  1. Not only that, but it actually isnt really designed correctly. There is a resistor, I believe its 120 ohms (might be 240 ohms), that is connected to the headphone output. The reason being is that it reduces hum with low impedance cans like grados, because power supply hum leaks through to the output and you can hear it. However, now that your output impedance is overly high on the the grados the bass sounds rubbery and the overall sound is very loose with somewhat bloated bass. So Craigs version would have an external power supply, run the output directly from the transformer taps, and not have to rely on using a high resistor on the output to reduce hum and noise, thus keeping damping factor high even with low impedance cans.
  2. BTW - Craig was supposed to be building a 300b transformer coupled amp but apparently it didnt pan out or maybe he got sidetracked - go figure. Sometimes he builds one of something and forgets about making it commercial. You might want to ask him about it and see whats up. His goal was to make a 300b that was better than the cary for about half the price, something along those lines.
  3. I really loved the sound of the L3000's out of my moth 2a3, so jpak I think going with Craig would be a good idea. Craig apparently knows how to design decent stuff so you should be okay Transformer and OTL is really a preference thing. In the end, I think I really preferred the sound of the moth 2a3 over the Zana. The Zana is dead neutral and more "accurate" but the transformer coupled moth has a warmer, fuller, tone, the whole cliched debate of "accuracy" vs "musicality" if you wish to go there. Tango iron is no longer available, they went out of business, you might be able to score a set on ebay but you know how that story goes. If you have the dough audionote iron should be at least near the same level. Craig likes the electraprint iron, which he used for his moth amps, and since he already has a connection with Jack from electraprint he would be able to arrange getting you some custom iron made. I believe Craig told me that the HD2 with electraprint transformers comes very very close to jp #'s with the tango. I think ER's idea of B52 cut in half is also a great option! You could cut it in half and donate the other half to postjack or something to include with his giant blackgate he was planning on building. Or maybe you should just get a raptor. Oh wait same thing... ...damn it, you've won this round...
  4. Well guys can't say I didn't try and warn him...as you were
  5. todd, I am not sure if you have had the chance to read some of the threads here on headcase, but lets just say the culture here is a bit "different." I would stop while you are ahead
  6. That cat is badass
  7. You didn't know? It is rich in HGH man, its the new thing.
  8. Yeah he is totally chill and nonchalant about that, I seriously believe this experience has damaged his soul. That is some f'd up shit. That story with the sorority girl, man thats hardcore, not a single sound?
  9. Dude why you have to out me like that here on a public forum? I will leave negative feedback later.
  10. I concur. I almost think they are gay to be honest with you. There was one guy who put posters of chicks on his front door to his door room. Are you trying to hide something buddy? Girls don't dig that stuff, they like beer and chocolate and shit, music posters are the way to go too.
  11. Well, our wireless router may have kicked the bucket. One of the lower ended netgears I believe. Looking for something reasonably priced that won't break down on me in a year, and gets the job done. Thanks guys
  12. LOL dude that is such an asian thing, we never used AC growing up in our house (Anak!!! NO AC, we have no money!)
  13. That's a shame. Probably the reason why he didnt bother coming to the Chicago Meet I hosted. He was invited and asked, but declined. I figured why would he bother with lowly Chicago peeps since it could be perceived he has this market dominated. But a lot of people were looking for him and wondering why he wasn't there, its not his obligation to be there but would have been nice for the other guys.
  14. I'm with elnero on this one, and agree with his very nicely put impressions above. I understand how we all hear different and how different things come into our perception of sound, but man those ety's kill me, really bright sounding to my ears. The E500's have a more natural tone with more weight to the sound, they do somewhat remind me of cleaner, more detailed senns. Regardless, those two are on the opposite side of the aural spectrum for sure.
  15. I would guess the computer/Best buy part of Klipsch (unfortunately). They should make a high end headphone, I bet it would sound like a better Grado. Go old school vintage klipsch, wooden housings, horn loaded driver, totally overkill Of course it might weight like 20 pounds, but hey, we've handled HP-1000's whats another 15 or so going to hurt
  16. I think Billy's point is that essentially tweaking through IC's, tubes, etc. is sort of like EQ'ing the sound. In the end, is there really that much you need for simple musical enjoyment? There are some stupidly simple ways out there to get good sound without all the fuss, and if you know how to handle an EQ you can really lock in the sound you want. I haven't heard any powered speakers so I can't comment but if there was a cheap powered speaker that sounded decent, I am sure it would be a nice rig for someone on a low budget
  17. Yes Clerks 1, let's move on to the random star wars references now please
  18. Clerks? I am guessing Clerks 2...
  19. Yeah, but since I really like the PS-1's and grado in general, those impressions are more in line with how I hear things than from, say a K340 fanboy
  20. Good impressions - random question aerius, why were you banned again? Would have been nice to continue to have your input on the boards over there for sure.
  21. Well, I am looking for a new set of headphones. There is a modded set currently for sale, based on various impressions I am interested. My favorite cans have always been the HP-1000's and L3000's. I have also owned and enjoyed the Senns 600 and 650's, RS-1's both new and vintage stock, PS-1's. Would love to hear all of your thoughts on the K340's and how they compare to what I am familiar with.
  22. Arrrg...you've won this round...
  23. Dude its a sky hook, that was his signature move. Kind of like Jordan's reverse lay-ups.
  24. Even to a skeptic, the difference in sound for 200 or so bucks is at least on the same level as a power cord or sheets of ERS paper.
  25. opamps as is already have low amount of measured distortion. One more exponent to the 10th power shouldnt be anything more.
