Anti static mat (cork rubber) with anti static brush not enough? Honest question, no snark implied.
-
It's been a week and have to say I'm really digging this vinyl thing. Have ordered a good chunk of new vinyl mixed in with some nice used bargain finds, like the bill Evans above. Tried to keep my uturn somewhat minimal, went with ortofon om5e and internal preamp, hooked to my emotiva dc1 and powering stealth 6's (no cue lever! Haha). Really happy with the sound, the cart tracks really well, and have gotten some pretty clean vinyl so far I guess next question are accessories...looking at the spin clean manual record washer, but I don't think I have enough records to really warrant a cleaning system yet. Just picked up an audio quest brush and got a cork/rubber mat coming from turntable lab tomorrow. Using the magic eraser trick for stylus cleaning, thing freaking works. Will probably just focus on getting more vinyl lol.

Today I was in the area of our old house, when Lo and behold a used record store just opened down the block. Really nice guys that were easy to talk to and super helpful. Found a great looking bill Evans 180g for $5, and picked up cat Stevens tea for the tillerman for $3, copy looked untouched. Asked for phoebe snow, one of the guys didn't think we had any, but one of the workers overheard me and pulled out her 2nd album while he was sorting some records, $2. Finally found a copy of Beatles love songs but appeared to have a pressing issue on final track. Asked guys to play it on system and it skips, ask nicely if they can give me a discount and $6 later its mine. So yes this was a lot of fun and the records are super clean and quiet and just great music.

Anyone familiar with this, or cleaners that are similar? https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002UKSZUU/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1484451252&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=record+cleaner&dpPl=1&dpID=51tIhDTsASL&ref=plSrch

True a decent record brush should do the trick, no? Bookmarked! All those places look and sound great, I've been to Reckless before but that was a while ago. And yes Garcias.

This basically captures where I am at with this whole vinyl journey that is about to start. It's less about nostalgia and it's definitely not about audiophile-ishness or sound quality, but more the listening process and experience. With that said, today I was able to get away from the house a bit to check out a record store in downtown wheaton which is a very close suburb to where we are currently at. Wheaton/Glen Ellyn is a more affluent suburb generally speaking and the prices this place was charging for their new stuff was reflective of that lol. Even their used "vintage" stuff was somewhat outrageous, but I was able to score clean used copies of McCartney/Wings Speed of sound, Ringo's debut solo album, and Steely Dan's Gaucho for a few bucks. Was able to check out quality on their listening station and make sure things weren't all warped or beat up, and they were super clean and quiet, but a few others I pulled were terrible lol. I will say I did enjoy this process but it's something that I normally do not have the time or energy to do consistently. I ended up going on soundstagedirect online and got me some new radiohead vinyl, moon shaped pool and Kid A (both were $10-$15 more expensive at the store, ouch) and a coldplay album for the wife (yeah I know). tl;dr I bought some vinyl!

For those vinyl users, what online vendors do you use and trust? This would be for mostly new releases, I've got a few places around here that have bargain used bins but mostly the older stuff.

Thread revival! Finally ordered something lol. I went with a blue uturn, ortofon OM5E and built in phono. Will hook up to existing emotiva DC1 thingy and emotiva actives. Didn't bother with the acryllic platter even though IT LOOKS SO PRETTY, nor the cue lever, because I am a big boy and can manually drop my needle nice and gently.

Thanks dusty. Maybe I'll just stop and play them a bit. Definitely love the look and body shape though.

How are the PRS acoustics? Local music store carries them and may look at getting one for my first acoustic

Damn it do I need to get back into headphones again? Sounds like the perfect can for me.

Yeah that would be easy to do yourself, just using a digital tuner like an app. I aim for something around 3-5 cents under where it's barely under the threshold of hearing it, but it's there. Rather than the G above D, you can mess with the B above G - because G is going to be the native tuning and key of what I am sure is a good chunk of what you play, having the G slightly under might sound off, but the third above that, the B, just a little so under can make things sound more natural and rounder.
-
To my ears, the sweetened turnings are really truly soured tunings. Most ive encountered have one string that is purposefully a few cents under, which to the ear makes it sound natural. On the ukulele, the tuning is GCEA, but the E is just ever so slightly under. I've found that the major third above the root tuning, my ear tends to prefer it to be slightly under, rather than slightly sharp which irritates me.

you should! I believe in the physics of it, can't hurt.

Family style backpack for first trip to Disney!

Nate, picked up a mountain hardware enterprise, probably the nicest bag we've ever had. Thanks bud for the rec. -
So the Peterson strobe tuner is worth it eh? I have the expensive ass iPhone app and purchased a few of the sweetened turnings, can't say I've messed with it enough to determine if it's better than my snark or my instuner app. I do like the flashing epileptic strobe indicator though.

Family style backpack for first trip to Disney!

Thanks Nate. We do plan on renting some kind of bob-type stroller for sure. No way we are letting these kids tire out too fast and get all whiny. Did not think about a little soft cooler! thanks for the bag rec! I've done Disney as a kid and as a teacher chaperone but never as a parent! -
Hello, this saturday day we are flying out for our first family trip to Disney world - Molly (age 5) and Myles (age 3) do not know yet, so don't say anything. The wife has appointed me to find a nice backpack that will hold all the typical little kids survival tools that will be needed - snacks, juice, rain ponchos, electronics, etc. I would love to know what you guys are using for family trips, this would be a backpack I would wear big enough to hold a bunch of stuff without being too bulky.

not quite. Ebony, I believe Macassar ebony to be exact. The reddish brown stripes do give it that BRW look though.
