If you get the chance to try it on... PPA V1 or V2 M
-
I happen to think the HP-1 and YH-1 are the best Yamahas in stock form except for the YH-1000. To me the YH-100 absolutely needs modding, but has more to gain from modding than all the other Yamaha drivers. That said I still prefer a modded HP-1/YH-1 to stock. Thanks Jay, I knew we could count on you for a sperm donation.

Well said. I don't think the point is to try to replicate the stat sound, which we know is an effort in futility. The point is to get some of those characteristics plus some very musical, lush, full sound with the addition of strong bass extension at a fraction of the price of the big stats. To my mind the Ortho sound is a great meld of some of the stat and dynamic signatures. What it does well, it does very well, and at a price that's still a relative bargain.

And then when the house catches fire and goes up in minutes, call me to rebuild it.

Yes the Rega RB300 is an excellent value IMO, and it mates quite well with the also excellent valued Denon DL-103. I'd recommend the Hagerman Bugle phono stage. This will give you an excellent little spinning rig IMHO.

Then again there's the stand they requested. Who knows?

Sweet Smeggy! Hey wualta, good to see you over here.

Smeggy, Could I get you to post some pics of your modded RP18 here? I'd love to see it!

"Near-Field Speaker: a compact studio monitor designed for listening at close distances, typically between three and five feet. When sitting at this near-field distance, the listener hears a greater proportion of direct sound from the monitors (compared to the reflected sound bouncing around the room) so, in theory, the effects of poor room acoustics are greatly reduced." Since nearfield listening basically derives from the studio environment, I'd call this definition fairly accurate. But generally it also involves desktop placement.

I missed that, any link?

Does it tell time?

I'll second the Paradigm, however I love the MoFi monitor, and bargains are easy to come by... AudiogoN ForSale: Mobile Fidelity OML-1 This is a very nuetral monitor and IME does not need to be placed far from walls.

I agree that seal is key. The velour Beyer pads were terrible. I just wasn't sure how dense the Grado foam would be or how it would seal. I wonder if a rubber coating on the face of the foam pads would be worthwhile? I guess it would just be easier to try a known quantity and go with pleather pads. The Goldring frame fit me very well, but I have a small head. Good thing too, because the NADs just fit at the end of their adjustment. They must have been designed for toddlers? No more Beta22?

Yeah point taken, but I had to post it because it is after all a Cello, and Mark Levinson was my hero. I'm sure even Mark could not make the GS1000 sound like a flagship product. I know nothing of Lain, or anime for that matter, but that is cool Fitz. It looks like there are way too many strings on her guitar however. Maybe its shadows.

So I just reread this entire thread (a bit easier to do than the HF thread), and a few things I need to log down for posterity are... 1) Marc is a fickle bastard, and he's always moving on to new things. So if he sells the T50 V1 without giving me first dibs, I'm sending -= Germania =- to wreck his marriage. 2) I need to get off my ass and make an SFI woody. How would a Grado based headband mechanism and custom woody housing sound with the SFIs and the giant foam GS1000 pads? I have no idea how the foam pads would do with planars, but I'd like to try. 3) My penis is very respectable! In fact it's been stored away for 15 years now just to gain back said respectability.

I'll check into it. You know it would be fun to ship you the Donut MkII and have you try them. Then you could also compare the L3000 pad to the OII pad before I drop $140.00 on a set. The MkII uses the YH-100 driver, and is now damped better IMO than the first gen. Donut. They're prettier too. Tomek? I've seen pics, and they do indeed seem to have some type of fabric pads. I assure you they are in no way original equipment, and I'm quite certain he'd get a big jump in SQ if he'd replace them with a suitable pleather/leather donor. He may be under the idea that they are stock pads, but as an original YH-1000 former owner I'm in the know.

Real men just build their own.

Where can I purchase a set of the new Black pads for the 007 MkII? Definitely pleather, just like the YH-100. Hardly anyone was doing leather back then. Yeah the Beyer pads left a lot to be desired. The L3000 get your ear closer to the driver, and are almost a cross between circumaural and supra-aural.

"Do you really want to hurt me? Do you really want to make me cry?"

But even then, why?

Nice snag Sherwood! She's purty too!

So in my recent trade with antonyfirst on HF, Tony sent me some extra felt to play with. He sent some really dense Purple felt and some Blue Cashmere felt that he'd had great success with in the NAD RP18. He sent other felt as well that I haven't tried yet. Before damping the NADs I wanted to get really familiar with them, so instead tonight I redamped my Chocolate Donut MkII. I used the dense felt at the back of the cup followed by the Yamaha Yellow foam, then the Cashmere Blue felt next to the driver with a 1/2" paper reflex dot centered on the backside of the Blue felt. Let me start by saying that I've always fealt that Skylab's YH-100 based Strawberry Donuts had a bit deeper bass than mine, and I was never quite sure why. Well now I've definitely picked up a little deeper bass with this redamp. From memory I'd say it's about the same as Rob's Donuts. But the surprise was the added sparkle in the upper register. I have to think the reflex dot is responsible for this. I think this redamp is a raging success, but I was saddened that I had used too much of the Cashmere felt to be able to use it in the NAD redamping when the time comes. However after a quick search on the net I found a fabric store selling a yard of Cashmere felt for $5.95. Yes Cashmere felt! It's some closeout sale, but the good news is that I can't possibly use anywhere near that much myself. So once it arrives and I'm able to judge it, I'll have plenty to pass along.

I'd have to say the Yamaha YH-1000 would be closest to the OII. The YH-1000 has better bass however, but it's all mute because a pair just sold on ebay for $1000.00. That's just looney IMO. I bought them new in '82 for $150.00. I'm going to try this new Cashmere felt that I got from an Italian member in my YH-100 based Donut soon. I think I'll also try a reflex dot to bring the highs out a tad more. I'll have to get Marc to let me try his OII pads on them, but I absolutely love the L3000 pads on them.

No, not at all, but disappointment is a valid response when your order had been accepted and you thought you had a K601 on the way.
