors/caps to match my cartridge
-
I plan on getting an MC cartridge with 2.2mv output. How do you adjust the input impeadance of the Pearl to match the cartridge being used? Or is there any need to?
-
So will this work properly with both MM and MC carts, or does the circuit need tweaking to adjust the gain for one or the other?
-
I guess I'd better learn the lingo fast...
-
Are those Jfets available yet? I'm in for a group buy.
-
Seems J&R is out of the 150

Ok, so I'm hearing AT440MLa DL-103 DL-110 AT-150MLX a bit of a step-up in price. IF I choose between the 110 and the 440MLa, which would be better? Will all of these work properly with my turntable tonearm and receiver? Not getting a preamp or other TT for a while.
-
Thanks guys.... Decisions decisions..... What should I get for a decent basic vinyl and stylus cleaner?
-
correction stylus in now broken after I tried to straighten it... a new cartridge it is. What is a good sweet spot price/performance wise for a cartridge, assuming I may step up to a fairly decent phono-preamp later on? Is $200 a much better spot soundwise, or do you have to go much higher?
-
Ok, after the wife of all people told me to get the records and turntable out, not used since the 80's... here is where we stand, remember this was bought on a high school/college student budget... Technics SL-D3 mechanically still works Cartridge: ADC PSX-30 stylus is slightly bent Denon 3806 Receiver has phono input (MM type?) Where do I start to get going fast, and get the most improvement for the least $$ ?? I am thinking a new cartridge may be the first step.... Suggestions?? New name (analPete??)

Yeah that's the one, out of production now, but you may be able to score a deal on the few new ones left out there. Is has a very nice picture, and can be easily calibrated to a very precise level. SXRD is Sony's version of LCOS. Got very good reviews in HT mag, beat only by a few $5k and above plasmas...
