Personally I didn't find the LCD-2 that hard to drive. My guess would be yes it will drive it well enough. I happened to prefer the LCD-2 on SS amps as well. The tube amps I tried (several at CJ) were not as good of a match IMO.

I like the new grills, they look even better IMO. The wood is a really durable hardwood, that should hold up to plenty of usage.

The thing is when they do burn you're well aware of it. You'd smell it and see it upon opening the case. My guess is a simple fix like a fuse or loose connection. Without a TRS jack on my amp any longer, the burning issue is a thing of the past for me. At least one can hope, twice was quite enough. Nugget Audio service is exceptional, as was Luvdunhill Audio!

I was just referring to the fact that they were simple boxes, with no real need for internal bracing or complex angles. I'm a big Walnut fan, and thought Nate might be as well, so I wanted them to be nice.

Granted. I'm specifically talking about speaker amps, where volumes are generally higher, and loads can typically be more difficult. I agree that headphone amps don't require as much headroom, but the idea still applies, just on a smaller scale. FWIW I listen at pretty low volumes, but I do think most orthos do better with reserve power over not enough power. Do I need the balanced Beta 22 to drive the LCD-2?...no, but it certainly doesn't hurt.

As far as function, the basic drywall screws will work great. They're designed with a high shear strength, and therefore tend to break far less often than say stainless steel, those look pretty, but have a low shear strength. Do predrill for the screws with a bit slightly smaller than the screw diameter though.

That's a pretty simplified statement, and I can't agree with that. I've heard plenty of amps that will get loud enough, but then run out of steam on difficult passages. Dynamic headroom is very important IMO, and I'd personally rather have more than enough power than not enough. For example I used to own a pair of ESS AMT 1Ds, with the famous Heil Air Motion Transformers. I powered those speakers for about a year with an NAD 2200 stereo power amp. That amp was conservatively rated at 100 wpc, with pretty respectable dynamic headroom. I thought it sounded great. But when my stereo sales rep offered to bring a second NAD 2200 by and run the pair in bridged mono mode, I was floored at the way the speakers opened up. That was 400 wpc in bridged mode, and I would have thought complete overkill for my ESSs, but I was wrong. I did buy the second NAD on the spot BTW.

Those were just some quick and dirty boxes for a pair of Cicada drivers Nate had. I used that many screws more for the aesthetic than for any other reason. We used a stainless, torx screw that looked pretty cool IMO. Kind of an homage to Harbeth.

Well if you happened to be planning a Port A weekend sometime soon I'd offer my shop to you. Bring Shelly and we'll have a micro meet. You can do it with a palm sander too, but start with about 80 grit paper to sand the bulk away. I stick the foam sheets to the back of the baffle after I've sealed the back of the baffle with lacquer, then screw the baffles in. Maybe Nate has a pic of the boxes I made in the same mannor for him? Oh here's one... You can see all the screw holes I recessed with a countersink bit.

I used to drink Boones Farm when I was 16, because we could get it cheap. Tickled Pink was my favorite, and by favorite I mean the flavor I could actually hold down. That is some gawd awful stuff!
