  1. Good to see you back here Alex, very happy birthday!
  2. Good to at least know the cause, Grahame. Good luck expelling fluids in the future....
  3. RIP Greystone, sorry for your family's loss Larry. Sounds like he had a decent extended life with lots of love for those two years.....
  4. Ditto. Love all the pics, have a great time!
  5. Still sad to see when someone falls like that, Dan....sorry to hear of someone so young wasted away. The irony of Morphine to cure a Heroin OD is not lost on me, if there was irony to have. And yes, I agree with your assessment of Mark's talents, but had no idea of his personality.
  6. ^^ d'oh! I was thinking PC, not Mac.....ignore my SW recommendation if needed......
  7. Haj, I have a Memorex External USB 3.0 writer, unused; it's yours if you want it, PM me. I had two, thought I'd use both, but haven't. Mine works fine, though I don't use it daily..... Also, Ashampoo has a free studio app that supports Blu-Ray burning; not sure of movie playing, but I'm sure there are some out there. I use the free version at work, some ads but easy to ignore.
  8. Very Happy Birthday Dinny! May this coming year be a joyous one with many things bad behind, and all things good ahead!
  9. Yup, they certainly do.... For solid but cheap, I have 3 small bathroom hand towel holders. Hold two phones each, each looks like a simple "T" with a base. They usually run under $20. I picked up two at TJ Maxx for $13 apiece, and one I think at Target, has the aged brown metal look, for perhaps $18.
  10. Yup, but Lunchbox 2 has a hi/low impedance switch.....makes it sound better with more phones. The HP50 sounded pretty good out of it, save for the bass which seemed to sound a touch better with the Meridian. But even the low switch may still be too high for these.....
  11. Don't think Carl has the HP50's, he was talking about the Fio X3 DAP (I partially derailed the thread with a note on that). I got mine at World Wide Stereo, first place online I found them in stock, took PayPal (I had a balance), and had free shipping. http://www.wwstereo.com/NAD-Electronics/Products/?category=Over-the-Ear-Headphones Just as an FYI, liking just about everything about the sound given that it's a closed phone. Still getting used to the feel, though.....
  12. Listening now at work, Yosi Horikawa - Vapor (thanks, Dusty, liking this a lot!). Versus the Fidelio X1, it definitely has better highs; a little airier while still smooth and detailed. The bass is pleasantly surprising. The X1 has a fat and deep bass, but this is holding its opwn quite well; not as fat, but deep enough and actually quite tuneful. The transparency is better than the X1 as well. Perhaps significantly better.....TBD...... As expected, X1's sound more open, but these are no slouches for closed-phone soundstage. X1 has it on comfort easily; but I think I can still wear these for hours. Will use this the rest of the week and swap out the X1 now and then. Barring longer-term comfort, I'm sure these will be my new work cans.
  13. Some good lists here....as with others, the top 5 of any given moment may change. But some of my all-time favorites are (not in order): Joy Division - Closer (Unknown Pleasures a very close second) Chameleons UK - tie for Script Of The Bridge and Strange Times Loreena McKennitt - tie for The Visit and the mask & mirror October Project - s/t Pink Floyd - tie for Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, Animals, and Wish You Were Here Heather Nova - tie for Oyster and Siren
  14. Just got my pair in today. Quick warmup and listen (Fio X-3 -> Digital out to Neko D-100 Mk 2 -> Eddie Current Lunchbox 2) using some 16/44 up to 24/192 FLAC files. First impressions: big and full sounding, fairly well balanced with maybe some lightness to bass (assume it may get better in time). It actually reminded me of many of the good things about Grado's, with a little larger soundstage and a little more evenly balanced. Not as wide open as my Senn 600's coming out of the Lunchbox 2, but still pretty good for a closed phone. Isolation was good, I think these will do quite well at work. Got some good details/transparency out of them, too, thanks likely to the DAC. Comfort was good, not too strong of a clamp, and the insides of the cups didn't rub on my ears (thought they might given their size). Probably not as comfy as the Phillips Fidelio X1's, which have larger, felt earpads. Will compare them at work tomorrow, fed from same FLAC files to the Meridian Explorer, to the X1's I had been using. As a side note: I like this Fio X3 DAP a lot. Some/several things NOT to like, but they matter less to me (menu system especially, and some reported bugs reading LOTS of files - I put exclusively FLAC on with lots of hi-rez, so no worries about filesystem for me). Sound out to the Ety 4P's is very good, and using it as a digital source is simple and real nice. I listen to the above setup with the Neko and EC feeding my Senn 600's almost every other night, and it is quite fun.
  15. Well said, and seconded!
  16. My son used this music or a school project.....Zach Hemsey, Mind Heist. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cXLYxx1yBA
  17. ^^^ Smart man, that Antonio fella.... Try to get REAL root cause before jumping into anything drastic..... Best of luck!!
  18. Listened to a bit of this, very very cool stuff! Will certainly pick it up..... And Esme, indeed so cute!
  19. Just saw a news report, that thankfully many people got out early via evacuations. Also, the storm moved SO fast that flooding wasn't/isn't as bad as other storms. So fingers crossed, at least more people will be alive. Now just to get shelter and rebuild....
  20. A good point. The DAC's I used were good and had their own PS's obviously, but the source was a laptop computer (either a Samsung or Dell Lattitude)....could indeed be some extra noise there that you won't get with a desktop and especially a dedicated (like sotm) USB card.
  21. Have them on order, due Monday....if TYLL says FOTM, then FOTM Seriously, looking for something that sounds good with better than nothing for isolation for work, these may fit the bill perfectly.
  22. Smooth move, Vincent, way to endear yourself..... That said, even with marketing like that, I was surprised to hear some differences with different USB cables. I always thought a good basic shielded cable would be fine. The recent trend, though, of splitting out or removing the power wires from the signal wires seems to make a positive difference. I have two non-power-wire cables that sound a little less smeared than something like the simple shielded cables, or a borrowed Pangea cable....

^^^ I thought it turned Beats into Stax.....my mistake......
  24. Great observation on humanity, Steve.....and, good luck and congrats on your last day!
  25. Sorry I'll be missing this one Tom; made the NY meet in the Spring, it was a fantastic time, great to meet you and a lot of others!
