  1. Finally settled on rca coax reason: Illuminati D60
  2. What's the size of your power supply? I like to get an x2 card but I don't think my PS can take it. I am running a water-cooled tower on a 480W Antec, with CPU Q6600/8GB mem/NV 9800 GPU all OCed and 4 750G HD.
  3. Has anyone compared running HD800 in SE from a 3 channel b22 with running balanced from a balanced b22? Contemplating HD800, but don't really want to upgrade to a balanced amp unless necessary. (if the difference is the last 2% I am not gonna bother with it)
  4. nice bait..I will bite Couple questions have been bugging me since I started thinking about digital cables. On the most basic level, the signal inside the cable is modified by the reflection, and can be expressed as V1(z) = V0 (e^(-jbz) + Ghe* e^(jbz)); and the signal as it passed into the DAC can be expressed as V2=tau*V0*e^(-jbz), where tau = 1+ Ghe. Ghe = (Z2 (medium 2; digital interface) - Z1 (digital cable))/(Z2+Z1) So if you have no reflection whatsoever going back into digital cable from the DAC, Ghe = 0, so V1 is the same as V2. So if this is calculable, it must be measurable, the question is what does it sound like? If there is a difference which connector (BNC/XLR/RCA) can achieve the lowest Ghe value?
  5. that was my reply to a question asking if I had tried different cables using the above mentioned connectors (based on what I have and what I heard, XLR was the softer one). I don't know where you get the idea that all XLR sound softer than all coax -> I am not so stupid as to make that assertion based on my limited sampling of cables with an even more limited supply of sources.
  6. nope; I have no access to Ayre's proprietary schematics. I was paraphrasing my various conversations with Ayre technical service ppl and some comments from Hansen. My ears also tell me that's the case.
  7. I missed he was using Glite for this comparison. Using SE on an Ayre equipment is like running M5 with 5 cylinders turned off. Still better than most, but it's no monster. looking forward to Asr's in-depth review.
  8. There is a difference between RCA and XLR, with XLR being the softer sounding of the 2. The one concern I have with toslink is that I have a number of 24/96 files and that's almost at the limit of toslink transmitter/receiver bandwidth. So is my best option BNC -> RCA (I know there will be a little reflection from the DAC due to the RCA connector)?
  9. What's the best method of connecting transport to DAC via either spdif or aes/ebu encoding, in real life? I have the option of doing one of the following (from transport -> DAC): 1. BNC 75 -> RCA ~75 2. RCA ~75 -> RCA ~75 3. XLR 110 -> XLR 110 4. toslink -> toslink I have been going through my emag book and coax is theoretically the perfect medium at transmitting high-frequency signals over a length of 1M. I have been trying different combination with blue jeans cable, and they all sound different. So what's objectively the best connection in the real world?
  10. Thanks for your valuable impression. Did you by any chance run your Ayre balanced? What type of power cable did you use? I have had my Ayre amps for a long time and they like to run balanced and they like good power cables. I had a C7xe over for a short while and tried both SE and balanced outputs, and there was a huge difference between the 2 outputs. Knowing Ayre, they are sensitive to balanced config and input power. Your impression sounded like you were running it in SE, although I could be wrong.
  11. hey, if someone wants to mock my post (that's totally fine with me), at least they can do so without logic fallacies and/or math errors.
  12. does it come with an antenna?
  13. I assume you will report any gain as "ordinary income"
  14. 2 headphones with 3 versions each right? Headphone A ver1 Headphone A ver2 Headphone A ver3 Headphone B ver1 Headphone B ver2 Headphone B ver3 total 6 versions.
  15. driver version Based on my limited knowledge, there are black-cloth and white-cloth versions for both headphones. I don't remember people mentioning any other version.
  16. what you really wanted to say was 6 since 8 makes no sense at all. n items with m versions = n*m , and not n^m
  17. Just out of curiosity, have ppl here compared the new versions of both headphones? I assume there are 2 versions out there, unless you tell me I am wrong.
  18. I had my HD600 for over 2 yrs before selling it in favor of HD650. IMO HD650 has a more engaging and transparent midrange (you can probably tell I am big on midrange performance), which was, at the time, enough for me to give up HD600. Both are non-offending. HD600 is probably just a had quicker at the extremes. Although the latest HD650 revision probably makes that a moot point.
  19. Does Audio-gd use non-fused power supply for their DACs?
  20. that sucks. You can't blame people for not wanting to invite little kids to come onto their property in troves .....unnecessary liability and litigation happy culture and all..
  21. I am reading my ECD1 tech spec from the manual. Output level (unbalanced) - 2.45V Output level (balanced) - 4.9V Max output (balanced) - > 14Vrms Output impedance - 40Ohm This corresponds to what I am hearing.
  22. I will do that. Do I measure Vrms with 1khz wave at 0db?
