There's something wrong in Colorado...

Absolutely correct. Put those top screws in pronto. Take apart from the bottom. You may not like what you see. -
Official Head-Case Thread to help fix Icarium's SP amp

i'll donate this to the cause, i'll even pay for shipping. I can find bigger ones if necessary -

Ray having the worst day in his entire life would never let something like this out the door. Nor would he make even the slightest attempt to build it in the first place. Fact is that a single open frame linear power supply would actually cost a fair amount less than the pile of crap that is in that power supply. And you could still add blackgates at the output. Would love to see the insides of the power supply for an ES2. -
Burson Audio discrete headamp.
kevin gilmore replied to Hopstretch's topic in Headphone Amplification
dynalo, dynahi, dynafet, B22 and B24 are all fully discrete opamps. I'm sure that with surface mount resistors i could cram a dynalo into that form factor. -
Some OTL tube amps don't have a built in load (say 10k or so) after the output capacitor. On an amp like this, if you leave the output disconnected for some period of time with the amp on, the cap discharges, then when you plug in the headphones there is a signifcant voltage spike (say 100 volts or more) which can definitely do damage to the heaphones. Singlepower and woo audio amps are known to have output load resistors. Transformer coupled amps are unlikely to have any problems.

Absolutely fedex updates their tracking system on a continuous basis. I tracked the package i got yesterday and 5 minutes after i got it, it showed as being delivered on the website. Every time a package goes in and out of a facility it is tracked. Even if it is shipping ground, it is scanned when it goes into the truck, and when it comes out of the truck. -
Steve Hoffman/Kevin Gray Blue Note Remasters to be Released on SACD!
kevin gilmore replied to Voltron's topic in Music
There is the second set of blue note discs which will evidently overlap the shipping of the first set, and then there is the 20 disc verve set. -

They just magically showed up. Usually i get an email when they ship, but i'm on the subscription for all THREE sets, so evidently they just ship when they can without notice. The subscription works differently than just ordering the discs from the website. And i did listen to all 4 last night. Really good stuff. Hardly what i would call stereo as there are horns to the left, horns to the right, piano always in the middle and drums always on the right... Great music. -

Just got the first 4 discs delivered today. Going to listen to the second disc now. May stay up all night and listen to all of them. The music is just glorious. -

$15.6K for a pair of squarewave boards in a pretty box. A bargain at twice the price. -

I've now seen enough Singlepower amplifiers to last a lifetime. The biggest single cause of failure on every one of the amplifiers is the massively shitty tube sockets. Same sockets on everything mikhail makes. On the ES1/2 units, wiggling the tubes with the power on can very quickly destroy the G2 or plate resistors. Problem is the tube socket is a non-standard size. The hole in the chassis is 1/32 of an inch too small to put in the really good tulip sockets. I've made a special punch to take care of this problem, but done correctly it is still quite a bit of work on the circuit board units, because you have to take the board out first. If you do it from the other direction, it leaves a sharp lip on the top of the chassis. -

Don't think that a credit card is a catchall for stuff like this. I know a person in a business similar to mikhail's (as in retail product) and he gets chargebacks all the time. And he spends the time to prove that he shipped the product (always ships signature required) and 95% of the time, the chargebacks are canceled. The credit card companies want to make sure their vendors are kept happy, otherwise no one would accept credit cards. -
you have to be careful with the 75 to 300 ohm transformers, some of them actually have a common ground. You don't want those. This is the right thing DIGITAL CATV ISOLATOR but i have seen them for only $9.95...

What's up with dynafet boards these days?
kevin gilmore replied to Icarium's topic in Do It Yourself
but a matched pair of duals (a pair of pnp's matched to a pair of npn's) is much harder to come by as bipolar. Also there is the input bias thing for bipolar inputs. None of this is really a problem for me, as i'm using some expensive matched quads right now. But at $43 per front end, not really for the diy'ers. -

You will fall for it sooner or later. Who is to say that AC power from the wall is analog. Many of the el-cheapo UPS's available don't put out anything even close to a sine wave. Much more like a stepped square wave. And the new series of really expensive stuff (like the emerson/liebert units) actually use some very high frequency as a pwm wave to make the output look like 60 hz sine waves. And in doing so, they reduce the size and weight almost a factor of 3. A unit i just installed today weighs less than 100 lbs and puts out 6kw. Virtually all of the newest units in the 20kw to 100kw range now do this as compared to the older ferrups units that make sinewaves with a very large transformer. Sooner or later if you put solar panels on your house, you would be very interested in the much higher efficiency these things can do. -
35 watts per channel ultra linear. Modification board from van-alistine used to be avaiable, may still be available. I remember when these were available new for $75.

You have seen the USB turntables right??? Some of them are quite expensive. A/D conversion, then RIAA in the digital domain... Ummmm... those ICEpower amps sure sound pretty nice for the average J6P and even for some of the non-average types. what about those new ionovac things that run on a 50khz square wave... hdmi connectors won't fit thru a standard garden hose... Also won't fit thru a standard conduit either, which is why i'm using hdmi to dual ethernet converters. -

Well it makes sense right?? isolated ultra speed digital delivered to the amplification device. true analog step attenuator after the dac controlled by the CEC channel. No ground loops ever. No more stupidass discussion of expensive interconnects... Of course we will still have power cords to argue about, but i see that finally taking a back seat to everything else. -

Yep the end of analog! Most people aren't paying attention that from now on, all audio, not just the surround sound stuff is going to be digital delivered over hdmi. Things are going to change and there is going to be lots of new product. With lots of bugs. -

still waiting for linear systems (or anyone else) to get off their asses and start selling dual matched complimentary front end fets. After that, lots of new stuff. Of course the world really does change in the middle of february. -

Its called ONSTAR. More than a car phone. In your neck of the woods, on every single SAAB for the last few years. The point to point units are really the only ones easily repairable in the future. Elphas, where is your second amplifier... -

this is the post in question FS: Singlepower ES-1 - Head-Fi: Covering Headphones, Earphones and Portable Audio tyrion should contact that person directly and see what his answer is. then i will post what others have said that person said. But here is one of them That amp, like all the other ES1's out there definitely does have a problem and will need repair for sure. The person above is giving out my name, work, home and car phone numbers, and mailing address. Without my permission. Jude received a copy requesting that this person cease and desist, but if he has done something it has had no effect. In any case, circuit board mpx3 versions where the parts have burned most of the way thru the circuit board cannot be fixed reliably. Pictures can certainly be provided. Looks like i'm in the singlepower repair buisness. People are evidently getting a great deal. -

For stuff priced at these levels, A single set of mil-spec amphenol connectors should be what is used. No way to plug it in wrong. Here is a better one though. How about every single box has no ventilation whatsoever, and some of the units internally dissipate 30 or more watts. Its the reason the circuit boards are turning brown from heat. -

Some companies are run by selfless, fearless, morons in birthday suits. Or at least barely fitting underwear. Beat you to it i did early retirement in just over 4 months... (if i wanna)
