Need Help with Audio Note Headphone Amp
kevin gilmore replied to audiosceptic's topic in Do It Yourself
the khozmo's can be fixed but you have to take them completely apart and realign all the wipers for position and pressure. plus fix any bad solder joints which there are usually a few of. -
you do realize that there is no way you are going to get everything in one chassis... amp board is 254 x 191 mm original power supply board 150 x 98 mm
-
me likee
-
what chassis is that, and what is the internal size especially height.
-
for one thing, low voltages. for another, lots and lots of standing current. at least an ampere. his newest stuff is silicon carbide jfets for the output. Very different devices from mosfets.
-
mosfets are wonderful... in power supplies that is. unless your name is nelson pass.
-
And that picture is missing all the output transistors. I wonder why?
-
Schiit posted pictures of the Ragnarok. Really nice stuff. Obviously built to be repairable. And a layout that makes sense. Cavalli pictures... even ones the size Schitt posted... Never going to happen.

This! but a fair bit of this is deliberate to continue to sell more of the same crap. First LLmk1. Then LLmk2 which is the same on the inside with a horrible SE to balanced converter, and a pretty new box. Then the LLmk3 which has tubes in the gain stage (which is a huge improvement over the fucking mosfet) But still alex has mosfets shoved so far up his ass, he can't see how wrong they are for this application. But when you design with strictly a voltmeter, this is what you get. Alex is likely a nice guy. Or forces his persona to act like a nice guy. His biggest problem is his 2 main shills. One of which has designed the liquid glass for sure. There is absolutely no way in hell that alex designed the power supply in the LLmk1. Just not his style. Compare to everything he has released previously. And the stuff really is non-repairable. The LAU is a perfect example. once you install the output transistors and then solder them in from the top, just the task of getting the circuit board (which is in one piece) out for repairs without damaging something is very hard.

.062 is fine, that's what the current ones are.
-
may need to be as high as 200 ohms. what is happening is that its oscillating with a zero impedance input. Same thing a buf634 does.
-
Www.pcbnet.com amp board is 10 x 7.5 inches 609 holes 10 boards from pcbnet.com would be $425 3 oz copper
-
All board files are available if you want t have boards made
-
put 100 ohms on the output of the pot to the amplifier.
-
When you are trying to sell a used 20 year old amp for $5k what do you Expect. It is a great amp but not for very low sensitivity headphones
-
what? I can't answer 2 things in one post? yeah multiquote, but i'm lazy.

10 lb dog and brushing teeth... Usually requires 3 people. The dog usually wins. The rubber thing with the spikes that you put on your finger seems to do the best job and the dog does not fight as much. especially if you use really sweet toothpaste.

The output stage is all by itself and has a capacitor coupled input to that stage. So unless both output tubes short plate to cathode, its pretty unlikely that any damage to the headphones can happen. But anything can happen. protection circuits are a good idea, but the one on the srm007t was way to sensitive. Obviously since there is going to be a version 2 of the electra, craig says the new autobias front end fixes the distortion problem. I don't believe that. Not with 6sn7 tubes anyway. GSX2 sounds absolutely wonderful on my hd800. One of my all time favorites.
-
no matter how well the input tube sections are matched to each other, over a period of time, usually less than 6 weeks, the thing drifts so much there is significant distortion. stupid fucking design. and the output tapped inductor is not sufficient for wide band audio reproduction. Too small a core and not enough wire.

Mikhail... All singlepower extremes burned up their transformers. Once you put a real transformer on it, sounds great. ES1 and ES2, output tubes deliberately biased at -160 volts causing maximum VPSS voltage swing to be 800v. Very grim. all high voltage versions of the dynamic amps. major stupidity. singlepower squarewave. no heatsinks, burns up. But the fixed version is kickass for cheap. Rudistor silver plated copper wire reinforcement of hand etched circuit boards. major clusterfuck boxes of boxes of boxes. one of which is a resistor (current source) in a box with a fan headroom all the early stuff was built well and sounded like crap. very poor performance. (sorry tyll) sennheiser hev60 what a horrible design and their new $2k thing is a poor sounding piece of crap cavalli liquid fire, take a standard circuit, replace front end with tubes, output stage with mosfets. Then deliberately limit the available output current. Major clusterfuck liquid gold take a standard circuit and shrink both power supply voltages and number of output devices. and claim that it is true balanced. but to make sure, add real piece of crap buf634 driving drv134 to make unbalanced into balanced to drive it.

Both of them seem to be GES clones. The second one is 6fq7 as the output tubes. Not sure what the 7 pin output tubes are.

At least 200 phone calls with Mikhail trying to get him to see the errors of his ways. We all know how that turned out. There is a lot of money behind cavalli and they are going to succeed by trying to do every thing in the ray samuels playbook, plus lots of things in the advanced edition. Cavailli has taken paid for shills to a new level. Ray would be proud.

Megatron Electrostatic Headphone Amplifier
kevin gilmore replied to kevin gilmore's topic in Do It Yourself
What position are you going to put the 12bh7 in? May have to change the resistors in te cathode bias a bit. The megaton has lower distortion at higher levels than the Electra or the Wes. In fact it's lower distortion and a much wider Frequency response than some of the solid state amps out there. -
Yep the real deal. I have 2 rolls left, about 3000 feet total. Great stuff, massively thick silver plating on copper with Teflon insulation. The date on the roll really is 1955. Very heavy compared to current stuff. Not the crap whiplash was using.

Teflon wires for the win. Justin is using Teflon wire now!
