Official Head-Case Audio Confessional (post your (audio)sins here)
recstar24 replied to n_maher's topic in Miscellaneous
I am not sure if the HD800 will absolve my affliction for the wonderful drug that is known as HP1000. Billy said he would let me have a sniff though when it comes in...though who knows what he will ask for in return:p -

Its like crack - every time I am able to weane myself off of it, I end up coming back. I need to go to Hp1000 rehab for real:palm: everytime she leaves me, the itch just comes back and I end up scratching it:palm: -

Forgive me, senor postjack, as I am currently on my 5th round with the HP1000's. I simply never learn to let them go, or to not let them go. Pray that this will truly be my last time with them:p -
You wouldn't happen to have a model # or pic by chance, would you? I plan on going there in a bit, but would be helpful to their staff if I could give them some kind of direction. This is the one I found from Lowes for $30: Here is the pelican on Nate linked to: The pelican is about 2x as much though.
-
The best I found so far online is from the local pelican dealer up north for $75 with free UPS shipping. There is one on amazon for $57 but with $17 shipping pretty much same thing. If anyone knows of anything cheaper, great. If not, I will go ahead and bite on this before the end of the day:p EDIT: There is a couple of stock direct from amazon for $61 with their free saver shipping.

Hey guys, Do you have any ideas/recommendations/links to a nice, sturdy, protective case for my hp2's to store when not in use? I searched and saw what postjack used, a quantary camera case, but seemed a bit bulky and overkill. Though it looked nice, and you could cut out the foam. I saw something like this on HF in the pic below, up top: That seems to fit it perfectly, and not be as tall as the one postjack used.

What other customs options are there? I know Westone has a couple. By all accounts the UE10's seem they would fit my bill. Though I should say I have never had comfort issues with the universals though my experience with them is limited. Customs are just so pimp though:palm:
-
I am definitely in the custom camp (unless you think there is a universal that can match them in fit, comfort, and sound). I am leaning towards UE 10's. I think I would prefer their more linear sound signature than the 11's, and they are cheaper. How is the UE sound compared to the shure sound? I have owned e5's, listened to e500's, and both while nice were somewhat bassy and dark sounding, not enough clarity in the mids and highs. The e4's were a bit crisper but lacked enough body and bass for me.

What options are currently out there for hi end iem's? I do not want to bother going through the HF thread. Please chime in if you have any thoughts or experiences to share. All I am aware of are the UE customs.

Wow that is insane. But your ice storms were truly epic. The friday before break was cancelled, which I believe was the 1st school cancellation in my district the past 10 years, so the district has a policy of trudging on if humanly possible. I think ice and severe cold weather are more severe and provide more grounds for school cancellation than snow itself. Sorry for the off topic:palm: -

Nate = hero Here in Chicagoland area it is supposed to be pretty bad. Blowing snow storms with hard winds. Real subzero degree weather, especially with tomorrow. Fingers crossed for school cancellation:p -
That would be the best thing ever...except if you were one of the ebay winners:p

^^^ Pretty much agree with everything said and sums up very well where I stand currently. The bass response will be the biggest question I have. It can be concluded that its faster than the 650 (though not that hard to do). I have never criticized the scope and size of the 650 soundstage, just the cohesiveness, as it does come out somewhat blobby even on heroic amplification IMO. So like you said, I am super curious at the aspect. As for the pricepoint, I think it will represent more a ceiling than a floor. Though there is a demand for a $1000+ hi end headphone in our niche market, I think pushing it beyond $2000 becomes unfeasible to sennheiser as a company and the bottom line (or any other manufacturer). I think $2000 economically speaking is the absolute threshold for a hi end can, where a company can still make some money. Sennheiser has already sold 70 or so to Tyll and Todd, I would imagine Todd will pick up a bit more from his original 10, and who knows what the orders are like for the other dealers. If the pricepoint was north of $2000 I don't see that occuring, but Tyll could elaborate if he wished as he is the business guy not me. You can see what the pricepoint is doing though. The people that actually can afford the can are excited for it to come out and look forward to either purchasing or auditioning. The people that can't afford it, or they are relatively new and unexperienced in headfi, are finding multiple ways to bitch about it. There will probably be people who can't afford it, but feel like they need to have it, so they will buy it from Tyll and return it within 30 days because they realize they shouldn't be spending money when they actually don't have it (JK Tyll). That leaves us, IMO, with a hiend can that will eventually belong to the hi-end users.

Makes sense...I do think that Tyll and Jude's impressions still have a sense of validity to them, or at minimum are more valid than your typical headfier. Though it appears Edwood's overall impression is similar to them, so I think all 3 combined confirms that the initial impressions are not only valid, but quite positive. I am glad he commented on the bass response as well.
-
I think its a smart move - another source of revenue for wavelength. Happens in business all the time, a company that you are competing with is also a major supplier or customer as well.
-
Ah that makes sense, I got that same feeling as well. Damn you Tyll you hypester.
-
Damn, it might actually be possible that I could dig these.... ...waiting for Billy's set to arrive in chicagoland to take a listen:p

tyll, Your dope:p Your on my top 5 list of people to rock out with.

Which hypersters are you referring to? The only people that have posted have been Tyll and Jude primarly. Are you implying that their impressions aren't objective first impressions of what they are hearing? Bostonears did post his impressions which actually were somewhat even keeled. From reading his post it appears he finds the 650 and 800 to actually be somewhat similar sounding. However his listening experience is colored by his own, apparent limited background in hifi so it seems. I would understand your statement if these were in the hands of a whole bunch of newbs, but Tyll and Jude shouldn't be associated with that group. From the very limited information that we have so far, the hd800 sounds like it is faster and more impactful than the hd650 but probably has a similar tonality (this is evident by bostonears impressions, and IMO most beginning/lower level listeners have an easier time describing and hearing the overall balance and tonality of cans).
