Post the last thing you bought!
The donkey show isn't all it's cracked up to be. I saw one in Matamoros when I was in college. I puked. Marc, nice saw buddy! I may end up farming out some re-saw work to you. Nate, nice saw as well. I'm as happy when my buddies buy tools, as I am when I buy them. Didn't see that one coming.

It might be a good idea to introduce yourself first. Read your welcome PM, it'll save you lots of grief.

What did you do today?
I experienced my first military funeral when my own Father died five years back. It is indeed an emotional experience. Sorry for your loss.

What are you listening to Part Two
Love him or hate him (I happen to love him), he really does have a voice that lends itself to many genres. There are a few real standouts here...'You Make Me Feel Brand New' with Mary J. Blige, 'Tracks Of My Tears' with Smokey and 'Let It Be Me' with Jennifer Hudson.

Listening through the Krell KAV-400xi now. This is the very definition of synergy! This amp rocks my socks! If the F5 is at all similar in sound sig. I'll be a very happy guy. If not a 400xi is in my future. 400xi + Maggies would put a perpetual smile on Dr. Woods face.

Actually it's a Fitz Black Clover cable, I'm listening now. Very nice! I'm driving them with the β22 now, will switch over to the Krell later. These are balanced the way I like them, not sure the treble is hot enough for Marc, but to my ear they're just right. I'll get used to them for a few days before playing with the damping. Again, nice work Don!

Audeze LCD-1 just landed!
Every properly damped ortho I've listened to needed lots of power. I doubt the Xcan would even come close to opening the LCD-1 up.

Only a Lawyer could get a Dentist to make a house call. Glad your bone has been pulled out...erm, uhm, you know what I mean.

Audeze LCD-1 just landed!
Hmmm, I wouldn't call the pair I heard (Tony's) as overly midbassy, but I imagine what's upstream could play a big role in that. From the β22/Original CDP they were very well balanced. From memory (25 years ago) the YH1000 was indeed the best Ortho out of the box. I'd love to tweak one today, but the insane prices will not see that happening. As for the HD800...I found them to be quite a competent headphone when I had them in house, but they lacked emotion for me. I imagine the pairing with the β22 might have been just too dry. I was very impressed with the Audeze LCD-1 that Don modded for Marc!

Very cool Don. How are they terminated?

The Orthodynamic Thread
Ah, so there's the easy, kitchen table project you were alluding to. Can't wait to hear whatever they may be! Are they 4 pin XLR terminated? I hope so. I'll try them on the Krell too.

What are you driving your K1000 with?
I have to make it a point to pic a few things and be sure to listen to them. Otherwise I spend 100% of my time talking.

I would say that dry is an accurate term for the β22. Not overly dry, but I even mentioned it sounds somewhat dry compared to the Krell in post #129. But I would qualify dry as neutral, so I think we're saying the same thing, it's just that I see dry in the middle of the spectrum, and edgy to the left. In either case the more time I spend listening to the Krell, the more I fall in love with it. It really is a superb amp for the K1000, and probably a superb amp period. I don't have speakers worthy of testing that at the moment. At this point it's doing everything right. As I said before bass is not quite as deep as the β22, but I'm talking negligible amounts here. Are you sure you really want it back? As for the box with the work project... send away, I'm game. Also could you send the passive pre-amps? I want to give them a try.

Volcanic eruption here in Iceland
We have them erupt in Alaska on occasion too, but never with fire and lava. Very pretty, glad nobody was injured. Otherwise it's a good thing, relieving crust pressure and such.

Edgy, harsh & shrill come to mind, and the β22 is none of them. My warm comment needs to be taken in comparison to the β22. I certainly would not call the Krell a heavily colored amp by any means. When A/Bed against the β22 however, the more warmish, slightly lush signature is noticeable. I hope you're not taking this as a negative comment, as the Krell is a gorgeous amp, and quite seductive.

FIFY. That's quite nice of you to offer. We'll have to talk.

What are you driving your K1000 with?
The very brief time I had my K1000 plugged into a 300B amp was nothing short of astonishing. At some point it is my desire to find a nice pair of 300B monoblocks. If I can find a worthy pair for under $3000.00 I'll be going down that road sooner than later. As I find the K1000 to be fairly neutral, and the β22 is inarguably neutral, I can understand the desire for a bit of warmth and color. In the end I happen to really enjoy a fairly neutral system. If you'd like to add some warmth though, I'd highly recommend doing so with a nice vinyl spinner. To my ear a good vinyl rig pairs extremely well with the neutrality of my amp and K1000.
