I wouldn't hate Sony as much as I would hate the jackasses that came out with dualdisc. It should have been pretty obvious that making a new disc that is thicker than cd's and dvd's would cause issues.
Very cool news Tyll, based on my previous experience with amps going from the interstil buffers to diamond buffers the improvements should be rather dramatic. And I'll keep hoping for a standalone version of the Max Dac
I think for the most part every piece of gear I own and have owned have been bought blind. There just really isn't a way to demo most of this stuff before hand. Meets can be useful for getting a basic idea of how something might sound but thats about it. I think the 650s are the only thing I had heard prior to buying them. At least for the most part I've been quite happy with my blind purchases so I guess it all worked out.
I would certainly check audiogon for some used cdp's, but for something new the Onix cdp's are pretty nice for their price. You might also want to consider getting a DAC instead, you should be able to pick up a used ack dack v1 for under $500 with no problem.
I agree with grandenigma on the "high-end portable" people really over-emphasis how good they are. They serve their purpose of being portable amps but they can't compete with good home amps. I think alot of this also comes down to source material as well, the improvements you get from an amp (portable or home) are only as great as the source allows.
Nope but the extra large display is pretty handy if your sitting across the room and no definetly not an emphaisized high end. Might have the most non-fatiuging high end I've heard. I'll post more impressions later. Maybe some comparisons with my modded philips too
